Chapter 8: The Father I Never Knew

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

But the words refused to make sense.

*Mia must never know that her real father is still alive.*

My hands went numb.

The paper slipped slightly between my fingers.

My real father.

Still alive.

The room around me disappeared.

I could hear people talking, but their voices sounded distant, like I was underwater.

My father.

The man who raised me.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who stayed awake beside my bed when I had the flu.

The man whose last name I carried.

Was he not my father?

I looked up slowly.

Everyone was staring at me.

My dad looked like he had just been hit.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Caught.

“Dad…”

My voice barely came out.

He closed his eyes.

“Mia.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, don’t say my name like that.””

He stepped forward.

“I can explain.””

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“Of course you can.””

My fingers tightened around the letter.

“Everyone always can.””

Tara looked between us.

“John…”

My father looked at her.

“Don’t.””

The fear in his voice made my stomach twist.

Because for the first time, Tara looked like she wasn’t the person hiding something.

She looked like she had just discovered a secret too.

I turned to the detective.

“Did you know?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“No.””

“Then who knew?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

“You knew.””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

“How long?””

He sat down slowly.

“Since before you were born.””

I felt something inside me crack.

Before I was born.

Not yesterday.

Not after my mother died.

Before I even existed in this world.

“You knew I wasn’t your biological daughter?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

But it destroyed everything.

I stepped back.

“Why?””

My father looked at me.

“Because your mother asked me to.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not enough.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice rose.

“You don’t understand what this feels like.””

He looked devastated.

“I do.””

“No.””

I pointed at the letter.

“You got to know the truth. You got to make the choice. You got to decide what parts of my life I deserved to have.””

My father looked down.

“And I was wrong.””

Those words stopped me.

Because he didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t make excuses.

He just admitted it.

But it didn’t make the pain disappear.

“Who is he?””

My father looked at the floor.

“Mia…”

“Who is my real father?””

The detective quietly stepped back, giving us space.

Tara looked like she wanted to speak.

But she stayed silent.

Finally, my father whispered,

“His name was Daniel.””

Was.

The word caught my attention.

“Was?””

He hesitated.

Then corrected himself.

“Is.””

My heart raced.

“He’s alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer made me angry.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know he exists?””

My father took a shaky breath.

“Because your mother told me.””

“Tell me everything.””

He looked at me.

And for the first time all day, he stopped trying to protect me.

“When I met your mother, she was already pregnant.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She didn’t tell me at first.””

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He looked at the letter.

“Of Daniel.””

I stared.

“What happened?””

My father rubbed his face.

“Your mother and Daniel were together when they were young. He was involved with Richard’s company.””

“Richard again.””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel?””

“He discovered what Richard was doing.””

“The stolen money?””

“Yes.””

My mind raced.

“So my mother was involved because of him?””

“She was trying to help him.””

“Help him do what?””

“Escape.””

I frowned.

“Escape from Richard?””

My father nodded.

“Daniel knew too much.””

The detective stepped closer.

“Do you know why Daniel disappeared?””

My father looked at him.

“Your mother told me he had to leave.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard threatened him.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at the letter.

My mother had hidden this entire part of my life.

Not because she didn’t love me.

Maybe because she was trying to keep me alive.

“Then why did she marry you?””

My father looked at me.

“Because I loved her.””

That answer was simple.

Painfully simple.

“She never asked you to pretend?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

His voice broke.

“Because you were a baby. Because Daniel was gone. Because your mother believed he would come back one day.””

My eyes burned.

“And when he didn’t?””

My father looked away.

“She asked me to raise you.””

The room went silent.

“She asked you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because she knew I loved you.””

I looked away.

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to blame him.

But the truth was more complicated.

The man standing in front of me had lied.

But he had also been there.

Every birthday.

Every school event.

Every nightmare.

Every moment I needed someone.

The truth hurt because it wasn’t simple.

A knock interrupted us.

Everyone turned.

A uniformed officer stood at the door.

“Detective?””

The detective stepped outside briefly.

A minute later, he returned.

His expression had changed.

“What happened?”” Tara asked.

He looked at me.

“We found a lead.””

My heart started beating faster.

“About Daniel?””

He nodded.

“How?””

He held a document.

“Another file from the box.””

“What does it say?””

He looked down.

“It appears your mother was not only investigating Richard.””

“What else?””

“She was searching for Daniel.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“Why?””

The detective hesitated.

“Because she believed he was in danger.””

I looked at my father.

“And she found him?””

“No.””

“Then where is he?””

The detective placed the document on the table.

“There’s an address.””

Everyone leaned closer.

A handwritten address.

A place.

A location.

A possible answer to a question I had never known to ask.

Then I saw the date.

It was written two months before my mother died.

My father noticed it too.

His face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?”” I asked.

He looked terrified.

“Because that address…”

He stopped.

“Because what?””

He looked at me.

“That’s where your mother told me she was going the night she died.””

The room went cold.

I stared at the paper.

The address that connected my mother.

Daniel.

Richard.

And the night everything changed.

The detective carefully picked it up.

“We need to investigate this.””

But I wasn’t listening anymore.

Because something else had caught my eye.

At the bottom of the page, beneath the address, my mother had written one final note.

A note nobody had noticed.

A note written in darker ink.

*Mia, if Daniel is gone, find the man who raised you. He knows why.*

I looked at my father.

He looked back at me.

And suddenly I understood.

My mother hadn’t hidden the truth because she didn’t trust him.

She had hidden it because she trusted him with the most important thing she had.

Me.

But then why had she warned me to find out the truth?

And what did my father know that he still hadn’t told me?

I folded the paper slowly.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“What happened the night my mother died?””

His face went pale.

Because this time…

May you like

he couldn’t hide behind protecting me.

He had to answer.
