Chapter 7: The Signature They Needed
At 10:17 p.m., I discovered that someone had scheduled a transfer of nearly half a million dollars from my company.
At 10:19, I learned that the transfer was connected to a document I had never signed.
And at 10:21, my wife finally admitted that my business partner had been telling her I was planning to abandon our marriage.
I stood in the kitchen, staring at the authorization on my laptop, while Vanessa sat across from me with both hands wrapped around a glass of untouched water.
“Tell me everything Gregory said about the revised agreement,” I demanded.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know the details.””
“Then tell me what you do know.””
“He said the company needed to restructure before the acquisition could go through. He said you were being stubborn about the terms.””
“What terms?””
“He wouldn't explain everything to me.””
“Did he tell you I was transferring money to another account?””
“No.””
“Did he tell you I was selling my shares?””
She hesitated.
“He said you might have to.””
I leaned forward.
“Vanessa, half a million dollars is scheduled to leave my company tomorrow morning. Somebody has used my name to authorize it. If you know anything that could help me stop this, now is the time to tell me.””
Her glass rattled against the table.
“Richard said Gregory had a way to protect the money if the acquisition failed.””
“Protect whose money?””
“I don't know.””
“Whose account was supposed to receive it?””
“I never saw the account details.””
I turned the laptop toward her.
“Read the authorization notes.””
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed when she reached the final line.
FINAL SIGNATURE REQUIRED AFTER FAMILY RESOLUTION.
“What does that mean?”” she whispered.
“That is what I'm trying to find out.””
I called Daniel Price, my controller, and put him on speaker.
He answered sounding exhausted.
“Marcus, I've been reviewing the transaction.””
“Tell me what you've found.””
“The transfer hasn't gone through yet. It's scheduled for 8:30 tomorrow morning, but the authorization appears to have been entered using your credentials.””
“Can you cancel it?””
“I've requested an immediate hold through the bank's fraud department. They need confirmation from you and may require additional documentation. I've also restricted the compromised login.””
“Good. What about the destination account?””
“It's held by a company called Westbridge Capital Services. The beneficiary information was added three weeks ago.””
I glanced at Vanessa.
Three weeks.
The same period when Richard had first appeared in her life.
“Who added it?”” I asked.
“The access log shows an administrative session. I'm still verifying which device was used.””
“Preserve everything. No one changes or deletes any records.””
“Already doing that.””
“Has Gregory accessed the acquisition account?””
Daniel paused.
“Yes. His account viewed the transaction details yesterday afternoon.””
My stomach tightened.
“Did he approve the transfer?””
“Not directly. But the authorization was created shortly afterward.””
“Send me the logs and notify the bank that I dispute the transaction.””
“I will.””
I ended the call.
Vanessa stared at the table.
“You think Gregory stole from you.””
“I think someone is trying to move company money without my permission.””
“He said he was protecting the business.””
“By forging my signature?””
She shook her head.
“I never saw a forged signature on the financial documents.””
“You saw one on the guardianship agreement.””
“I didn't know it was connected.””
“You knew enough to keep quiet.””
She flinched.
I regretted the sharpness of my tone, but I couldn't take the words back. My son had spent the evening terrified that he would be sent away, and every new revelation suggested that someone had viewed his suffering as a useful business strategy.
I looked toward the stairs.
“I'm going to check on Noah.””
Vanessa stood.
“Can I see him?””
“No.””
Her expression collapsed.
“Marcus, please.””
“He needs to sleep without worrying that you'll send him away.””
“I wouldn't do that now.””
“You already did it once.””
She lowered her head.
I left her in the kitchen.
Noah was awake, sitting beneath the covers with his mother's photograph beside him.
“Dad?””
“Hey, buddy. Everything okay?””
He nodded, then looked toward the door.
“Is Vanessa still downstairs?””
“Yes.””
“Is she going to be mad tomorrow?””
“I don't know how she'll feel tomorrow. But I know what I'm going to do. I'm going to make sure you're safe.””
He studied me.
“Can I go to school?””
“Of course.””
“Will Richard be there?””
“No.””
“What if he waits outside?””
I sat beside him.
“If you see him, you go straight to a teacher. You don't get into a car with anyone unless I've told you directly that it's safe.””
Noah nodded.
Then he asked the question I had been dreading.
“Dad, did I make all this happen?””
I felt my throat tighten.
“No.””
“But they keep talking about me.””
“That's because the adults involved have made terrible choices. You didn't cause any of them.””
He stared at his mother's picture.
“Maybe if I didn't cry so much, Vanessa wouldn't want me gone.””
I moved closer.
“Listen to me. You are allowed to miss your mom. You are allowed to cry. You're allowed to have bad days and ask questions and feel angry that she's not here.””
His eyes filled.
“And if I still miss her when I'm older?””
“Then you'll still be allowed to miss her.””
He leaned into me, and I wrapped my arms around him.
“I miss her too,” I whispered.
For the first time that night, Noah didn't try to hide his tears.
I stayed until he fell asleep.
Then I returned downstairs and found Vanessa standing beside the front window.
She was holding her phone.
“Richard called,” she said.
I stopped.
“What did he want?””
“He said you were making a mistake.””
I held out my hand.
“Let me see.””
She passed me the phone.
There was a message from Richard.
You need to get Marcus to sign the agreement tomorrow. If he refuses, Gregory will activate the alternative arrangement. Do not contact me again until you have an answer.
I read it twice.
“What agreement?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“He wouldn't show me the entire document. He said I didn't need to understand the business side.””
I opened the attachment she had received with the message.
It was a draft agreement concerning the acquisition of Bennett Construction's commercial property portfolio.
The document transferred substantial decision-making authority to a newly created holding company.
I scanned the list of signatories.
My name appeared first.
Gregory's appeared second.
But the third name made me stop breathing.
*Richard Cole.*
He was not listed as a consultant.
He was listed as the proposed managing director of the new holding company.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know Richard was supposed to take control of part of my business?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I kept reading.
The agreement included a clause stating that if I became unavailable to manage the company, the proposed managing director could exercise temporary authority over specified assets.
The definition of unavailable was unusually broad.
It included prolonged incapacity, a disputed transfer of authority, and certain unresolved legal proceedings.
I thought about the forged guardianship agreement.
The planned removal of Noah.
The mysterious payment to the placement company.
The scheduled transfer of $480,000.
They weren't separate incidents.
They were pieces of the same machine.
Someone wanted me distracted, financially vulnerable, and surrounded by problems that would make me more likely to sign whatever they put in front of me.
I photographed every page and sent it to Patricia.
Then I called Gregory.
He answered almost immediately.
“Marcus, we need to talk.””
“We do. Who is Richard Cole?””
“Someone who was supposed to help us complete the acquisition.””
“Why is he listed as the managing director of a holding company that would control my assets?””
Gregory went silent.
“Who told you that?””
“The agreement carrying my name.””
“Listen. The structure is temporary.””
“Did you know about the transfer scheduled for tomorrow?””
“I know there's a transaction pending.””
“Did you authorize it?””
“I approved the restructuring proposal.””
“That's not what I asked.””
His voice hardened.
“Marcus, you don't understand the pressure we're under. If the acquisition collapses, the company could lose millions.””
“Then we lose the acquisition.””
“You can't just walk away.””
“Watch me.””
“You're putting forty-three employees at risk because of a family disagreement.””
I stared at the phone.
“You used my son to force me into signing a financial agreement.””
“I never told anyone to remove Noah!””
“But you knew they were planning to.””
Gregory didn't answer.
I heard him breathe.
Then he said, “You should think very carefully about what happens if you refuse to sign.””
The line went dead.
I stood motionless.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, it was a message from Patricia.
Do not sign anything. I have reviewed the document. The proposed authority transfer is broader than the summary suggests. We need the original transaction records and independent legal review before anyone proceeds.
I replied that I understood.
Then I heard a soft sound from the hallway.
Vanessa was standing there.
“I need to tell you something,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“What now?””
She held out her phone.
“Richard sent me a message before the driveway incident. I didn't show it to you because I was afraid.””
I read the screen.
If Marcus returns early, keep Noah away from him until I arrive. Once he sees the signed agreement, he'll understand there is no other option.
I looked up.
“Signed by whom?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“I thought he meant the placement paperwork.””
I looked at the message again.
There was a second line.
The original agreement is already in the house.
I stared at her.
“What original agreement?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Then, from somewhere inside the house, I heard the unmistakable sound of a door opening.
And a man's voice called my name.
“Marcus? We need to finish what we started.””
It was Gregory.
May you like
He had come to my house in the middle of the night.
And he wasn't alone.
