Chapter 8: The Person Who Was Watching Us All Along
My mother’s house had never felt far away.
But that night, the distance between the warehouse and home felt endless.
Every second mattered.
I didn’t remember getting back into the car.
I didn’t remember the drive.
All I remembered was the photograph.
The overturned chair.
The open envelope.
The empty room.
My mother was somewhere inside that house.
And someone had been there before me.
“Drive faster,” Vanessa whispered.
I looked at her.
“You’re the one who told me not to rush into traps.””
She stared straight ahead.
“This isn’t a trap anymore.””
“What is it?””
Her voice was quiet.
“It’s a warning.””
I gripped the steering wheel.
“From who?””
Neither of us answered.
Because we both knew.
The person behind everything wasn’t trying to hide anymore.
They wanted us to know they were watching.
They wanted us scared.
When we finally reached my mother’s house, the front door was slightly open.
My stomach dropped.
I parked without even turning off the engine.
“Stay behind me,” I told Vanessa.
She nodded.
We stepped inside.
“Mom?””
No answer.
The living room was exactly like the picture.
The chair was knocked over.
The lamp was broken.
The old envelope was lying on the floor.
But my mother was gone.
“Mom!””
I ran through the house.
Kitchen.
Bathroom.
Bedroom.
Nothing.
Then I saw it.
The back door.
Open.
Rainwater covered the floor.
My heart pounded.
“She was taken.””
Vanessa appeared behind me.
“No.””
I turned.
“What?””
“She left.””
“How do you know?””
Vanessa pointed.
On the kitchen table was a cup of tea.
Still warm.
Next to it was a handwritten note.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
The handwriting was my mother’s.
*Ethan,*
*If you found this, then I was right. Someone came looking for the envelope.*
I kept reading.
*I’m sorry I lied to you. I’m sorry I let you grow up believing your family was untouched by what happened. I wanted to protect you from a truth that destroyed your father.*
My vision blurred.
The note continued.
*But there is one thing you need to understand. The person you should fear is not the one who admits they are dangerous. It is the one who has spent years pretending to protect you.*
I stopped.
Vanessa read over my shoulder.
Her face changed.
Because she understood too.
My mother continued.
*The evidence your father left was never inside the envelope. The envelope was only a key.*
I looked around the room.
A key.
A key to what?
The final line made my blood run cold.
*Find the person who has been closest to Ethan since before the beginning.*
The note ended.
No name.
No explanation.
Just a warning.
I lowered the paper.
“Before the beginning?””
Vanessa whispered.
“She means before your marriage.””
I looked at her.
“What are you saying?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Give me another half-truth.””
She looked away.
And that told me everything.
“What do you know?””
She stayed silent.
“Vanessa.””
Finally, she whispered:
“Your father asked me to watch someone.””
“Who?””
She swallowed.
“You.””
The words made no sense.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he was afraid someone would get close to you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So my father thought my own wife was dangerous?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“He thought someone else would use me to reach you.””
The room became quiet.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the note.
“I don’t know.””
I stepped back.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why do you look like you know?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I do know one thing.””
“What?””
“The person your father feared most was already inside your life.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
I thought about every person I trusted.
My mother.
Vanessa.
My friends.
The company employees.
People who had been around me for years.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
This time, it wasn’t from an unknown number.
It was from my mother.
*Do not trust anyone until you find the hidden room.*
My heart stopped.
Hidden room?
My mother had lived in that house for twenty years.
There was no hidden room.
I looked around.
Then I remembered.
My father’s old study.
The room nobody entered after he died.
The room my mother had kept locked.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“My father’s study.””
Her face changed.
“What about it?””
“My mother never opened it.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Ethan…”
“What?””
“Your father told me something about that room.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He said if you ever found out the truth, that would be where you needed to go.””
The study smelled like dust and old memories.
I unlocked the door with the key hidden behind an old photograph.
The same place my father used to keep spare keys.
Inside, everything was untouched.
His desk.
His books.
His chair.
For a moment, I could almost see him sitting there.
Writing.
Planning.
Trying to save us.
I walked to the desk.
Nothing.
I checked the drawers.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something.
The bookshelf.
One book was slightly pulled out.
A detail so small nobody would notice.
But my father would have wanted me to notice.
I pulled it.
A section of the wall moved.
Behind it was a small hidden compartment.
Inside was a box.
No lock.
Just my name.
*ETHAN.*
I opened it.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Photos.
Recordings.
And one envelope.
But this one was different.
Because it had my name written on it.
Not by my father.
By someone else.
I picked it up.
The handwriting was familiar.
Too familiar.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“What is it?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew.
I knew before I opened it.
I tore the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
A letter dated twelve years earlier.
The year Vanessa and I got married.
The first line made my hands go cold.
*Ethan,*
*If you are reading this, then Vanessa failed to keep my secret.*
I looked at my wife.
Her face turned pale.
“What?””
I kept reading.
*I trusted her because she was the only person who could get close enough to protect you. But if this letter reaches you, then the person I feared has already started moving.*
My breathing became heavier.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Your name is on this.””
“I didn’t write that.””
“Then explain it.””
She stepped closer.
“I can’t.””
The anger returned.
“Not again.””
“Ethan, listen to me.””
“No.””
I held up the letter.
“My father trusted you with a secret before we even got married.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“I couldn’t.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because your father told me if I told you too early…”
She stopped.
“Tell me.””
She whispered:
“If I told you too early, the person he was watching would know.””
The room felt colder.
“Who was he watching?””
Vanessa looked at the letter.
Then at me.
And finally said the name.
The name I never expected.
The name that made every memory of my life feel different.
“Your father was watching…”
She swallowed.
“Your uncle.””
I froze.
“My uncle?””
She nodded.
“The man who helped raise you after your father died.””
I stared at her.
Because there was only one person she could mean.
My father’s younger brother.
The man who had attended every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every family event.
The man everyone called my second father.
Then my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
The caller ID appeared.
And my blood turned cold.
May you like
Because the person calling me was the same man Vanessa had just named.
*Uncle Richard.*
