Chapter 8: The Threat Behind the Money

Nobody moved.

The clock above the hallway ticked once, twice, three times.

Renee stood beside the staircase with both hands pressed against her mouth. Jordan looked as if he wanted to disappear into the floor.

I read the note again.

Once the transfer clears, contact Thomas. The remaining balance will be handled separately.

Then the final line.

Do not let Darnell speak to Camille's lawyer.

I placed the paper on the table.

“Renee, what do you mean he would kill us?””

She shook her head, tears slipping down her cheeks.

“I shouldn't have said that.””

“It's too late for that.””

“He threatened me.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“What did he threaten you over?””

She looked at Jordan.

“Not here.””

I nearly laughed.

“You've spent two days screaming at people in this foyer, and now you want privacy?””

“Darnell, please.””

“No. You wanted me to believe Maya had done something wrong. You wanted me to accept an empty bank account without asking questions.

And now you're telling me your father threatened your family. You're going to explain what you know.””

Renee lowered herself onto the chair beside the table.

Her hands shook so badly that she had to grip the seat.

“Thomas contacted me shortly after you and I started dating,” she said.

“He told me he knew Camille had established a trust for Maya. He said he'd been involved in the original arrangements and that Camille had kept something that belonged to him.””

“What?””

“He wouldn't say.””

“Did you believe him?””

“At first, no. I thought he was trying to get money out of me.””

She stared at the floor.

“Then he showed me copies of documents with Camille's signature. He told me there had been an agreement between them before she died.””

“What kind of agreement?””

“I don't know. He said that if I married you, I would eventually have access to information that could help him recover what he was owed.””

The words made my skin crawl.

“You married me because he told you to?””

“No!”” She looked up sharply.

“I chose to marry you. I loved you. I still love you.””

“But you knew who I was before we met.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew about Maya's trust.””

“Yes.””

I walked to the window and stared at the bright street outside.

For years, I had believed our marriage was an ordinary second chance at happiness. I had thought Renee had seen a lonely widower trying to raise a daughter and decided she wanted to build a life with us.

Instead, she'd entered our lives carrying a secret.

“Why didn't you tell me about Thomas?””

“Because he frightened me. He knew things about my childhood that I never told anyone. He knew where Jordan went to school. He knew details about our lives that I couldn't explain.””

Jordan stepped forward.

“He called me, too.””

Renee looked at him sharply.

“Jordan, no.””

He ignored her.

“He called from a blocked number a few weeks ago. He said Mom had promised him something, and if she didn't deliver, we'd all lose everything.””

I turned toward him.

“Did he threaten you directly?””

“He said I should make sure Mom did what she was supposed to do.””

Jordan rubbed his face.

“I didn't tell you because I thought he'd hurt her.””

Renee began crying again.

I looked at my stepson and saw a frightened teenager who had been carrying a burden no child should have had to carry.

“You should have told me,” I said gently.

“I know.””

“You don't have to protect adults from the consequences of their choices.””

Jordan nodded, tears gathering in his eyes.

“I know that now.””

I sat across from Renee.

“Tell me about the transfer.””

She stared at her hands.

“Thomas gave me the account information. He said the money was supposed to be moved temporarily while a dispute was resolved. He told me that if I didn't cooperate, he'd expose something about me.””

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I don't want to say it.””

“Then we'll let the attorneys ask you.””

“No!”” She grabbed my wrist.

“Darnell, you don't understand. If this goes to court, he will come after Jordan.””

I gently removed her hand.

“Then we involve the authorities and let them assess the threat. We don't hide financial records.””

Renee looked toward the front door.

“He said that if you contacted Camille's lawyer, the truth would come out.””

“What truth?””

She swallowed.

“He said Camille had discovered what he'd done years ago. He said she'd kept evidence that could destroy him.””

I leaned forward.

“Did you know what he had done?””

“No.””

“Renee.””

“I swear, I didn't know everything.””

I believed she might be telling the truth about that much.

But uncertainty was not innocence.

“You still allowed the money to be transferred into an account under your control.””

Her face crumpled.

“I thought I could move it back before anyone noticed.””

“How much did you spend?””

She didn't answer.

“How much?””

“Some of it.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“On what?””

“Bills. The house. Jordan's school expenses. My business.””

I stared at her.

“You used Maya's money for your business?””

“I was going to replace it!””

“When?””

“When I could!””

“And yesterday, you tried to throw her out because she found the statement?””

Renee pressed her hands to her face.

“I panicked.””

“You panicked because your secret was exposed.””

She didn't deny it.

I stood.

“I'm calling Marcus.””

Renee caught the edge of the table.

“Please, Darnell. Let me fix this.””

“You had months to fix it.””

“I can get the money back.””

“Can you?””

She looked away.

I took out my phone and called Marcus Whitfield. I explained the note, Renee's admission, and the alleged threats from Thomas.

Marcus listened without interrupting.

When I finished, his voice was firm.

“Do not confront Thomas. Preserve the note and any communications. I'll document what you've told me, and we can discuss the appropriate steps for reporting the threats and protecting Maya's interests.””

“Can you find out who received the remaining funds?””

“We'll pursue the banking records through the proper channels.””

I ended the call.

Renee was watching me.

“You told him everything?””

“I told him what happened.””

“You don't care what happens to me.””

I looked at her for a long moment.

“I cared about you enough to trust you with my family. You had a responsibility to honor that trust.””

She began to cry harder.

“I was scared.””

“So was Maya.””

That silenced her.

I went upstairs to check on my daughter.

Maya was sitting on her bed with her mother's old photograph album open across her lap. Sunlight fell across the sage-green hoodie she'd worn the previous day.

She looked up when I entered.

“Daddy, are we going to move?””

I sat beside her.

“No, sweetheart. You aren't being thrown out of your home.””

“Is Renee going to leave?””

“I don't know yet.””

Maya looked down at the album.

“Did Mommy know she was going to take the money?””

I wrapped my arm around her.

“I don't know what Mommy knew. But I know she wanted you to be safe, and I'm going to do everything I can to protect you.””

She leaned against me.

After a moment, she whispered, “I don't want everyone fighting because of me.””

I turned her face gently toward mine.

“Listen to me. None of this is your fault. Not one part of it.””

She nodded, but her eyes filled with tears.

I held her until she calmed down.

When I finally returned downstairs, Renee was standing beside the front door, holding her phone.

Her face was white.

“Darnell,” she whispered, “he knows.””

“Who?””

“Thomas.””

She turned the screen toward me.

An incoming message from an unknown number filled the display.

You were told not to let him speak to the lawyer.

Another message appeared.

Bring the original trust papers to the old house tonight. Come alone.

Renee's hands shook.

I took a photograph of the messages with my own phone.

“Don't respond,” I told her.

“He'll hurt Jordan.””

“We're going to report the threats.””

“You don't understand. He always follows through.””

I called Marcus again and told him about the messages. He urged us not to meet Thomas and to contact the authorities about the threats.

Renee sat down, trembling.

For the first time, I saw the possibility that she had been afraid of her father for far longer than I had known her.

But fear did not erase the harm she'd caused.

I stepped into the hallway and called the police non-emergency line to report the threatening messages, following the advice I'd received from Marcus.

While I spoke to the dispatcher, another notification appeared on my phone.

This one came from Denise.

It was a photograph of the sealed envelope she'd found among Camille's papers.

The envelope had been opened.

Inside was a handwritten note and a second photograph.

Denise's message read:

Darnell, I found the missing piece. Thomas didn't just know about the trust. He was the person who introduced Renee to the man who managed the account.

A second message followed.

And Camille left proof that Renee knew exactly what she was doing.

I stared at the screen.

Across the foyer, Renee was crying into her hands.

Then she looked up at me and whispered, “What did Denise find?””

I didn't answer.

May you like

Because the question I now needed answered was much worse.

If Renee had known exactly what she was doing, had her fear of Thomas been the reason she'd betrayed Maya—or had it simply been the excuse she'd been waiting to use?
