Chapter 10: The Daughter My Father Never Told Me About
I stared at the photograph until the edges began to blur.
Camille was standing beside my father.
A little boy stood between them.
And on the back, my father's handwriting revealed something I had never imagined.
Michael, meet my son. He deserves to know who his father is.
I read the sentence again.
Then I looked at my mother.
"Mom, what does this mean?""
She covered her face.
"I was afraid this day would come.""
"Did Dad have another child?""
She nodded.
I stood up so quickly that my chair scraped against the hospital floor.
"How long have you known?""
"Since before your father died.""
I stared at her.
"All these years?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know everything. I only knew that there was a woman who had been involved with your father before he met me.""
I looked down at the photograph.
"Was Camille that woman's daughter?""
"No.""
"Then who was the boy?""
My mother took a shaky breath.
"Your father's son.""
I felt as though the room had tilted.
My father had another child.
A brother I had never known existed.
And Camille had apparently known about him before she married me.
"What's his name?""
"I don't know.""
"Mom, you must know something.""
She nodded toward the photograph.
"His name was Daniel. Your father told me once that the boy's mother had died shortly after he was born.""
"Why didn't Dad bring him home?""
My mother looked down.
"Because Richard Bennett wouldn't allow it.""
I frowned.
"What does Richard have to do with my father's child?""
My mother hesitated.
Then she began explaining.
Before my father married Evelyn, he had worked alongside Richard Bennett in a small hospitality investment business.
Richard had a sister named Margaret.
Margaret had been involved with my father years earlier.
When she became pregnant, Richard insisted that the child be raised under his family name.
My father wanted to acknowledge Daniel.
He wanted to provide for him.
But Richard threatened to destroy my father's career if he challenged the arrangement.
My father eventually agreed to provide financial support through a private trust.
"Was Daniel really his son?"" I asked.
My mother nodded.
"Your father showed me the original birth certificate.""
"Where is it?""
"I don't know. He kept it with the company papers.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Then why does Camille appear in this?""
My mother wiped her eyes.
"Because Camille was Daniel's wife.""
I stopped breathing.
"What?""
"They married very young. I believe they had a child together.""
I sat down slowly.
Camille had been married before me.
She had a child.
And she had somehow known about my father's secret family.
"Did Dad know Camille?""
"Yes.""
"How well?""
My mother hesitated.
"He knew her as Daniel's wife. He was trying to help them financially before everything happened.""
I stared at her.
"You're telling me Camille knew my father before she ever met me?""
My mother nodded.
I felt a cold wave move through my chest.
Suddenly, our first meeting at the charity auction seemed less like coincidence.
The way Camille had known about my childhood.
The way she had praised my mother.
The way she had asked questions about my father's business.
Every memory was being rearranged.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
"Tell me you have something.""
"I've found the original birth records.""
"Who is Camille's real father?""
"Her biological father is Daniel Cole.""
I closed my eyes.
"Daniel?""
"Your father's firstborn son.""
I looked at the photograph.
The little boy.
My father's son.
Camille's former husband.
My half-brother.
I felt sick.
"Then Camille is...""
"Your former sister-in-law," Daniel finished.
I couldn't speak.
He continued.
"There's more. The marriage certificate shows Camille married Daniel in 2015. The divorce was finalized in 2018.""
I looked toward my mother.
She was crying silently.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Daniel answered carefully.
"Because the records indicate that Daniel disappeared in 2019. There was an investigation, but it was closed without a clear conclusion.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Disappeared?""
"Yes.""
"Was he reported missing?""
"By Camille.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Find out everything about that investigation.""
"I already started.""
"Daniel, I want the original records, the divorce filing, everything.""
"Understood.""
I ended the call.
For several minutes, I couldn't move.
My wife had once been married to my half-brother.
She had known my father.
She had known about the inheritance.
And she had married me without telling me any of it.
I turned toward my mother.
"Did Dad ever tell you why he was helping Daniel?""
She nodded.
"He said Daniel was in trouble.""
"What kind of trouble?""
"Richard wanted control of the family company. Daniel had discovered that money was being transferred through accounts connected to Margaret Holdings.""
I looked at her.
"The same company Camille uses now?""
"Yes.""
My hands curled into fists.
"So this has been going on for decades.""
My mother nodded.
"Your father was trying to protect Daniel. He said the boy was in danger.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Then why did Daniel disappear?""
My mother didn't answer.
Instead, she reached beneath her pillow and removed a small envelope.
"I kept this because I thought one day you might need it.""
I opened it.
Inside was a letter addressed to my father.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
Michael, I know what Richard is planning. Camille has agreed to help him, but she doesn't understand what she's getting involved in. Please get Daniel out before it's too late.
There was no signature.
Only one word at the bottom.
*Evelyn.*
I looked at my mother.
"You wrote this?""
She nodded.
"I sent it to your father the week before he died.""
"Did he respond?""
She looked away.
"He called me that night.""
"What did he say?""
My mother began crying again.
"He said he was coming home.""
I held the letter.
"Mom, what happened to Daniel?""
She whispered:
"I think Camille knows.""
At 4:30 that afternoon, Jonathan arrived with an update.
He had spoken to the original trustees and secured a temporary restriction on any transfer involving my father's shares.
But the information he brought was more disturbing.
"Adrian, I've reviewed the historical corporate records.""
He placed several pages on the table.
"Your father held sixty-two percent of Lakeshore Hospitality Properties. But after his death, those shares were never transferred to you.""
"Why not?""
"Because a temporary custodial agreement was established.""
"By whom?""
Jonathan looked at me.
"Richard Bennett.""
I stared at him.
"How was that possible?""
"He submitted documentation claiming your father had appointed him as temporary custodian.""
"Did my father sign it?""
"That's what we need to investigate.""
Jonathan turned another page.
"However, there's a second beneficiary listed.""
I looked down.
A name appeared beneath mine.
*Daniel Michael Cole.*
My half-brother.
"Why does he have a claim?""
"Because your father apparently divided the beneficial interest between both sons.""
"How much?""
"Thirty-one percent each.""
I looked at the document.
"Then why has Richard controlled everything?""
Jonathan gave me a grim look.
"Because someone has been collecting the dividends under a separate management agreement for twenty-seven years.""
"Who?""
He placed another sheet in front of me.
The answer was printed clearly.
*Margaret Holdings LLC.*
My wife and her father hadn't simply been trying to steal my mother's house.
They had been collecting money from my father's company for nearly three decades.
And now I knew whose money they had been using.
I looked at Jonathan.
"How much?""
He checked the financial summary.
"Approximately twenty-six million dollars in distributions and related transfers, pending a full audit.""
I sat back.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
*If you want to know what happened to Daniel, come to the old Lakeshore Hotel tonight. Alone.*
May you like
A second message followed.
*Bring your father's letter.*
