Chapter 4: The Dead Woman’s Secret Account

“Marcus! Open this door!””

Vanessa’s fist struck Claire’s front door again, rattling the brass handle. Inside the living room, Maya sat frozen beside me, staring at the phone that had slipped from her hands.

My dead wife’s name was attached to a bank account.

My daughter was listed as its emergency contact.

And Vanessa was standing outside, demanding to discuss what Rachel had left behind.

I looked at Claire.

“Did you tell her we were coming here?””

Claire shook her head.

“Absolutely not.””

“Then how did she find us?””

“I don’t know.””

The pounding stopped.

For three seconds, the house fell silent.

Then Vanessa called through the door again.

“If you don't open this door, I'll call the police and report that you've taken my stepdaughter without my permission!””

I stood so quickly that the coffee table shifted beneath my knee.

“She's my daughter,” I shouted.

“You don't get to threaten me with that.””

“Then open the door and let us talk like adults!””

Maya grabbed my sleeve.

“Dad, please don't let her take me home.””

I looked down at her.

“She's not taking you anywhere.””

I went to the door but kept the deadbolt engaged.

“What do you want, Vanessa?””

“To speak to my husband.””

“I'm listening.””

“Not through a door!””

“Then tell me why you followed us.””

“I didn't follow you. I knew you'd run to Claire the moment she started filling your head with nonsense.””

I glanced at my sister.

Claire had gone pale.

“You knew we'd come here?”” I asked.

Vanessa paused.

It was a small pause, but it told me more than her shouting had.

“I know you, Marcus. You always run to your sister when things get difficult.””

“Funny. You've spent three years telling me Claire is the one who causes problems.””

“Because she does!””

“Then why are you afraid of what she has to say?””

The silence that followed was unmistakable.

I heard Vanessa take a breath.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Marcus, whatever Claire showed you, it isn't what it looks like. Rachel made financial arrangements before she died. Some of them are complicated, and you weren't involved in every detail.””

“Rachel was my wife.””

“And I was trying to help you manage the mess she left behind.””

The words hit me like a slap.

A mess.

That was how Vanessa described the woman whose photograph still sat beside my bed.

I unlocked the door but opened it only a few inches, keeping one hand on the edge.

Vanessa stood on the porch, her handbag hanging from her shoulder. Her eyes moved past me immediately, searching the room.

“Where's Maya?””

“Inside.””

“I want to speak to her.””

“No.””

Her eyebrows rose.

“Excuse me?””

“You can speak to me.””

“She's my stepdaughter.””

“And I'm her father.””

Vanessa pushed against the door.

I held it firmly.

“Marcus, don't make me do this.””

“Do what?””

She looked over my shoulder at Claire.

“Call the police.””

“Go ahead.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

She stepped back, adjusted her handbag, and forced a smile.

“All right. If this is how you want to behave, I'll explain everything here.””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a thick envelope.

“I brought these documents because I knew Claire would distort the facts.””

She held the envelope toward me.

I didn't take it.

“What documents?””

“Rachel's original financial instructions.””

Claire appeared behind me.

“Rachel's trust was handled by an attorney, Vanessa. You weren't involved.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“I know enough to recognize a forged signature.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“You should be careful with accusations like that.””

“And you should be careful with documents that carry Marcus's name.””

I took the envelope from Vanessa.

Inside were photocopies of several financial forms, including a document that appeared to authorize a change to Rachel's trust.

My name was printed at the bottom.

My signature was underneath it.

Again, it looked convincing.

Again, the final letter sloped in the wrong direction.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

“From the attorney's office.””

“Which attorney?””

“Daniel Cross.””

Claire and I exchanged a look.

Westbridge Private Holdings.

The name from the email.

“Why is a man connected to Westbridge handling my wife's trust?”” I asked.

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“Because he's a financial administrator. He specializes in complicated estates.””

“Who hired him?””

“I did.””

The admission came too quickly.

I lifted my eyes.

“You hired him to manage Rachel's trust?””

“To protect Maya's inheritance.””

“Then why is your name on a request to transfer the money?””

“Because someone needed to take responsibility.””

“For what?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Rachel wasn't as financially responsible as you think. There were debts you never knew about.””

“That's a lie,” Claire said.

Vanessa rounded on her.

“You weren't married to her!””

“No, but I knew her.””

“You knew the version she wanted you to know.””

Claire stepped forward.

“And you knew exactly how to exploit the version Marcus wanted to believe about you.””

For a moment, the two women stared at each other.

Then Vanessa looked back at me.

“Marcus, I am your wife. I have spent years helping you raise Maya. I have put my own needs aside for this family. And now you're letting your sister convince you that I'm some kind of criminal?””

I thought about Maya's trembling hands.

The accusation of theft.

The screenshot.

The forged signature.

The threat to make my daughter disappear from my life if I didn't cooperate.

“I don't know what you are anymore,” I said.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“You can't mean that.””

“I mean I want an explanation that doesn't involve blaming a sixteen-year-old girl.””

She wiped her cheek.

Then she did something that chilled me more than her anger.

She smiled.

“Fine. You want the truth? Ask your daughter why Rachel made her the emergency contact on that account.””

I turned toward Maya.

She was standing at the end of the hallway, her face white.

“Why would your mother do that, sweetheart?”” I asked gently.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Of course she doesn't.””

Maya shook her head.

“I was nine when Mom died!””

“And yet the bank records say otherwise.””

“What records?”” I demanded.

Vanessa pulled a single sheet from the envelope and held it up.

It showed the account details Elaine had mentioned. The account had been opened years before Rachel's death, but a note beside Maya's name indicated a recent verification.

The date was three weeks ago.

The same week Vanessa had asked me to sign several financial documents.

My hands began to shake.

“Who verified this account?””

Vanessa's smile faded.

“I don't know.””

“Your name is on the paperwork.””

“That's not the same thing.””

“Then explain it.””

She glanced toward the street.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell us everything.

Instead, she stepped away from the door.

“Ask Rachel's lawyer,” she said.

“If you can find him.””

Then she walked down the porch steps.

I watched her climb into her SUV and drive away.

When I closed the door, Claire took the envelope from my hands and examined the documents.

“Marcus, there's something wrong with these dates.””

“What?””

She pointed to the final page.

“The trust amendment was supposedly signed three weeks ago. But look at the notary's stamp.””

I leaned closer.

The stamp bore the name of a notary who had died five years earlier.

My stomach turned.

Claire looked at me.

“Someone didn't just forge your signature.””

She pointed toward the bottom of the page.

“They forged the entire authorization.””

My phone rang.

Elaine.

I answered immediately.

“Tell me you found something.””

“I did,” she said.

“But you need to understand that this may involve more than the transfer.””

“What do you mean?””

“The account connected to Rachel's name was accessed last night using a device registered to your home.””

I stared at the front door through which Vanessa had just left.

Then Elaine spoke the words that changed everything.

“Mr. Bennett, the device was registered under your wife's name.””
