Chapter 7: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much

“Kayla Carter.””

Leonard's voice cut through the bright living room.

Kayla stared at the name displayed on his phone. Her shopping bag slipped from her fingers, spilling a lipstick, a compact mirror, and a set of car keys across the hardwood floor.

“That isn't possible,” she whispered.

Derek turned toward her.

“Tell me why Leonard Cole has a message saying you're starting to remember everything.””

Kayla looked at Monica.

Her mother shook her head once.

It was a tiny movement. Almost invisible.

But Nia saw it.

“Don't look at her,” Nia said.

“Look at Dad.””

Kayla's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't forge anything.””

“Then why does your name keep appearing on documents connected to my money?””

“I don't know!””

Nia stepped closer.

“You got a brand-new SUV with money nobody can explain. You drove away in a car that belonged to me. And now a man who knew my mother says you're remembering something?””

Kayla's face crumpled.

“I didn't know the car was yours!””

“You already said that. I'm asking about the money.””

Derek picked up the transfer authorization and held it in front of her.

“Your signature is here.””

Kayla stared at the paper.

“That isn't my signature.””

The room fell silent.

Leonard lowered his phone.

“Are you certain?””

“Yes!”” Kayla's voice cracked.

“Look at it. My K doesn't even look like that.””

Nia took the document from Derek.

Kayla was right.

The signature had been written in a smooth, confident hand. Kayla's handwriting, by contrast, was distinctive and slightly uneven. Nia had seen it countless times on notes left around the house.

Someone had copied her stepsister's signature, too.

Derek rubbed his jaw.

“So someone forged mine, forged Kayla's, and used those signatures to move money from a trust belonging to my daughter.””

Leonard nodded.

“That is what the documents suggest.””

Monica abruptly stood.

“Stop making this sound like a criminal investigation!””

Derek turned on her.

“What else would you call it?””

“People make mistakes!””

“People don't accidentally forge signatures and sell someone else's car!””

Monica pointed at Leonard.

“He knew the account was losing money. He could have stopped this years ago.””

“I froze the account when the withdrawals became irregular,” Leonard replied.

“But I couldn't reverse transactions already authorized under the administrator's credentials.””

“And you expect us to believe you did everything correctly?””

“No. I expect you to examine the records.””

Leonard opened his folder again and removed several printed pages.

“Every transfer is documented. Every authorization has a timestamp. The records also show that someone accessed the account using a device registered to this house.””

Derek looked around the living room.

“Whose device?””

Leonard pointed to a line on the page.

“The device was registered under Monica's name.””

Monica's face tightened.

“Anyone could have used my laptop.””

“That's true,” Leonard replied.

“Which is why I'm not accusing anyone based on that information alone.””

Nia folded her arms.

“Then what are you accusing people of?””

“I'm trying to establish who had access, who benefited, and who knew the money belonged to you.””

Kayla suddenly sat down on the sofa.

“I remember something.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Monica took a step forward.

“Kayla, don't.””

Kayla stared at her mother.

“You told me not to talk about it anymore.””

“Because you were a child.””

“I was fourteen!””

“And you misunderstood what you saw.””

Kayla shook her head.

“No. I remember the night you brought those papers home.””

Monica's mouth tightened.

Derek moved closer.

“What papers?””

Kayla wiped her cheeks with the backs of her hands.

“Old papers. They were in a blue folder. You put them on the kitchen counter, and you told me that if anyone asked, Dad had already agreed to everything.””

Derek looked stunned.

“I never agreed to anything.””

“I know that now!””

Kayla's voice rose.

“But back then, you both kept saying money was tight. Mom said Nia's mother had left behind a lot of bills and that someone had to clean up the mess.””

Nia felt a cold pressure settle in her chest.

“My mother left money. Leonard just showed us the statement.””

“I know!”” Kayla cried.

“That's what I found out later.””

Monica crossed the room and grabbed Kayla's arm.

“Stop talking.””

Kayla pulled away.

“No! You told me this was for the family. You said Nia didn't need to know because she was too young to understand.””

Nia stared at her stepsister.

“How did you find out about the trust?””

Kayla hesitated.

“Two years ago, I overheard Mom talking on the phone.””

“With whom?””

“I don't know. She said the money couldn't be replaced before your eighteenth birthday. She said if you found out, everything would fall apart.””

Derek looked at Monica.

“Everything?””

Monica shook her head.

“This is being twisted.””

Kayla stood, her hands trembling.

“And then last month, Mom told me I was getting a car. She said it was a reward because I'd been patient while she dealt with a difficult situation.””

Nia swallowed.

“Did she tell you where the money came from?””

“She said it was her savings.””

“Did you believe her?””

Kayla looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

Nia laughed bitterly.

“You never questioned why I was taking the bus while you were getting a luxury SUV?””

Kayla flinched.

“I thought your car was gone because of the theft.””

“And when you saw me crying about it?””

“I didn't know what to say.””

“You could have asked questions!””

“I was scared!””

The words burst out of Kayla so suddenly that everyone fell silent.

She pressed both hands against her face.

“I knew something wasn't right. I knew Mom kept getting calls. I knew she started locking her office. But every time I asked, she told me that if I wanted this family to stay together, I had to stop asking questions.””

Derek looked at his wife with open disbelief.

“You made your daughter afraid to tell the truth?””

Monica's eyes flashed.

“I was trying to protect her!””

“From what?””

“From losing everything!””

Leonard slowly closed his folder.

“Monica, the money was never yours to lose.””

She turned toward him.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed for this family.””

“No,” he replied.

“But I know what the documents say.””

He removed a final sheet from the folder.

“This is a copy of a withdrawal authorization submitted shortly before the account was frozen. The transaction was never completed because the signature verification failed.””

Nia looked at the page.

The amount was $62,000.

Below it was a handwritten note.

*Release after beneficiary reaches eighteen.*

Derek's brow furrowed.

“Why would someone wait until her eighteenth birthday?””

Leonard pointed to the final line.

“Because the person who created this authorization expected Nia to become legally entitled to challenge the trust administration at that age.””

Nia stared at Monica.

“You were waiting for my birthday?””

Monica didn't answer.

Leonard continued.

“Whoever planned this understood that once Nia turned eighteen, any unexplained withdrawals could trigger an independent review.””

Derek's expression darkened.

“And the SUV?””

“The purchase was made through a chain of transfers connected to the same financial records.””

Kayla shook her head.

“I don't want the car.””

She grabbed her keys from the floor and placed them on the coffee table.

“I don't want anything that came from Nia's money.””

Nia looked at the keys.

For the first time that afternoon, she believed her stepsister might actually be telling the truth.

Then Kayla turned toward her mother.

“There's something else.””

Monica went rigid.

Kayla's voice dropped.

“The night you brought home the blue folder, you made a phone call. You told someone that Nia's father still believed you were protecting his daughter.””

Derek stared at her.

“What else did she say?””

Kayla's eyes filled again.

“She said the only problem was that Leonard knew who Nia's real father was.””

The room seemed to lose its air.

Nia turned slowly toward Derek.

“Dad?””

He didn't move.

Monica covered her mouth.

Leonard's expression changed for the first time since entering the house.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Derek looked directly at him.

“Explain that sentence.””

Leonard lowered his eyes.

“I was hoping we wouldn't have to discuss that today.””

Nia's heart hammered.

“Discuss what?””

Leonard opened his folder and removed an old photograph.

A younger version of her mother stood in front of the same suburban house, smiling at the camera. Beside her was a Black man Nia had never seen before.

The man held a baby in his arms.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date and a name.

*NIA — SIX WEEKS OLD.*

Nia stared at the unfamiliar man.

“Who is he?””

Leonard looked at Derek.

“That's the question your mother wanted answered before anyone touched her daughter's inheritance.””

Derek's face hardened.

“Tell us his name.””

May you like

Leonard turned the photograph over.

And the name written there made Monica sink back onto the sofa.
