Chapter 2 - ADRIAN MERCER SAID IT WAS ONLY “PLANNING”

Adrian did not run.

He came with attorney.

That almost made him look reasonable.

Almost.

Detective Torres played him audio.

His voice was unmistakable.

“And the trust?”

Then Vanessa:

“Once the baby is gone, I inherit it through Daniel.”

Adrian’s lawyer immediately said:

“My client did not understand ‘gone’ to mean dead.”

That word mattered.

Gone.

Residential placement?

Custody?

Removal?

Or death?

Vanessa’s statement was more dangerous because she had been holding a hot iron near an infant.

But no one had been burned.

No explicit plan to kill existed in audio.

So investigators separated.

Good.

No dramatic assumptions.

Adrian said:

“I believed Vanessa was talking about Clara being gone.”

I laughed.

“Then why did you ask about Mia’s trust?”

He looked at me.

“Because the trust has been under review.”

“By whom?”

“Family counsel.”

“No.”

I had not approved review.

Then Adrian explained.

Mia’s mother, Samantha Mercer Carter, had created a trust during pregnancy.

There.

Let's make bio mother Samantha died shortly after childbirth due a postpartum aneurysm when Mia was one month. Daniel remarried Vanessa perhaps quickly? Hmm. We can state Vanessa and Daniel married only three months ago after a long friendship and whirlwind courtship following Samantha's death? That might make him look strange, but melodrama. Better Vanessa was Daniel's fiancée and became wife shortly before Mia's birth? Yet stepmother because Samantha was surrogate? No.

Let's not dwell exact remarriage timeline. We can say Vanessa became my wife after a rushed courthouse marriage during a vulnerable period. People had warned me. Fine.

Samantha came from Mercer family.

Her father, William Mercer, established trust for Mia.

Value:

$18.6 million.

Not accessible to me personally.

I could request health, education, support.

Independent trustee approved.

If Mia died before twenty-five, remainder went to Mercer Family Foundation.

Adrian hated that.

Why?

Because foundation was controlled by independent directors after Samantha cut family out.

Adrian believed family money should return to blood relatives.

But contingent beneficiary realignment would instead route through my estate, then Vanessa.

Why would Adrian help Vanessa get money instead of Mercer family?

Because they had side agreement.

If trust were moved into Daniel Carter Family Estate structure, Adrian’s firm would become investment manager.

Annual fee:

1.5%.

On nearly nineteen million dollars.

Around $285,000 annually.

Plus transaction fees.

There.

Money.

Vanessa would get future inheritance position.

Adrian got fees.

Then Detective Torres asked:

“Did Daniel sign?”

Adrian hesitated.

“I was told he had.”

“By whom?”

Vanessa.

Then he received scanned signature.

Did he verify?

No.

He claimed Vanessa said I was traveling.

Again.

Convenience.

Then I asked:

“Why didn’t you contact me?”

Adrian answered:

“She said you wanted it discreet.”

I stared.

“You have my number.”

“Yes.”

“And my lawyer’s.”

“Yes.”

“Then you chose not to verify.”

He looked away.

There.

Then the iron.

Did Adrian know?

“No.”

Had Vanessa told him she planned to frame Clara?

He paused.

“Yes.”

The room changed.

What did she say?

That Clara had become “a problem” because she saw trust drafts.

Vanessa planned to make it look like Clara was unstable, rough with Mia, maybe stealing.

Adrian said he told Vanessa:

“Fire her legally.”

Vanessa answered:

“If Daniel thinks Clara harmed Mia, he’ll never ask questions.”

Adrian did not report.

Why?

He thought it was household drama.

Cowardice.

Then Detective Torres played another recovered call.

Vanessa:

“I need something Daniel will believe.”

Adrian:

“Do not hurt the child.”

Vanessa:

“Obviously.”

So he explicitly told not hurt.

That mattered.

But he still knew framing plot.

Then the nursery incident.

What was Vanessa intending with iron?

She later claimed:

To frighten Mia into crying harder so when Clara entered, she could provoke confrontation.

She knew Clara checked nursery whenever Mia cried.

She heated iron because she wanted it to look dangerous in Clara’s hands later?

Wait footage showed Vanessa holding it. How frame? She may intend to hand/drop iron, then accuse Clara. Better plan:

Vanessa wanted Clara to rush in, push her, then claim Clara attacked while holding baby. The iron was intimidation to make Mia cry and lure Clara.

That is twisted but coherent.

She never intended burn.

Still child endangerment.

Then Vanessa planned to call me:

“Clara attacked me and nearly hurt Mia.”

Fire Clara.

Eliminate witness.

No death plan yet.

Then why “once baby is gone, I inherit through Daniel”?

Maybe "gone" did mean once Clara gone? Grammar says baby is gone. User explicit. We must honor. Could interpret "baby gone" as Mia relocated to maternal family/residential guardianship? But six-month-old can't residential. Perhaps they planned transfer of custody to Mercer side? Hmm.

Better: Vanessa believed if Daniel lost custody or Mia moved to maternal guardianship, Vanessa and Daniel could influence trust? But she says inherit if baby gone suggests death. That's dark. We can make Adrian insist she was speaking hypothetically about beneficiary planning, but later evidence reveals she discussed "if something ever happens to Mia" and overreached. We can keep ambiguity then uncover she was not planning murder, but had built a financial scenario around death, which is alarming.

Let's say Vanessa had become obsessed with contingent inheritance after Adrian explained trust. Her statement meant if Mia were no longer alive at some future point, not necessarily plan. But holding iron near baby makes sinister. Investigators find no deliberate homicide plan. Still she endangered child and had financial motive. Good nuance.

Then Clara became central witness.

Police asked her background.

She had worked with Samantha.

Not as maid?

She had been Samantha’s personal assistant/housekeeper for four years.

After Samantha died, I kept her because Mia calmed with her.

That made Vanessa resent Clara more.

Clara knew old documents.

She recognized original trust wording.

There.

Vanessa saw her as Samantha’s shadow.

Same as Mia.

Then Clara said something I did not know.

“Mrs. Samantha told me before she died not to leave Mia alone with anyone who asked about the trust.”

I froze.

“What?”

Clara cried.

“She was scared.”

“Of Adrian?”

“Yes.”

Samantha had caught Adrian trying to pressure father William into changing trust governance during pregnancy.

She had cut him out.

Then after Samantha died, Adrian returned offering help.

I accepted some estate guidance because he was family.

Clara distrusted.

She tried warn once.

Again I said:

“Family will work it out.”

Another failure.

Then Clara handed Detective Torres an envelope.

Samantha had given it to her.

Sealed.

FOR DANIEL IF ADRIAN EVER ASKS ABOUT MIA’S CONTINGENT BENEFICIARY

My hands shook.

Samantha had anticipated exactly this.
