Chapter 7: The Warning My Mother Left Behind

My father read the note a third time.

Darnell, if Renee ever asks to become Maya's guardian, do not trust the reason she gives you.

He held the paper beneath the kitchen lights, as if there might be another sentence hidden between the lines.

There wasn't.

Across the island, Renee stood perfectly still.

“Where did you get that?”” she asked.

Darnell looked up.

“You recognize the handwriting?””

“No.””

“Then why are you frightened?””

“I'm not frightened.””

“Your hands are shaking.””

Renee immediately clasped them behind her back.

I stood beside my father, clutching my stuffed rabbit against my chest. I had never seen an adult look at another adult the way Daddy was looking at Renee.

It wasn't ordinary anger anymore.

It was the expression of someone discovering that the person he had trusted with his most precious responsibility might have been lying to him for years.

“Tell me what you know about this photograph,” he said.

“Nothing.””

“Renee, I have a note from my dead wife warning me about you.””

Her face tightened.

“You're making assumptions based on something you don't understand.””

“Then help me understand it.””

She glanced at the photograph again.

“Danielle was paranoid near the end.””

My father went rigid.

“Don't call my wife paranoid.””

“Your late wife,” Renee corrected bitterly.

“You keep acting as if she's still the only woman who ever mattered in your life.””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Even Ava and Skye, watching from the staircase, seemed to stop breathing.

Darnell carefully placed the photograph on the island.

“Danielle was Maya's mother. She was also my wife. You knew that when you married me.””

“I knew there would be grief. I didn't know I'd spend the rest of my life competing with a memory.””

“You're not competing with a memory. You're competing with the needs of a child.””

Renee laughed without humor.

“And you wonder why I made decisions without you.””

Darnell picked up his phone.

“I'm calling the attorney again.””

“Don't.””

He looked at her.

“You've said that every time I've tried to find out the truth.””

“Because you don't know what you're about to uncover.””

“Then tell me.””

She pressed both palms against the kitchen island.

For a moment, she looked exhausted.

“I met Danielle once before she died.””

My father's expression changed.

“What?””

“Not socially. I knew who she was before you introduced us. We met at a charity event, years ago.””

I looked between them.

My mother had known Renee?

Daddy had never told me that.

“Why didn't you mention this before?”” he asked.

“Because it didn't matter.””

“Apparently, it mattered enough for her to leave me a warning about you.””

Renee's jaw tightened.

“She asked me to do something for her.””

“What?””

Renee looked toward the staircase.

Ava and Skye were listening.

“Not in front of the children.””

Darnell shook his head.

“No more private conversations. Not after you've tried to send my daughter away.””

Renee closed her eyes.

“Danielle asked me to protect Maya if anything happened to her.””

My father's expression shifted, but his voice remained firm.

“Protect her from what?””

“I don't know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“She said there were people who would try to interfere with Maya's future. She said the trust had conditions, and that Maya's inheritance could become a source of conflict.””

Darnell looked at the photograph.

“Who were these people?””

“She wouldn't tell me everything.””

“Yet you married me.””

“Yes.””

“And spent three years in this house without mentioning any of it.””

“I thought the danger had passed.””

“What danger?””

Renee looked away.

“I don't know.””

My father pushed his chair back.

“I'm done accepting answers that explain nothing.””

He called the attorney and asked whether someone could meet with us that evening.

The attorney agreed to arrange an urgent consultation with the firm's senior partner, who had handled Danielle's estate.

Within minutes, Darnell was making a list of the documents we needed to bring.

Then Renee spoke again.

“There is something else.””

He didn't look at her.

“I'm listening.””

“When Danielle died, I received a phone call.””

His fingers stopped moving.

“From whom?””

“A woman from the law firm. She said Danielle had left instructions concerning Maya. She asked whether I would be willing to help if the family ever needed a temporary guardian.””

“And you agreed?””

“I said I'd consider it.””

“Why?””

“Because I promised Danielle I would protect her daughter.””

My father finally turned.

“Protect her by sending her away?””

Renee's eyes filled with tears.

“I believed the school was the safest option.””

“Who told you that?””

She hesitated.

Then she whispered, “The trustee.””

Darnell stared at her.

“The independent trustee?””

“Yes.””

“What is the person's name?””

“Eleanor Price.””

My father wrote it down.

“Did Eleanor tell you to enroll Maya in boarding school?””

“She told me the trust had restrictions. She said that if Maya's home situation became unstable, a residential placement might be necessary.””

“Did she tell you to apply for guardianship?””

“No.””

“Did she tell you to use my signature?””

Renee shook her head.

“I never intended to hurt Maya.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Her tears spilled over.

“No.””

Darnell looked at the papers scattered across the island.

“Then why did you put my name on that form?””

Renee didn't answer.

I moved closer to my father.

“Daddy, can we leave now?””

He immediately took my hand.

“Yes, baby.””

He gathered the photograph, the note, and the enrollment packet into a folder.

Renee stepped around the island.

“Darnell, please. Don't leave tonight.””

He looked at her.

“You've had months to tell me the truth.””

“I was trying to keep our family together.””

“You tried to remove a member of our family without telling me.””

He led me toward the staircase.

Behind us, Skye began arguing with Renee.

“You told us Maya wanted to go!””

Renee's head snapped around.

“Skye, stop.””

“You said she was excited about the school!””

Ava started crying harder.

“I told her it wasn't true,” she whispered.

“I told Mom Maya didn't want to leave.””

Darnell stopped on the first stair.

He turned slowly.

“What did you just say?””

Ava wiped her cheeks with her sleeve.

“Mom told us not to tell you about the school. She said Maya would be happier somewhere else, and that if you found out too early, you'd stop everything.””

My father looked at Renee.

“Is that true?””

She stood frozen beside the island.

Neither daughter spoke again.

Darnell took me upstairs, packed my remaining clothes, and returned to the kitchen with my suitcase.

He didn't shout.

He didn't threaten anyone.

He simply picked up his keys.

“I'm taking Maya somewhere safe tonight,” he said.

“Tomorrow, we'll speak to the attorney and the trustee.””

Renee followed us to the front hall.

“Darnell, if you walk out that door, you may never understand why I did this.””

He opened the door.

“Then you'd better hope the truth is worth what you've done.””

He guided me outside.

But before he closed the door, Renee called after us.

“Ask Eleanor Price who really chose that boarding school.””

My father stopped.

Renee stood in the bright doorway, tears running down her face.

May you like

“She didn't recommend it, Darnell,” she whispered.

“She insisted on it.””
