Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH CAME INSIDE

A year after photograph, Mom came to house for first time.

Not secretly.

Not across street.

Through front door.

I was ten.

Vanessa no longer lived there.

Dad asked Mom before.

She stood on porch.

Her hands shook.

Same pose as photograph.

One hand around wrist.

I noticed.

“Come in.”

She looked at me.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

That was difference.

Permission from child mattered emotionally, even though Dad owned/rented home.

Then she stepped.

She stopped near stairs.

Memories.

Our old family life.

Then my bedroom.

She saw beach photograph still on dresser.

Cried.

“You kept it.”

“Vanessa told me put away.”

“You didn’t.”

“No.”

Mom laughed.

“Good.”

Then closet.

Door no longer locked from outside.

Dad removed latch next morning after incident.

Mom touched frame.

I said:

“She put me there.”

Mom closed eyes.

“I know.”

“You’re angry?”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to yell?”

“No.”

Good.

Then she said:

“I wish I could have been here.”

“I know.”

That was enough.

Then Dad gave Mom stack original letters.

She had copies of many.

But seeing opened/hidden originals hurt.

One still had lipstick mark from my fourth birthday? Maybe no.

She read.

Then found card addressed to me:

Happy sixth birthday, my brave Lily. I hope you still sleep with one sock off because you say both feet get too hot.

I laughed.

I still did.

She remembered.

Then Dad asked:

“Can we give these to Lily?”

Mom said:

“When she wants.”

Not flood child.

I chose a few.

Rest later.

Then legal investigator discovered the photograph itself had been selected intentionally.

Gordon ordered Vanessa’s PI to photograph Emma near my bedroom window.

He wanted image that could be framed as stalking.

Then phrase She knows where Lily sleeps was Gordon's handwriting.

Not Vanessa.

Vanessa hid because Gordon sent as pressure.

“See? Emma is getting close. Act.”

But Vanessa could have shown Dad truth.

Instead hid and used fear.

Then MRC investigator testified Vanessa had instructed:

“No confrontation. Just document.”

So she did not plan physical harm to Emma.

Important.

But she paid surveillance.

Then Dad asked:

“Why keep photo in closet?”

Vanessa answered through statement:

“I couldn’t destroy it.”

Why?

Guilt.

“She looked like a mother waiting outside her own house.”

That image affected her.

Yet still three days later locked me in closet.

Humans contradictory.

Then I asked therapist:

“Can someone feel guilty and still do bad thing?”

“Yes.”

That was lesson.

Guilt does not automatically stop behavior.

Choice does.

Then Dad changed emergency systems.

My watch remained.

Location only when activated, not constant.

Privacy.

He said:

“I don’t want fear turning into tracking you all day.”

Good.

Then Mom got emergency contact too.

I could choose.

My watch now called Dad first, Mom second, Grandma third.

I felt safer.

But eventually stopped testing.

One night I pressed accidentally.

Mom answered.

“Lily?”

“Sorry.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Then good.”

She never complained.

Then I called Vanessa Mom once in dream.

I woke crying.

I felt like betraying Emma.

Mom heard later.

She said:

“You are allowed to have loved Vanessa.”

I stared.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“She hurt me.”

“Yes.”

“Then how?”

“Feelings don’t sign legal verdicts.”

Maybe too adult, but good.

Then:

“You lived with her for years. She cared for you sometimes. You don’t have to erase that to love me.”

That freed.

No competition.

Exactly opposite Vanessa.

Then I realized why Mom felt safer.

She did not need to win title.

She already knew who she was.
