Chapter 8: The Truth My Father Buried

I read my father’s message again.

Emily, don’t believe everything your mother left behind.

The words should have made me angry.

Instead, they made me afraid.

Because for the first time, I wondered if the truth I had spent my entire life searching for was not hidden in one place.

Maybe it was buried under layers of lies.

Maybe everyone had a different version.

And maybe everyone believed they were the hero of the story.

I sat in my office staring at the two things sitting on my desk.

My mother’s video.

And my father’s warning.

Two pieces of evidence.

Two people I loved.

Two completely different truths.

My phone rang again.

This time, it was Eleanor.

I answered immediately.

“Emily?””

“Eleanor, did you know my mother made a video?””

There was a pause.

“Yes.””

I froze.

“You knew?””

“I knew there was a recording.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your mother specifically told me not to.””

I stood up.

“She told you not to tell me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Eleanor’s voice softened.

“Because she believed you would trust me.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

“How?””

“Your mother knew that if you discovered the truth from someone else, you would question it.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“She wanted me to see it myself.””

“Yes.””

I walked toward the window.

“Eleanor, my uncle called me.””

Silence.

Then:

“Thomas?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

“He said my mother lied.””

Eleanor exhaled slowly.

“Of course he did.””

“You knew he was involved?””

“I knew he was connected.””

“Connected how?””

Another pause.

“Emily, there are things your mother never proved.””

I gripped my phone.

“Then tell me what you know.””

Eleanor hesitated.

Finally, she said:

“Your mother believed Thomas was helping Daniel destroy her.””

“Believed?””

“Yes.””

“So you’re saying she might have been wrong?””

“I’m saying your mother was human.””

That answer bothered me.

Because I wanted certainty.

I wanted someone to tell me who was guilty.

Who was innocent.

Who was lying.

But nobody would.

“Eleanor.””

“Yes?””

“Who was at the accident scene first?””

Her silence was immediate.

Too immediate.

“You know something.””

“I know what the police report says.””

“What does it say?””

“That your father arrived before emergency services.””

I closed my eyes.

“And?””

“And he was the one who called them.””

I thought about Thomas’s words.

Ask him why he was there before your mother called him.

My father had said my mother called him.

But how could he have arrived before the call?

Unless…

Unless he had already been there.

I ended the call.

Then I grabbed my keys.

My father was waiting when I arrived.

Like he knew I would come.

The house looked different now.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Every wall held a secret.

Every photograph felt staged.

I walked inside.

My father stood in the living room.

“Emily.””

I didn’t sit.

“Were you at the accident scene before Mom called you?””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

The fear.

“Yes.””

The answer shocked me.

“You were?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell me she called you?””

He looked away.

“Because she did.””

“After you were already there?””

He stayed silent.

I felt something inside me crack.

“Why?””

My father sat down.

“Because I didn’t want you to know I had followed her.””

“Followed her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked exhausted.

“Because I thought she was meeting Daniel.””

The room went quiet.

“You thought she was cheating?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

“Because I knew Daniel had returned.””

I stared at him.

“And you didn’t tell her?””

“I did.””

“What happened?””

He looked toward the window.

“She told me she had a plan.””

“What plan?””

“She wanted to confront him.””

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

“Why would she do that?””

“Because she wanted proof.””

I remembered the video.

The evidence.

The investigator.

My mother had been building a case.

“So you followed her.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

His voice lowered.

“I saw another car.””

“Whose?””

He hesitated.

“Thomas’s.””

My heart stopped.

“Your brother was there?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell me nothing?””

“Because when I arrived…”

He stopped.

“Dad.””

His eyes filled.

“When I arrived, your mother was already hurt.””

The room became silent.

“What about Thomas?””

“He was gone.””

“Daniel?””

“Gone.””

“Then what happened?””

My father looked at me.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“I moved evidence.””

I froze.

“What evidence?””

“The flash drive.””

I stared.

“You took it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He looked at me.

“Of losing you.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“It does.””

“No, it doesn’t!””

My voice echoed through the house.

“You found evidence that could prove who hurt Mom, and you hid it?””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You keep saying that!””

I stepped closer.

“You weren’t protecting me. You were protecting yourself.””

His face fell.

Because maybe he knew I was right.

“Where is the original?””

“What?””

“The evidence you moved.””

He looked away.

“Dad.””

“I don’t know.””

That answer felt impossible.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then who does?””

Before he could answer, a voice came from behind me.

“I do.””

I turned.

Victoria stood in the doorway.

My anger immediately returned.

“You.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

My father looked shocked.

“Victoria?””

She ignored him.

“I took it.””

The confession landed quietly.

But it destroyed everything.

“You took my mother’s evidence?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled.

Not with fear.

With regret.

“Because I was the reason your mother trusted me.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria walked into the room.

“I knew Daniel was dangerous before anyone else.””

“Because you worked for him.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped my mother escape.””

“Yes.””

“Then why steal the evidence?””

She looked at my father.

“Because I found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

Her voice became barely a whisper.

“That Daniel wasn’t the only person who wanted your mother gone.””

The room froze.

I looked at my father.

He looked confused.

“You didn’t know?””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Victoria looked at me.

And the answer terrified me because it was the one person nobody had accused.

The one person who had been missing from every conversation.

The one person who had started everything.

“Your mother.””

I stared.

“What?””

Victoria shook her head.

“Not your mother as a person.””

She stepped closer.

“Your mother’s secret.””

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

“She discovered something about your family.””

“What?””

Victoria looked toward the staircase.

Then back at me.

“Something your grandfather did before you were born.””

My father went pale.

“Victoria.””

She continued.

“No more lies.””

I looked at my father.

“What did Grandpa do?””

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria said:

“Your grandfather didn’t build the family fortune.””

My stomach tightened.

“He stole it.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Victoria looked at me.

“And Daniel wasn’t trying to destroy your mother.””

She took a breath.

“He was trying to expose the same thing she discovered.””

I looked at the documents.

The trust.

The secrets.

The hidden evidence.

Everything connected.

But one question remained.

“If Daniel was telling the truth…”

“Then why did Mom fear him?””

Victoria looked at me sadly.

“Because two things can be true at the same time.””

I waited.

“Daniel was dangerous.””

A pause.

“And he was also telling the truth.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A new message.

From Thomas.

I opened it.

There was a photograph attached.

An old newspaper clipping.

The headline made my blood run cold.

*CARTER FAMILY EMPIRE BUILT ON FRAUD, FORMER EMPLOYEE CLAIMS.*

Below the headline was a picture.

My grandfather.

And beside him…

My mother.

But the date was impossible.

Because the photograph was taken before my mother had even met my father.

Then Thomas sent one final message.

Your mother knew the truth. Ask yourself why she protected the people who ruined her life.

I looked up.

Because suddenly I realized something terrifying.

The person who had the most secrets…

Was not my father.

Not Victoria.

May you like

Not Daniel.

It was my mother.
