Chapter 14: The Truth Diane Couldn't Bury

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Dad shook his head.

"No.""

Rebecca looked at him.

"The address is the same one connected to the fraudulent account opened in Maya's name.""

I stared at the screen.

"Are you saying Diane is Margaret's daughter?""

Robert nodded slowly.

"That would explain why she knew about the estate.""

Ethan looked furious.

"She knew who she was the entire time?""

"Not necessarily," Rebecca said.

"We need proof.""

Dad paced the room.

"She married me. She raised Maya. She took money from my mother. And now you're telling me she might be connected to the original family?""

Robert looked at him.

"I don't know what she knew when she married you.""

I thought about Diane's behavior over the years.

Her obsession with controlling documents.

Her anger whenever Eleanor mentioned the past.

Her determination to keep Ethan away.

"She must have known something," I said.

Rebecca closed the laptop.

"We need to find Margaret before Diane does.""

The police had traced the call to the Bellweather Hotel.

A room had been booked under Margaret's name.

But when officers arrived, it was empty.

The bed was made.

The curtains were closed.

A glass of water sat on the nightstand.

And a note had been left on the desk.

It contained a single sentence.

*I WILL SPEAK TO MY FAMILY WHEN THE MONEY IS SAFE.*

Dad read it.

"She's afraid of Diane.""

Robert nodded.

"She always was.""

We returned to the police station.

Rebecca arranged for the officers to review the old records, while Ethan and I searched through Laura's belongings.

Ethan had kept several boxes from his mother's apartment.

Most contained photographs, letters, and ordinary family documents.

But at the bottom of one box was a small wooden jewelry case.

Inside was a gold pendant.

It was shaped like a tiny tree.

I recognized it from the photograph at the Bellweather.

Margaret had worn the same pendant.

Ethan turned it over.

There was a tiny engraving.

*M + L + E.*

"Margaret, Laura, Eleanor," I whispered.

Ethan opened the pendant.

Inside was a folded strip of paper.

The handwriting was Laura's.

If you ever find this, please understand that I didn't know the whole truth. Eleanor protected me when no one else would. She said my mother had been forced to disappear, and that one day I would understand why.

Ethan swallowed.

"She knew.""

I nodded.

"Maybe she didn't know everything.""

He read the final line.

If you meet my sister, don't let her tell you that she did it for love.

Ethan looked up.

"Her sister.""

We both knew who that meant.

Diane.

The woman who had taken my tax refund.

The woman who had stolen from Eleanor.

The woman who had convinced Dad that his first son was dead.

The woman who had threatened Laura.

And possibly the woman who had been trying to erase her own family history.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

This time, I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Maya?""

I froze.

"Who is this?""

"It's Margaret.""

I looked at Ethan.

He reached for my arm.

Margaret continued.

"I know you're with your brother.""

"How did you get this number?""

"Your grandmother gave it to me years ago.""

I swallowed.

"Where are you?""

"Somewhere safe.""

"Why did you disappear?""

There was a long silence.

Then she said, "Because Daniel Mitchell's father wanted me dead.""

"Why didn't you come back?""

"Because I believed everyone I loved would be killed if I did.""

I glanced at Ethan.

"Did you know Laura?""

Margaret's voice softened.

"She was my daughter.""

"She died last year.""

A quiet sob came through the phone.

"I know.""

"Then why didn't you contact her?""

"I tried.""

"She needed you.""

"I know.""

Her voice broke.

"I know, Maya.""

I felt anger rising.

"Then why should we believe you now?""

"Because I have something Diane has been searching for.""

"What?""

"The original ledger.""

Rebecca, who had been standing nearby, immediately moved closer.

"What ledger?"" she mouthed.

I put the call on speaker.

Margaret explained that the original Carter estate had been managed through a series of private companies. The ledger recorded every transaction, every transfer, and every person who had benefited from the money.

It also contained evidence that Daniel Mitchell's father had used the estate to finance illegal property acquisitions.

"Where is it?"" Rebecca asked.

Margaret went quiet.

"Who is that?""

"Rebecca Hayes. I'm representing the estate.""

Margaret seemed to recognize the name.

"Your family has been very good at hiding behind lawyers.""

Rebecca kept her voice steady.

"I'm trying to recover what was stolen.""

"Then listen carefully. The ledger is not in a bank.""

"Where is it?""

"Inside the building on West Broad Street.""

The old Blue Lantern restaurant.

I looked at Ethan.

Margaret continued.

"Eleanor hid it there. She told me that one day her grandchildren would find it.""

Rebecca wrote down the address.

"Can you meet us?""

"Not yet.""

"Why?""

"Because Diane has already found the building.""

My stomach tightened.

"How do you know?""

"Because she called me.""

Margaret's voice became colder.

"She said she wanted to make peace. She said she wanted to return the money.""

"And you believed her?""

"No.""

"Then what happened?""

"I told her I knew who she really was.""

There was a pause.

"She threatened me.""

Dad took the phone.

"Margaret, this is Marcus.""

Silence.

Then a shaky breath.

"Marcus?""

"Yes.""

"Oh, my God.""

Dad closed his eyes.

"I've spent my whole life thinking you were dead.""

"I'm sorry.""

"Why didn't you come back?""

"I was afraid.""

Dad's voice cracked.

"Everyone was afraid. I was the child.""

Margaret began crying.

"I know.""

He looked at Robert.

Then he said, "I want to meet you.""

"You will.""

"When?""

"Tonight. At the Blue Lantern.""

Rebecca immediately objected.

"That's too dangerous.""

Margaret replied, "If you want the ledger, you have to come before Diane destroys it.""

The call ended.

We contacted the police.

They agreed to secure the building before we arrived.

The Blue Lantern had been closed for years. Dust covered the windows, and the old sign hung crookedly above the entrance.

An officer unlocked the side door.

Inside, the restaurant smelled of damp wood and old smoke.

Ethan walked toward the back hallway.

"This is where Laura said she and Grandma used to meet.""

I followed him.

Behind the kitchen was a narrow storage room.

A wooden cabinet stood against the wall.

Ethan pulled it forward.

Behind it was a small metal safe.

Rebecca examined the lock.

"Do you know the combination?""

Ethan shook his head.

Then he noticed a carved mark on the cabinet.

Three letters.

M, L, E.

He entered the dates from the pendant.

The safe clicked.

Inside was a thick black ledger wrapped in plastic.

Rebecca carefully opened it.

Rows of transactions filled the pages.

Names.

Dates.

Account numbers.

And signatures.

She turned several pages.

Then she stopped.

"Look at this.""

A transfer dated thirty years earlier showed money moving from Margaret's estate into a company controlled by Daniel Mitchell's father.

The next entry showed a payment to a private medical facility.

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

*Payment for silence — Margaret Carter.*

Dad stared.

"She was paid to disappear?""

Rebecca shook her head.

"No. Someone was paid to make sure she stayed missing.""

Ethan turned another page.

There was a second payment.

This one was dated six years earlier.

The amount was $100,000.

The recipient was Ethan Carter.

Ethan stepped back.

"I never received that money.""

Rebecca examined the signature.

"It was deposited into an account under your name.""

Ethan's face hardened.

"Diane.""

The next entry showed a payment to a private investigator.

The name was unfamiliar.

But the final entry made my blood run cold.

It was dated six months ago.

The recipient was a medical transport company.

The description read:

*FINAL ARRANGEMENTS — MARGARET CARTER.*

Dad stared at the page.

"Why would someone pay for her final arrangements if she's alive?""

A voice came from the doorway.

"Because someone wanted her to be dead.""

We turned.

Diane stood in the entrance.

Her coat was wet from the rain.

Her eyes moved from Dad to Ethan, then settled on me.

"Give me the ledger, Maya.""

The police officer stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter, don't move.""

Diane smiled.

"You have no idea what you're holding.""

Rebecca closed the ledger.

"Actually, I think we do.""

Diane looked at her.

"Then you should understand that half of those transactions are perfectly legal.""

"Not the forged transfers.""

"Prove they were forged.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"You used my identity.""

Diane's smile disappeared.

"I gave you opportunities.""

"You threatened my mother.""

"I kept her from ruining your life.""

Ethan's voice shook.

"You offered me money to abandon my grandmother.""

"Because you were never supposed to inherit anything.""

Dad stared at her.

"Why?""

Diane looked at him.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely angry.

"Because your mother should never have been allowed to control the estate.""

Robert stepped forward.

"Margaret was your mother too.""

Diane went still.

Then she laughed.

A bitter, ugly sound.

"You still don't understand.""

She looked at me.

"Margaret didn't disappear to protect her children.""

May you like

Her eyes shifted toward Ethan.

"She disappeared because she chose one child over the other.""
