Chapter 5 - MADISON TOLD THE COURT WHY SHE CHOSE ME

Months later, Madison testified.
I did not attend.
Dad told me age-appropriate version.
Years later I read transcript.
The attorney asked:
“Why Noah?”
Madison answered:
“Because he was eight.”
That line stayed.
“Meaning?”
“Adults would believe me before him.”
Then:
“I knew if I put physical evidence in his bag, his denial would sound like what children say when caught.”
No excuses.
“Did you believe Noah had behavioral problems?”
“No.”
“Did Daniel?”
“No.”
“Did you forge Daniel’s signature?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make trust administrator believe both parents agreed.”
“Did you intend to control trust assets?”
“Yes.”
There.
“How much?”
“I didn’t know exact amount.”
“Did it matter?”
“Yes.”
Honest.
Then her lawyer explored coercion.
Gerald blackmail.
Linda manipulation.
Family history.
But Madison still said:
“They influenced me. They did not put envelope in backpack.”
Good.
Accountability.
Then Linda testified.
She denied everything.
Audio disproved.
She called Madison unstable.
Her own daughter.
Pattern.
When cornered, discredit weaker family member.
First Noah.
Then Madison.
Dad noticed.
Madison did too.
That became her break from mother.
Then Gerald pleaded guilty to extortion and historical arson-related offenses where prosecutable, plus fraud.
Linda faced conspiracy/fraud charges tied current trust scheme and property laundering.
Madison received reduced sentence because cooperation but still consequences—custodial time, probation, restitution, no control over child/trust.
Dad divorced.
That came before sentencing.
Madison asked:
“Because of Noah?”
Dad said:
“Because I cannot trust you around him.”
Correct.
Then:
“And because you used our marriage as access to hurt him.”
Also.
She cried.
No reversal.
I asked:
“Will I see her?”
Dad:
“Only if you want later and professionals think safe.”
I said no.
At eight.
He respected.
Years later that might change.
Then trust review.
Caroline recommended independent trustee.
Dad agreed.
He refused direct control of Ethan’s money.
Surprising.
“Why?”
“Because it’s Noah’s, and I’m his father. Those should not become same job automatically.”
Good governance.
Trust paid school/health expenses under rules.
Principal preserved until adulthood.
No six-million-dollar kid fantasy.
Then some trust money used for legal expenses to defend itself, allowed.
Fine.
Then restitution from Cole properties increased trust? Not directly. Victim fund separate.
Sarah’s role acknowledged through memorial legal fund maybe.
Dad created no dramatic foundation yet.
He simply stored documents.
Then fire site reopened investigation memorial.
The janitor Peter Dawson’s family had never received truth.
Michael contacted.
Dad apologized though not his crime.
They received settlement from recovered Cole assets.
Important.
Ethan’s family too? He had no spouse maybe.
Then Dad asked Michael why he held photo twenty years.
Michael said:
“It was last photo before everything burned.”
Then gave Dad.
Dad framed not fire side, but crop? no. Keep.
I sometimes stared.
Three young men.
Dad.
Michael.
Ethan.
Before betrayal.
Before fire.
Dad told me:
“You can love somebody and still admit they did something wrong.”
Ethan.
Madison.
Maybe.
I asked:
“Do you still love Madison?”
He thought.
“Yes.”
“Then why divorce?”
“Because love isn’t permission to keep someone close when they’re unsafe.”
I remembered.
Important.
Then Dad started therapy too.
Not only me.
He wanted understand why he dismissed things.
He realized after Sarah died he wanted normal family badly.
Madison offered.
So whenever evidence challenged normal, he minimized.
Noah says something odd? Misheard.
Madison too controlling? Trying hard.
Linda intrusive? Family.
He protected story.
Not malicious.
But dangerous.
Then he apologized:
“I wanted us to be okay so much I stopped checking whether we were.”
Strong.
I hugged him.
At eight, maybe mostly because he looked sad.
Then my birthday pen returned after evidence copied.
Police gave.
I held.
Dad said:
“You can keep recording if scared.”
I asked:
“Do I have to?”
“No.”
Good.
I put it in desk.

Stopped carrying daily.
