Chapter 10: The Ledger That Could Destroy My Father
I called Vanessa seventeen times before I stopped.
Every call went unanswered.
The photograph she had sent me remained open on my phone, showing my father's handwriting beside a series of financial entries. The final lines were impossible to ignore.
*Original will secured. Recording recovered. Vanessa paid.*
*Final transfer to be completed after Claire signs.*
Someone had taken the original will. Someone had recovered my grandmother's recording. And someone had been paying my sister to keep quiet.
But the last line frightened me most.
My father had been waiting for my signature.
Not Daniel's.
Not Vanessa's.
Mine.
I forwarded the photograph to Rebecca Shaw and Margaret Lewis, then called Vanessa again.
This time, she answered.
"Claire?""
Her voice was barely audible.
"Where are you?""
"Don't ask me that.""
"Vanessa, you sent me a photograph of Dad's ledger. You said you found something about the second will. I need to know where you are.""
"I can't tell you.""
"Why?""
"Because if Dad finds out I've taken the ledger, he'll come after me.""
I gripped the phone.
"Come after you how?""
"He'll ruin me. He'll tell everyone I helped him. He'll make sure I take the blame for everything.""
"Did you help him?""
Silence.
"Vanessa.""
"Yes," she whispered.
"I helped him move documents. I took money. I lied to Daniel. I did things I'm not proud of.""
"Then tell the truth.""
"I'm trying.""
"Where are you?""
She began crying.
"I'm at the old office. I found the ledger in Dad's locked filing cabinet. There are other documents here, too.""
"Leave the building.""
"I can't. He'll know someone took them.""
"Let him know.""
"You don't understand. There's something else in here, Claire. Something that proves he planned the entire thing.""
I sat down at my kitchen table.
"What does it prove?""
"I can't explain over the phone.""
"Then send me a photograph.""
"I already sent you one.""
"Send me the rest.""
She hesitated.
Then she whispered, "I found the original will.""
My heart stopped.
"Where?""
"In a sealed envelope inside the ledger case. Dad kept it with the financial records.""
"Is it signed?""
"Yes. Grandma's signature, two witnesses, everything.""
I closed my eyes.
"Vanessa, don't touch anything else. Photograph the documents where you found them, and call Margaret. She can tell you how to preserve the evidence.""
"What if Dad comes back?""
"Then leave. The documents aren't worth your safety.""
She gave a small, broken laugh.
"You're still trying to protect me.""
"I'm trying to stop this family from destroying itself any further.""
"Even after what I did?""
I looked toward the staircase, remembering the messages, the money transfers, and the way she had sat on Daniel's lap while our mother laughed.
"I haven't forgiven you," I said.
"But I don't want you hurt.""
The line went quiet.
Then Vanessa said, "Claire, there's a name in the ledger you need to see. It's beside a payment made two days after Grandma died.""
"Whose name?""
Before she could answer, I heard a door slam on her end.
Vanessa gasped.
Then a man's voice cut through the phone.
"What are you doing in here?""
My father.
"Vanessa?"" I shouted.
The call ended.
I immediately dialed emergency services, explaining that I was concerned about a possible confrontation at my father's business office. I gave the address and told the operator that Vanessa had said she had discovered documents relating to a financial dispute.
Then I called Rebecca.
"Vanessa may be in danger," I said.
"She's at Dad's office, and he just found her there.""
"Have you contacted the police?""
"Yes.""
"Good. Don't go there alone. I'll meet you nearby, and we can coordinate with the officers.""
I grabbed my coat and drove toward the office.
My father had operated Bennett Construction Group from a converted warehouse for nearly twenty years. The building stood behind a row of auto repair shops, with a faded sign above the entrance and several company trucks parked along the fence.
When I arrived, two police vehicles were already outside.
Rebecca pulled in behind me.
We approached the entrance together, but an officer stopped us before we reached the door.
"Are you Claire Bennett?""
"Yes.""
"I'm Officer Daniels. We received a call concerning a disturbance. Your sister is inside with your father. Everyone is safe at the moment.""
My knees nearly gave way.
"Can I speak to her?""
"Not until we've finished speaking with them.""
I looked through the glass.
My father stood near the reception desk, holding a leather briefcase. Vanessa sat in a chair against the wall, her arms folded tightly across her chest.
When she saw me, she shook her head.
Not a warning to leave.
A warning that something had gone wrong.
A few minutes later, the officer escorted Vanessa outside.
She was pale, but uninjured.
She immediately reached for my arm.
"He took the ledger," she whispered.
"What?""
"Dad took it out of my bag. He told the officers I had stolen confidential company property.""
Rebecca stepped forward.
"Vanessa, did you photograph the documents before he took them?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Some of them. I sent copies to a new email account.""
"Good. Don't delete anything. We'll discuss how to preserve the originals and the copies.""
My father emerged from the building.
His face was red, and his briefcase hung from one hand.
He stopped when he saw me.
"You have no idea what you've done," he said.
I stared at him.
"You're right. I don't. Because you've spent four years making sure I never knew what you were doing.""
He pointed at Vanessa.
"She broke into my office and stole private business records.""
Vanessa flinched.
"You told me to find the ledger," she said.
My father froze.
I looked at her.
"What?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Three weeks ago, Dad told me to locate the original ledger because he needed to prepare a revised financial statement. He said the old records were inaccurate. I found the ledger, and that's when I saw the entries.""
My father recovered quickly.
"She's lying.""
"Then why did you take it from her?"" I asked.
"Because it's company property.""
Rebecca stepped between us.
"Mr. Bennett, any documents potentially connected to a disputed trust transfer should be preserved. You should direct any further communication through legal counsel.""
My father laughed bitterly.
"You're all treating me like a criminal.""
"No," I replied.
"We're treating your documents like evidence.""
His face darkened.
He stepped closer, lowering his voice.
"Claire, listen carefully. You have until Monday to resolve this privately. After that, the lender will proceed, and you will lose far more than your house.""
I felt a cold calm settle over me.
"Is that a threat?""
"It's a warning.""
"Then here's mine. I won't sign anything.""
His jaw tightened.
"You think your grandmother's little trust document makes you untouchable?""
"No. I think my grandmother knew you might try to take what wasn't yours.""
For the first time, I saw something close to fear in his eyes.
It vanished almost immediately.
He turned and walked toward his car.
Before getting in, he looked back at Vanessa.
"You've made your choice.""
Then he drove away.
Vanessa began trembling.
I took her hand.
"Tell me what was in the ledger.""
She wiped her face.
"Payments to the company. Transfers from the trust. And a separate account that Dad used after Grandma died.""
"What account?""
She shook her head.
"I only saw the last four digits. But the name on the account wasn't his.""
"Whose was it?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Daniel's.""
My stomach dropped.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"I know.""
"Are you certain?""
She nodded.
"There were deposits from the trust, followed by transfers to Dad's company. And beside several entries, Dad wrote the same phrase.""
"What phrase?""
Vanessa pulled out her phone and showed me the photograph she had taken before my father seized the ledger.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
*Bridge account. Daniel to authorize. Claire's consent pending.*
I read it twice.
Daniel's account had been used to move money from my grandmother's trust into my father's business.
The phrase Claire's consent pending appeared beside transactions that had already taken place.
I looked at Rebecca.
"Can someone use an account without the account holder's knowledge?""
"It's possible, depending on the circumstances. We need the actual bank records to determine who authorized the transactions.""
I turned back to Vanessa.
"Did Daniel know?""
She looked down.
"I don't know.""
But I remembered his confession.
He had admitted receiving money from my father and giving him financial documents. He had admitted signing the property filing without reading everything.
I had wanted to believe his mistakes came from fear and misplaced loyalty.
Now I wondered whether he had been involved in something much larger.
Rebecca touched my shoulder.
"We'll get answers. But we need to be careful not to draw conclusions before we have the evidence.""
I nodded.
Vanessa squeezed my hand.
"Claire, there's one more thing.""
I looked at her.
"When Dad found the ledger, he said something about the original recording. He said it had been destroyed years ago.""
"But I heard a copy.""
"Exactly. Which means someone has the original or made a copy before it disappeared.""
She lowered her voice.
"And if the recording is real, Dad isn't the only person who could be in trouble.""
I stared at her.
"Who else?""
Vanessa looked away.
"Daniel.""
Before I could ask another question, Rebecca's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds, then looked at me with a grave expression.
"The lender has agreed to provide the underlying transaction documents. There's a transfer in the records that occurred on the same day your grandmother died.""
"What kind of transfer?""
Rebecca swallowed.
"The money didn't go directly from the trust to your father's company. It passed through an account held in Daniel's name first.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"And the account records identify the person who initiated the transfer.""
Rebecca turned the phone toward me.
The authorization bore Daniel's signature.
But beneath it was a second signature.
My father's.
May you like
They had moved my grandmother's money together.
And now, whether Daniel had understood the full arrangement or not, the evidence suggested that he had been part of it from the beginning.
