Chapter 5 - THE MAN BEHIND MY WIFEThomas Reed did not come to work Monday.

That told me enough.

His assistant said he was sick.

His phone went directly to voicemail.

By noon, our internal audit found irregular payments.

Not millions.

Tens of millions.

Fake vendors.

Overpriced contracts.

Consulting fees.

Money leaving Carter Development and returning through private entities.

Thomas had been stealing for at least five years.

Vanessa became involved three years earlier.

Eric joined later.

Suddenly the family trust looked small compared to the corporate fraud.

Why target my mother?

Because one of the trust companies owned twenty-two percent of Carter Development.

If Vanessa gained legal influence over Margaret’s assets, Thomas could potentially shift voting power.

This wasn’t just theft.

It was an attempted takeover.

My marriage had been part of a business strategy.

That realization hurt in a way I wasn’t prepared for.

Had Vanessa ever loved me?

Or had every anniversary, every vacation, every whispered promise been part of gaining access?

I sat alone in my office staring at our wedding photograph.

Then Caleb entered.

“You okay?”

I quickly turned the frame facedown.

“Yeah.”

He looked at me the way children do when they know adults are lying.

“You’re bad at lying.”

Despite everything, I laughed.

“Apparently.”

He sat.

“Is Vanessa coming back?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“No.”

Relief crossed his face.

That mattered more than my broken heart.

I asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

He thought.

“Because you looked happy.”

That answer stayed with me.

My son had carried fear because he was trying to protect my happiness.

Children should never have to do that.

I moved closer.

“Caleb, you never protect me by hiding something that hurts you.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Then he asked:

“Are you mad at me?”

“For what?”

“For recording people.”

“No.”

“Grandma said sometimes proof matters.”

“She was right.”

He smiled slightly.

Then he handed me something.

“A flash drive?”

“It was in Vanessa’s desk.”

My stomach tightened.

“When did you take this?”

“Yesterday.”

“Caleb.”

“I know.”

He looked guilty.

“I shouldn’t snoop.”

“Correct.”

“But you probably want to see it.”

Unfortunately, he was right.

The drive contained photographs of documents.

Bank statements.

Passwords.

Emails.

Then one folder:

D.C. EXIT

My initials.

I opened it.

There was a life insurance policy on me.

$15 million.

Beneficiary:

Vanessa Carter.

That alone was normal enough.

Spouses often carry policies.

Except I had never seen this one.

Then came medical forms.

Private aviation schedules.

A list of medications.

And a note from Thomas:

Once voting control is secure, Daniel becomes unnecessary.

I stared at the screen.

Another message from Vanessa:

Don’t talk like that in writing.

Thomas:

Then stop pretending you still care about him.

Vanessa replied:

I care enough to want this clean.

My hands went cold.

Were they planning to kill me?

Or simply remove me from the company?

The final file answered part of that.

A draft resignation letter.

My signature forged.

A statement saying I was stepping away due to “mental and physical exhaustion.”

They planned to make me disappear from my own company without literally disappearing.

Maybe.

Then the last document opened.

A flight itinerary.

My upcoming private flight to Chicago.

Beside it:

Maintenance handled.

I called my security director immediately.

“Ground the jet.”

“Sir?”

“Do not let anyone touch it.”

May you like

“Why?”

“Because I think someone planned for it not to land.”
