Chapter 3 - RICHARD SLOAN HAD BEEN WAITING FOR THE WEDDING

Richard Sloan did not run.

He hired a lawyer.

Turned over devices after warrant.

His defense:

He was planning legitimate trust services.

That was partly true.

A blended family can need coordination.

A child grieving can need therapy.

A trust can pay appropriate expenses.

That gray area was his cover.

Then investigators found ownership.

Sloan Family Governance.

Richard owned 65%.

The other 35% through holding company belonged to Vanessa.

Hidden in trust.

Then Oak Ridge placement consultancy.

Richard received referral payments.

Undisclosed.

Then why wedding mattered?

Once Daniel married me, household authority changed.

I would become Lily’s stepmother.

Unlike Vanessa—Daniel’s stepmother—I lived with Lily and had daily caregiving role.

That threatened Vanessa’s influence.

More importantly, Emma’s trust amendment required disclosure of any new paid family liaison after remarriage.

Richard feared audit.

The wedding triggered review.

So he wanted old papers before Samantha formally activated updated governance.

He believed Emma’s original amendment might not be enforceable without certain originals? The trust had copies, but original helped resolve. He wanted know exactly what language said.

Not destroy necessarily.

Find.

Then Vanessa searched.

Why bridal suite?

Because I had envelope.

Then dress.

Vanessa wanted Lily away from family photos partly because jealousy.

She also wanted her visibly “acting out.”

The camera destroyed that.

Then Richard’s text:

Did she find the papers?

Not:

Did you hurt Lily.

Financial focus.

Then police recovered another message.

Vanessa:

She won’t stop talking about Emma.

Richard:

That supports grief-related adjustment concerns.

Vanessa:

You keep saying concerns. What if she’s just a normal kid who hates me?

Richard:

Courts do not rule on who likes whom. They rule on documentation.

There.

He knew.

Then:

V: Daniel always believes her eventually.

R: Then Daniel needs evidence before she speaks.

That line became central.

Preload narrative.

Then whenever Lily complained, Daniel already heard:

She is struggling.

She is resistant.

She is grieving.

She is attention-seeking.

So truth arrived after explanation.

Dangerous.

Then financial.

Richard had used $315k questionable fees.

Expected another $800k over several years if placement/family liaison structure approved.

Vanessa expected $120k annual liaison fee.

Motive.

Not “steal $10m overnight.”

Control and fees.

More realistic.

Then Vanessa’s separate motive:

She resented Lily because Robert—Daniel’s father—had adored granddaughter.

Before Robert died, he left Lily a separate $1.5m family gift? Could complicate. Maybe he left a modest education bequest independent of Emma trust.

Vanessa believed Robert favored Lily over her adult children? Let's say Robert left Lily a $500k education legacy. Vanessa was angry because she expected those funds to stay in marital estate.

That resentment predated.

She saw Lily as child who “took” from her.

Then after Robert death, Richard suggested she could still be compensated through advisory work.

She liked.

Then behavior plan.

May you like

Then wedding.

Everything converged.
