Chapter 8 - VANESSA CAME HOME OLDER

Years passed.
Vanessa was released.
She moved into supervised transitional housing then small apartment.
No access to Carter accounts.
No company.
No family property.
She asked to see Mom.
Mom said no.
For almost a year.
Then yes.
Neutral mediator room.
I did not attend first half.
Mom told me later.
Vanessa said:
“I’m sorry I threw your cane.”
Mom:
“That is the easiest thing to apologize for.”
Vanessa cried.
Then:
“I’m sorry I drugged Robert.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry I waited to call.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry I forged your signature.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry I tried to make you leave your home.”
“Yes.”
Then Mom asked:
“Why did you hate me?”
Vanessa answered:
“Because you looked at me like you knew.”
Even blind.
Mom laughed.
“I did know some.”
Then:
“And because Daniel listened to you before we married.”
Vanessa felt second to mother.
After marriage, she wanted hierarchy shift.
When Dad died, Mom remained central.
Resentment.
Money pressure fused.
Then Mom said:
“You could have asked me for help.”
Vanessa looked shocked.
“I would have said no to lying. I might have helped with debt.”
There.
Options existed.
Then Vanessa asked:
“Do you forgive?”
Mom:
“Some things.”
Then:
“Will you ever trust me?”
“No.”
Simple.
Vanessa nodded.
“That is fair.”
Then Mom let her hug? Not yet.
No need.
Then I met Vanessa later.
Coffee.
Not home.
She looked older.
“Hi, Daniel.”
“Hi.”
Silence.
Then:
“Are you angry?”
“Yes.”
“Still love me?”
I hated question.
“Parts of me do.”
She cried.
“Me too.”
Then:
“That doesn’t mean we should be married.”
“I know.”
Good.
Then she asked about company.
I said stable.
Mom.
Painting.
She smiled.
“She always hated beige.”
True.
Then:
“Do you think your dad would hate me?”
I said:
“I don’t know.”
No comfort.
Then:
“I think he would want truth.”
She nodded.
Then she said:
“I’m glad death certificate changed.”
That surprised.
“Why?”
“Because I kept thinking if paper said natural, maybe I hadn’t really caused anything.”
There.
Official lie allowed denial.
Correcting record forced.
Then:
“I know now the delay mattered.”
I nodded.
Then we ended.
No reunion.
No secret romance.
Just closure-ish.
Then Vanessa maintained limited correspondence.
Mom eventually agreed one holiday card.
No house access.
May you like
Boundaries.
Then I started relationship with woman years later, but not central. Maybe later chapter.
