Chapter 6: The Family Betrayal
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
Vanessa stared at the screen like it was a ghost from another life.
Dad stared at her like he was seeing a stranger.
And I stood there trying to understand one thing.
Why was my uncle calling her?
My father slowly reached for the phone.
Vanessa pulled it away.
“No.””
The word came out too quickly.
Too desperately.
Dad noticed.
“Why not?””
“It’s late.””
“That’s your answer?””
She looked away.
“David, this isn’t the time.””
“No.””
His voice was calm.
But I knew that calm.
It was the kind that came before a storm.
“This is exactly the time.””
Vanessa’s fingers tightened around the phone.
The screen went dark.
The call ended.
For a moment, everyone was silent.
Then Dad spoke.
“Call him back.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because nothing good will come from this.””
Dad stared at her.
“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said tonight.””
Vanessa flinched.
I had never seen my father speak to her like that.
Not once.
She looked at him.
“You’re really doing this?””
Dad looked confused.
“Doing what?””
“Acting like I’m the enemy.””
He glanced at the notebook on the table.
The documents.
The evidence.
Then back at her.
“I don’t know what you are anymore.””
The words landed hard.
Even Vanessa seemed shocked.
For a few seconds, she looked less angry.
More hurt.
Then the mask returned.
“You want answers?””
She threw her purse onto the chair.
“Fine.””
Dad didn’t move.
“Yes.””
She laughed quietly.
“You really think you’re ready?””
Nobody answered.
She looked at me.
Then at Dad.
“You should ask your brother what he told me.””
My father froze.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“Ask him what he said about Ethan.””
My heart sank.
Because somehow, even after everything, she still had another weapon.
Dad picked up his phone.
He called.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then someone answered.
“David?””
My father’s face became cold.
“Michael.””
A pause.
“What’s going on?””
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“Why were you calling my wife?””
Silence.
The kind of silence that gives away everything.
Then my uncle said:
“David, I can explain.””
My father closed his eyes.
“No.””
His voice was low.
“You can explain after you tell me the truth.””
Another pause.
“Is Ethan there?””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Dad looked at me.
“Yes.””
My uncle sighed.
“Then maybe you should let him hear this.””
I stepped closer.
Dad put the phone on speaker.
Michael’s voice filled the kitchen.
“Ethan, I’m sorry.””
I stared at the phone.
“Sorry for what?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then my uncle said:
“For not telling your father sooner.””
Dad looked at me.
“Telling me what?””
Michael exhaled.
“About Vanessa.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Michael, don’t.””
Dad turned toward her.
“Don’t what?””
She said nothing.
Michael continued.
“I knew something was wrong before the wedding.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“How?””
“Because I saw her talking to someone.””
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Marcus.””
The room went silent.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“You knew Marcus before tonight?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Dad’s voice became quieter.
“You knew him.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“I knew of him.””
“Difference?””
“He was someone from my past.””
Marcus.
The man who was supposed to make me disappear.
Someone from her past.
My father rubbed his forehead.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because it didn’t matter.””
Michael’s voice interrupted.
“It mattered.””
Dad turned back to the phone.
“Michael, what do you know?””
My uncle was quiet.
Then he said:
“I know Vanessa came to me six months after the wedding.””
My heart stopped.
Six months.
Not a recent decision.
Not a moment of anger.
A plan.
“What did she want?”” Dad asked.
Michael hesitated.
“She wanted advice.””
“About Ethan?””
“Yes.””
Dad looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
“What kind of advice?””
Michael answered slowly.
“She asked how to separate you from him.””
The kitchen felt freezing.
Dad didn’t speak.
I couldn’t either.
Because hearing it from someone else made it impossible to deny.
Vanessa wasn’t just angry at me.
She wanted my father without me.
Dad’s voice shook.
“Why?””
Michael sighed.
“She said Ethan was destroying your marriage.””
“That’s not true.””
“I know.””
My uncle’s answer came immediately.
Dad looked surprised.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Silence.
Then Michael said:
“Because I thought you would figure it out.””
My father laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because he was hurt.
“I trusted everyone.””
Nobody spoke.
Michael continued.
“I should have said something.””
“Yes.””
Dad’s voice was sharper now.
“You should have.””
“I’m sorry.””
Dad looked at me.
Then at the notebook.
Then at Vanessa.
“What else?””
My uncle went quiet.
“What else, Michael?””
Finally, he answered.
“She asked me to sign something.””
My father frowned.
“Sign what?””
“Temporary guardianship paperwork.””
My entire body went cold.
The same paperwork we found.
The same date.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“You told me those papers were fake.””
She said nothing.
Michael continued.
“She said she needed my signature because you would never approve.””
Dad’s hands shook slightly.
“Approve what?””
Nobody answered.
Then my uncle said:
“Sending Ethan away.””
The words hung in the air.
My father looked at Vanessa.
And this time, there was no confusion.
Only pain.
“You were going to send my son away.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
But I didn’t know if they were real.
“I was trying to save us.””
Dad stared at her.
“There is no ‘us’ if you remove my child.””
She wiped her face.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I understand perfectly.””
For a moment, I thought she would finally admit everything.
But Vanessa had survived by never accepting blame.
She stepped closer.
“You want to know why I did it?””
Dad said nothing.
She looked at me.
“Because every time I looked at him, I saw what I could never have.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She laughed softly.
“Your father’s unconditional love.””
My chest tightened.
Dad looked at her.
“Vanessa…”
“No.””
She pointed at me.
“He never had to earn it.””
The room went silent.
“He lost his mother, and everyone protected him.””
I stared at her.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“He was a child.””
“Yes.””
Her voice cracked.
“And I was the woman everyone expected to fix everything.””
Dad looked disgusted.
“Being overwhelmed doesn’t excuse starving him.””
Her expression changed.
That word.
Starving.
The word she had avoided all night.
Because she knew it was the one thing she couldn’t explain away.
Then suddenly, the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the hallway.
Older.
Gray hair.
Holding a briefcase.
My heart dropped.
Because I recognized him.
Not personally.
But from pictures.
Dad’s father.
My grandfather.
Richard Carter.
Dad stared.
“Dad?””
Grandpa looked around the room.
At the papers.
The notebook.
Vanessa.
Then me.
And his face changed.
“I came as soon as I heard.””
Dad frowned.
“Heard what?””
Grandpa didn’t answer.
He looked directly at Vanessa.
Then said:
“The truth about why she married you.””
Nobody moved.
Vanessa’s face went completely white.
Dad whispered:
“What are you talking about?””
Grandpa opened his briefcase.
Pulled out a folder.
And placed it on the table.
“I found these three years ago.””
Dad looked at the folder.
“What are they?””
Grandpa looked at me.
Then at my father.
“Proof that Vanessa didn’t choose you because she loved you.””
May you like
He opened the folder.
“She chose you because of what she thought Ethan would inherit.””
