Chapter 8: The Friend Who Had My Signature
For fifteen years, Daniel Harper had been the person I trusted with everything.
My business.
My legal documents.
My family’s future.
When my wife died, he was the first person who showed up at my house.
He brought food.
He helped organize paperwork.
He sat with me on the living room floor while I cried.
I had always thought of him as my brother.
Not by blood.
But by choice.
And now Rachel was telling me that he had approved access to my personal files.
The same files Vanessa used.
The same files connected to a fake guardianship document.
I stood in my office, staring at the wall.
“No.””
Rachel stayed silent.
I looked at her.
“No. Daniel wouldn’t do this.””
She didn’t argue.
She simply said:
“Then we need to find out why his name appears.””
That answer bothered me.
Because it meant she wasn’t accusing him.
She was investigating.
And somewhere deep inside, I was afraid the truth would hurt more than the suspicion.
I called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“Hey, I was just about to call you.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
A pause.
“About what?””
“Daniel.””
My voice must have sounded different because he stopped joking.
“What happened?””
“I need to ask you something.””
“Okay.””
“Did you approve access to my personal documents?””
Silence.
Not a confused silence.
Not a shocked silence.
A careful silence.
Finally, he said:
“Who told you that?””
I closed my eyes.
The same question.
Again.
Everyone who had nothing to hide asked:
“What are you talking about?””
Everyone who did know asked:
“Who told you?””
“Answer me.””
“Why are you asking?””
“Because I found out.””
Another pause.
Then Daniel sighed.
“Can we meet?””
“No.””
“Please.””
“Can you answer one question?””
“What?””
“Did you give Vanessa access to my files?””
The silence returned.
Longer this time.
Then:
“Yes.””
My entire body went still.
I had prepared myself for denial.
For excuses.
For anger.
I had not prepared for the truth.
“Why?””
“Not over the phone.””
“Why?””
“Because you need to hear everything.””
I looked at Rachel.
She was watching me.
“Where?””
Daniel gave me an address.
An old office building downtown.
A place he rarely used anymore.
“Come alone,” he said.
I almost laughed.
“Why?””
“Because if Rachel is already involved, things are further along than I thought.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What does that mean?””
But Daniel had already hung up.
Rachel didn’t like the idea.
“You shouldn’t go alone.””
“I need answers.””
“You can get answers safely.””
I looked at her.
“If Daniel wanted to hurt me, he would have had years to do it.””
“That doesn’t mean he isn’t dangerous.””
I hated that she was right.
But I also knew Daniel.
Or at least I thought I did.
“I’ll call you when I arrive.””
Rachel nodded.
“Keep your phone recording.””
I looked at her.
“You think he’ll confess?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
She gathered her things.
“I think people reveal more when they believe they’re finally being heard.””
The office was empty when I arrived.
Dust covered the reception desk.
The lights flickered.
It looked nothing like the modern law office where Daniel usually worked.
He was sitting alone in a small conference room.
A folder was on the table.
When he saw me, he looked older.
Tired.
Not like a criminal.
Like someone who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.
“You came.””
I sat across from him.
“Start talking.””
He looked at the folder.
“You remember when Emily died?””
The question made me uncomfortable.
“Of course I remember.””
“I remember too.””
His voice softened.
“I remember you couldn’t sleep. You couldn’t eat. You kept saying you failed her.””
I looked away.
“Don’t do this.””
“I’m not trying to hurt you.””
“Then explain why you helped someone fake my signature.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
And when he opened them again, there was regret.
“Because I thought I was protecting your children.””
I stared at him.
“Everyone says that.””
“I know.””
“Everyone hurts my daughter and then says they were helping.””
His face tightened.
“I didn’t know what Vanessa was doing to Lily.””
“No?””
“No.””
“Then what did you know?””
Daniel looked down.
“I knew Vanessa was trying to gain control.””
“Control of what?””
“Your estate.””
The word felt disgusting.
My children.
My family.
Reduced to an estate.
“She approached me after Emily died.””
I froze.
“After Emily died?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“She said she was worried about you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course she did.””
“She said you were unstable.””
My jaw tightened.
“Unstable?””
“She said grief had affected you. That you weren’t making rational decisions.””
I stared at him.
“And you believed her?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because she showed me evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“She showed me emails.””
My heart stopped.
“What emails?””
“Emails between you and Emily.””
I felt cold.
“What did they say?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“She only showed me pieces.””
Pieces.
The same way manipulators always worked.
Small pieces.
Enough to create a story.
Not enough to reveal the truth.
Daniel continued.
“She told me Emily was worried about you.””
I whispered:
“She was worried about Vanessa.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know that now.””
“Now?””
He looked at me.
“After I found the real documents.””
I leaned forward.
“What real documents?””
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside were copies of emails.
Bank records.
Legal files.
And one document with Vanessa’s name.
“I started investigating after Emily’s sister contacted me.””
“Sarah?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because I was ashamed.””
I stared.
“You helped her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought I could control the situation.””
My anger rose.
“You thought you could play both sides?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I thought if I stayed close to Vanessa, I could stop her.””
“And instead?””
“Instead, I helped her.””
The honesty didn’t make it better.
But it made it real.
Daniel pointed to one document.
“This is the original guardianship plan.””
I looked.
It was different from the one Vanessa created.
“Whose signature is that?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Michael’s.””
I looked up.
“Michael signed it?””
“Not officially.””
“What does that mean?””
“He agreed verbally.””
I felt exhausted.
Every person I trusted had become another door hiding something behind it.
“What was Vanessa’s real plan?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
“She wanted you removed as guardian.””
The room went silent.
“Removed?””
“Yes.””
“On what grounds?””
Daniel looked at the paper.
“Neglect.””
My hands shook.
“Because I worked?””
“Because she built a story.””
“What story?””
“That you were absent. That you were emotionally unavailable. That the children were suffering.””
I thought of Lily sitting in the kitchen.
The irony was unbearable.
The person causing the suffering was building a case accusing me of causing it.
“What about the fake signature?””
Daniel looked guilty.
“That was my fault.””
I stared at him.
“Explain.””
“I allowed Vanessa access to your old documents.””
“Why?””
“She said she needed proof that you had authorized her involvement with family matters.””
“And you believed her?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Because she threatened me.””
I went still.
“What?””
“She knew about my past.””
“What past?””
He looked at me.
Something in his expression changed.
Fear.
“She knew I had made mistakes before I became a lawyer.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
Daniel looked at the door.
Then whispered:
“The kind that could destroy my career.””
Before I could ask another question, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face turned pale.
“What?””
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
The phone rang again.
Then a message appeared.
Daniel read it.
And slowly placed the phone on the table.
“What did it say?””
He looked at me.
“She knows I’m talking to you.””
My stomach tightened.
“Vanessa?””
He nodded.
Then he turned the phone toward me.
The message was short.
*“You were warned. If he learns the whole truth, you lose everything.””*
I looked at Daniel.
“What whole truth?””
He didn’t speak.
“Daniel.””
His eyes filled with regret.
Then he said:
“There’s one thing Emily discovered that none of us knew.””
“What?””
Daniel reached into the folder and pulled out a final document.
A birth certificate.
My heart stopped.
Because the name on it wasn’t Lily.
It wasn’t Noah.
It wasn’t mine.
It belonged to someone else.
Someone connected to Vanessa.
May you like
And at the bottom was a note written in Emily’s handwriting:
*“This is why Vanessa wants control of the children.””*
