Chapter 3: The Woman in the Photograph
“Who is Evelyn Hart?””
My question hung between us.
Vanessa stood in the doorway, staring at the notebook.
For the first time since I'd known her, she looked genuinely afraid.
“Put that away, Daniel.””
“Who is she?””
“It's complicated.””
“Then start explaining.””
Vanessa stepped into the room.
“Give me the notebook.””
I moved it behind my back.
“No.””
“Daniel, please.””
“You gave my daughter something from my medication cabinet. You lied to me about what it was. Now I find a photograph of my dead wife with a woman who looks exactly like you.””
I held up the picture.
“Who is Evelyn Hart?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She was Lila's sister.””
I stared at her.
“Lila never told me she had a sister.””
“Because they hadn't spoken in years.””
I looked again at the photograph.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
“Why does she look like you?””
“Because we're twins.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“What?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Evelyn and I are identical twins.””
I stared at her, trying to make the words fit into everything I knew.
For five years, I had lived with a woman who apparently had a twin sister connected to my dead wife.
And I had never heard her name.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Evelyn was dangerous.””
I almost laughed.
“Dangerous?””
“She had problems, Daniel. Serious problems. She hurt people. She manipulated everyone around her.””
“And Lila knew her?””
“They were close when they were younger.””
“Then why was she standing beside Lila in this photograph?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don't know.””
“That's a lie.””
She reached for the notebook.
I stepped back.
“Don't touch it.””
Her face changed.
The fear disappeared.
Anger took its place.
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
“Then help me understand.””
“You think you're some perfect father? You work all day. You leave your child with other people. You barely notice what's happening in your own home.””
“Don't you dare turn this around.””
“I'm the one who has been raising Amara!””
“Then why did she have to beg me to take her to the hospital?””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
No answer came.
I looked down at the notebook again.
Several pages contained dates, addresses, and short handwritten notes.
One entry caught my attention.
February 18 — D.C. meeting confirmed. Daniel must never know.
Another read:
Amara asked about the hospital photograph again. Destroy remaining copies.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What happened on February eighteenth?””
Vanessa reached for the notebook again.
“Daniel, stop reading.””
“What happened?””
She grabbed my wrist.
“Give it to me!””
I pulled away.
“Get out of my way.””
She stumbled backward, knocking a framed photograph off the desk.
It landed face down.
The glass cracked.
I picked it up.
It was a picture of Lila and me on our wedding day.
Someone had drawn a thick black line across Lila's face.
I stared at it.
“Did you do this?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Did you?””
“She was dead, Daniel!””
Her voice cracked through the office.
“You were still in love with her! Every photograph, every memory, every little story about her! I was living in the shadow of a dead woman!””
I looked at her.
“And you thought hurting her daughter would fix that?””
Vanessa's expression twisted.
“I never wanted to hurt Amara.””
“Then what did you give her?””
She looked toward the floor.
“I needed her asleep.””
“For what?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Rachel.
Amara woke up. She wants to talk to you. She says she remembers something important.
I called immediately.
“Rachel?””
Her voice sounded urgent.
“Daniel, you need to come back.””
“Is Amara okay?””
“She is awake, but she's frightened. The doctor asked her about the medicine, and she said something I think you need to hear.””
“What?””
Rachel hesitated.
“She said Vanessa wasn't alone when she gave it to her.””
I looked at my wife.
Vanessa's face had gone completely white.
“Who was with her?””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“A woman.””
I looked down at the photograph again.
The woman standing beside Lila.
The woman Vanessa claimed was her twin sister.
“Did Amara describe her?””
“Yes.””
Rachel paused.
“She said the woman had the same face as Vanessa, but she called her Mommy.””
My fingers went numb.
“That's impossible.””
“Daniel, there's something else.””
“What?””
“Amara says the woman told her that her real mother wasn't dead.””
I couldn't breathe.
I turned toward Vanessa.
She was already backing away from me.
“Tell me what this means,” I demanded.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Daniel, you need to understand something.””
“Then explain it!””
She glanced at the photograph of Lila.
Then she looked directly into my eyes.
“Lila didn't die the night you were told she died.””
I felt the room disappear around me.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Your first wife was alive when I married you.””
I gripped the edge of the desk.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
May you like
Then she whispered six words that changed everything.
“She has been living in this house.””
