Chapter 13: The Woman My Father Warned Me About
I read Vanessa's messages until the words stopped making sense.
My wife had met my father.
Not in a dream. Not in some vague coincidence. There was a photograph proving they had sat across from each other at a restaurant years before I ever knew she existed.
And my father had warned Andrew to keep her away from me.
I looked at the photograph again.
Vanessa was younger, but unmistakable. Her hair was longer, and she wore a pale blouse I had never seen. My father sat opposite her, his expression serious.
"Where was this taken?"" I asked.
Andrew glanced at the picture.
"A restaurant in Hartford. Thomas arranged the meeting after discovering that Richard had been asking questions about you.""
"Why would Richard care about me?""
"Because you were the future beneficiary of the trust.""
I turned toward Patricia.
"Did you know Vanessa?""
She shook her head.
"No. I only knew Richard had a young woman helping him gather information.""
I looked back at Andrew.
"How did Dad know her?""
"She had been working for a marketing agency that handled promotional materials for one of Richard's companies. Thomas discovered she had been asking about Northstar, the family trust, and the property.""
"Then why did he meet her?""
"To find out what she wanted.""
I stared at the photograph.
"What did she tell him?""
Andrew opened another folder.
"Thomas wrote a summary after the meeting.""
He slid a page toward me.
My father's handwriting was unmistakable.
The young woman claims she is no longer working with Richard. She says she wants to start over. I don't believe her. She knows Marcus is my son, and she has asked questions about his future.
I kept reading.
I offered her money to leave Marcus alone. She refused. She said she had already made a promise to Richard.
I looked up.
"What promise?""
Andrew shook his head.
"Thomas never found out.""
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"Where are you?""
"At the house.""
"Stay there.""
"Marcus, please. I need to explain.""
"You can explain everything when I get there.""
"Don't bring Andrew.""
I looked at the lawyer.
"Why?""
"Because he knows what happened. He knows what your father did.""
I felt my anger rise.
"What did my father do?""
Vanessa was quiet.
Then she whispered, "He saved me once.""
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Andrew stood.
"You're not going alone.""
"I won't.""
We drove back to the house with Patricia following behind us. The police had released David into temporary custody arrangements pending further investigation, and officers remained in contact with Andrew.
When we arrived, Vanessa was sitting at the dining table.
She had placed a folder in front of her.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
"Where's Mom?"" I asked.
"Upstairs. She's resting.""
I didn't sit.
"Start talking.""
Vanessa looked at Andrew.
Then at me.
"I met your father through Claire. She introduced me to Richard because he wanted someone to help with communications for a property project.""
"You were working for Richard?""
"At first, yes.""
"And then?""
"Richard asked me to find out more about Northstar. He said your father had stolen money from him and that he wanted to recover what was rightfully his.""
"Did you believe him?""
"I did.""
I shook my head.
"You knew about the trust before we met.""
"Yes.""
"You knew I was the beneficiary.""
"Yes.""
"And you married me anyway.""
Vanessa lowered her head.
"I didn't plan to fall in love with you.""
I almost laughed.
"That's supposed to make this better?""
"No. But it's true.""
She opened the folder.
Inside were copies of emails, payment records, and a handwritten note.
"I stopped working with Richard after I met your father.""
"Why?""
"Because Thomas showed me documents proving Richard had lied. He showed me the transfers, the forged signatures, and the missing company money.""
"Then why did you stay connected to Claire?""
"Because Claire was my friend. I thought I could help her get away from her father.""
I looked at the documents.
"How did you get involved with Richard again?""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"After your father died, Claire told me that Thomas had left behind a fortune. She said Richard was going to spend years fighting to recover it. She asked me to keep an eye on the family.""
"And you agreed?""
"I was young. I was afraid of losing everything. Richard threatened to expose me as someone who had helped him gather information.""
I leaned forward.
"Then you found me.""
She nodded.
"At a charity event. I recognized your surname immediately.""
"You deliberately approached me.""
"Yes.""
The admission landed harder than I expected.
"How long did you know?""
"From the beginning.""
I looked at Andrew.
He remained silent.
Vanessa continued.
"I was supposed to get close to you, learn about the trust, and report anything Richard needed. But I fell in love with you. I wanted to stop.""
"Yet you took the money.""
She began crying.
"Richard contacted me six weeks ago. He said he had evidence that could destroy my life. He offered me two million dollars to help him gain control of the house and the trust.""
"And you accepted.""
"I took seventy thousand. I thought I could pay him back before you found out.""
"You used my mother's medical situation to pressure us.""
"I know.""
"You canceled her treatment.""
Vanessa covered her face.
"I was told it would make the trust easier to challenge if she became incapacitated. I didn't think—"
"Don't.""
My voice was quiet.
But she stopped speaking.
"You don't get to tell me you didn't think. You knew my mother needed treatment. You knew she was frightened. You used that fear.""
Vanessa looked up.
"I am sorry.""
I stared at her for a long moment.
Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.
"Why did my father offer you money to stay away from me?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Because he knew Richard would use me.""
"Did he threaten you?""
"No. He told me that if I truly wanted to protect you, I should disappear from your life.""
"Why didn't you?""
"Because I was angry. I thought he was trying to control me.""
She opened the folder and removed a final page.
It was a letter from my father.
Vanessa, you may believe you are choosing between two men. You are not. You are choosing whether to become part of something that will destroy an innocent family. If you truly care about my son, leave him untouched.
I read it twice.
At the bottom was another sentence.
Richard will never stop until he gets what he wants. Do not mistake his promises for protection.
I placed the letter on the table.
"Why did you keep this?""
"Because I knew one day you would find out.""
I looked at her.
"Did you know who ordered the accident?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
"Did Claire?""
"I don't know.""
"Where is Claire now?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"She has the original recording.""
I froze.
"What recording?""
"The one Richard made after the accident. He recorded a conversation with someone who arranged everything.""
"Who?""
Vanessa looked at Andrew.
"She told me the voice belongs to someone who has been protecting this family for twenty years.""
Andrew's face drained of color.
"Where is the recording?""
Vanessa slid a note across the table.
It contained an address and a time.
"Claire wants to meet you tonight.""
I looked at the note.
Then I looked at my wife.
"You could have told me all of this before.""
"I was afraid.""
"Of Richard?""
She shook her head.
"Of what you'd discover about the person who raised you.""
I turned toward the staircase.
My mother stood at the top, holding the railing.
She had heard everything.
"Marcus," she said quietly.
I walked toward her.
She looked at Vanessa, then at me.
"There's something I never told you about the night your father died.""
My heart sank.
"What now, Mom?""
She swallowed.
"Your father called me before the accident. He said he had discovered who was behind everything.""
"Who?""
She closed her eyes.
"He said the person was coming to our house.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"Did they come?""
My mother nodded.
"Yes.""
May you like
She opened her eyes.
"It was Andrew.""
