Chapter 2: The Man Who Had Been Stealing From My Father
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The broken wineglass glittered across the marble floor.
Daniel slowly removed his arm from Vanessa's waist.
“Arthur, this isn't what it looks like.””
My father let out a humorless laugh.
“Really? Because it looks like you're kissing my wife in my house while wearing my watch.””
Daniel adjusted his cuffs.
“I can explain both things.””
Vanessa stepped between them.
“Arthur, please. You're embarrassing yourself.””
My father turned toward her.
“I'm embarrassing myself?””
She lifted her chin.
“You stormed into the house without warning. Daniel was helping me with something, and you immediately started making accusations.””
I stared at her.
“Helping you with what? Kissing?””
Vanessa shot me a furious look.
“Emily, this is an adult conversation.””
“Then stop behaving like a teenager in my father's foyer.””
“Enough!”” my father barked.
The sound echoed through the mansion.
He looked at Daniel again.
“Take off the watch.””
Daniel glanced at his wrist.
“Arthur—”
“Take. It. Off.””
Daniel slowly unclasped it.
My father held out his hand.
The watch dropped into his palm.
He turned it over, examining the engraving.
Then he looked at his business partner.
“You told me you hadn't seen this.””
Daniel exhaled.
“I found it in the study.””
“When?””
“A few weeks ago.””
“And you decided to keep it?””
“I was going to return it.””
My father stared at him.
“You had eleven years to return it.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Vanessa walked toward the staircase.
“I'm not standing here listening to this.””
“Stop,” Arthur ordered.
She stopped, but didn't turn around.
“Where are you going?””
“To my bedroom.””
“This is my bedroom too. And I'd like an answer before anyone leaves.””
Vanessa turned slowly.
“Arthur, you have been emotionally absent for months. Daniel has been helping me because someone had to.””
My father looked genuinely stunned.
“Helping you?””
“Yes. You spend more time at the office than you do with your family. I was lonely.””
I almost laughed.
My mother had been gone for seven years, and my father had spent those years trying to rebuild his life. He had never been perfect, but he had never stopped caring about his family.
And Vanessa knew exactly how to use his guilt against him.
“Dad,” I said quietly, “she threw me out while you were at work.””
He looked at me.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Emily is exaggerating.””
“Am I?””
“You were being disrespectful.””
“You changed the locks on my bedroom.””
“Because you weren't using it.””
“My clothes are still inside!””
Vanessa shrugged.
“You can collect them later.””
My father slowly turned toward her.
“You changed the locks?””
She didn't answer.
“Without asking me?””
“Arthur, please. We needed boundaries.””
“Boundaries?”” he repeated.
He looked around the foyer, then toward the staircase.
“Where is Emily's mother's portrait?””
Vanessa's expression changed.
“I don't know.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“I had it moved.””
“Where?””
“In storage.””
My father closed his eyes briefly.
That portrait had been painted six months before my mother died.
She had been wearing a blue dress and laughing at something outside the frame.
My father had always said it was his favorite picture of her.
“Bring it back,” he said.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“I'm not rearranging the entire house because Emily is upset.””
My father looked at her for a long moment.
Then he pulled out his phone.
“I'm calling Robert.””
Robert Hayes was my father's personal attorney. He had handled the purchase of our house, my father's business contracts, and the estate paperwork after my mother died.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Arthur, don't be ridiculous.””
He ignored her.
“Robert, I need you at the house. Now.””
He ended the call.
Daniel moved toward the living room.
“I think we should discuss this privately.””
My father followed him with his eyes.
“There's nothing private about stealing from me.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“You need to be careful with your accusations.””
“Then give me a reason not to make them.””
Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
“Arthur, you're upset. Let's talk when you've calmed down.””
My father took a step closer.
“I trusted you with my company.””
“And I've helped you make millions.””
“Then why are you wearing my watch?””
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa suddenly walked toward the kitchen.
“I need some air.””
I watched her disappear.
Something about the way she moved made my stomach tighten.
She wasn't frightened by the affair being discovered.
She was frightened by something else.
I followed her.
She was standing beside the kitchen island, typing furiously on her phone.
When she noticed me, she immediately turned the screen facedown.
“Enjoying yourself?”” she asked.
“Not particularly.””
“You always wanted to come between your father and me.””
I stared at her.
“You threw me out of my own home.””
“Because you're impossible to live with.””
“Then why are you afraid of Dad finding out what you've been doing?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You don't know anything.””
“Maybe I know enough.””
She leaned closer.
“Listen to me, Emily. Your father is getting older. His company is becoming too much for him. He needs someone who understands how the world works.””
“And you think that's Daniel?””
She smiled coldly.
“I think it's time you accepted that your father won't be around forever.””
The words sent a chill down my spine.
Before I could answer, my father appeared in the kitchen doorway.
“Vanessa.””
She straightened immediately.
“What?””
“Where is the blue folder from my study?””
Her face went completely still.
“What blue folder?””
“The one containing my company documents.””
“I don't know.””
My father held up his phone.
“I've just checked the security system. You were in my study yesterday evening.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“I go into your study all the time.””
“Not when I'm away.””
Daniel appeared behind him.
“Arthur, this is becoming absurd.””
My father turned.
“Did you take the folder?””
“No.””
“Then perhaps you won't mind if Robert checks the office.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You can't do that without cause.””
My father looked directly at him.
“I think I've got plenty of cause.””
The doorbell rang.
Robert had arrived.
Within minutes, he was standing in the study with his leather briefcase open on the desk.
My father explained everything.
Robert listened without interrupting, occasionally writing something in a small notebook.
When my father finished, Robert removed his glasses.
“Arthur, I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Have you signed any documents recently authorizing changes to the company's ownership structure?””
My father frowned.
“No.””
Robert glanced toward Daniel.
“Are you certain?””
“Absolutely.””
Robert opened his briefcase and removed a thick envelope.
“Then we have a serious problem.””
He placed several documents on the desk.
I leaned forward.
The first page contained my father's name.
The second contained a company ownership agreement.
And the third showed a transfer of controlling shares.
My father read the page twice.
Then his hand tightened around the paper.
“This signature isn't mine.””
Robert nodded.
“I was afraid you'd say that.””
Daniel stepped backward.
Vanessa grabbed the edge of the desk.
I looked at the final page.
There was a date.
Three weeks earlier.
And beneath the signature was a name I never expected to see.
Vanessa Carter.
My stepmother hadn't simply been having an affair.
She had been preparing to take control of my father's company.
“Arthur,” Robert said quietly, “there's something else.””
My father looked up.
“What?””
Robert opened another document.
“The transfer was scheduled to become effective next Monday.””
My father stared at him.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me you didn't sign this.””
Vanessa's lips parted.
But before she could answer, Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a second envelope.
“Arthur,” he said, “there's no point pretending anymore.””
He placed it on the desk.
My father opened it.
Inside was a photocopy of a document bearing his signature.
At the bottom was a clause that made his face lose all color.
It stated that if he became medically or legally incapacitated, control of Carter Development would automatically pass to his designated representative.
The designated representative was Vanessa.
And the document had been witnessed by Daniel Reed.
My father slowly lowered the paper.
“When did I sign this?””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“You don't remember, do you?””
My father looked at her.
“Remember what?””
She smiled faintly.
“The night you collapsed at the charity dinner.””
My stomach dropped.
That had happened eight months earlier.
My father had suffered a medical emergency and spent two nights in hospital.
He had been unconscious for several hours.
Robert looked at the document again.
“Arthur, this is dated the day you were admitted.””
My father stared at Vanessa.
Then he whispered the words that changed everything.
“You forged my signature while I was in the hospital.””
Vanessa didn't deny it.
Instead, she looked at Daniel.
And Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.
“She's not the only person who wanted your company, Arthur.””
May you like
He pointed directly at me.
“Your daughter is the reason we had to move faster.””
