Chapter 4 - DANIEL LEARNED RICHARD PLANNED TO DESTROY HIM TOO

Daniel asked to hear the funeral recording.
His lawyer advised against.
He insisted.
Police played Richard’s words.
Once Daniel signs probate petition, we push him out too.
Daniel closed his eyes.
For the first time, the man who had planned my death looked betrayed.
I almost laughed.
Then stopped.
There was nothing funny.
Reyes later told me:
“People inside conspiracies often imagine loyalty lasts after usefulness.”
Yes.
Daniel had promised Sabrina a future.
Richard promised Daniel control.
Margaret trusted Richard.
Dr. Cole trusted money.
Nobody trusted anyone.
Then Daniel started talking.
Not confessing fully at first.
Minimizing.
He said Richard approached him nine months earlier after discovering my marriage was failing.
Daniel complained that our prenup left him “with nothing.”
Nothing.
He had a company worth millions.
A home.
Income.
But compared with my trust, nothing.
Richard said he could help.
First plan:
Provoke divorce.
Claim commingled assets.
Challenge prenup.
Too weak.
Second:
Make me appear mentally incompetent and obtain temporary financial authority.
Daniel started collecting therapy records? I wasn't in therapy perhaps. He fabricated concerns.
Then I discovered Sabrina.
Divorce became likely.
Richard escalated.
He said:
“If she dies while married, law becomes simpler.”
Daniel claimed he said no.
Messages later show:
I don’t want blood.
Richard:
Then stop pretending accidents are blood.
Daniel did not end relationship.
That was his moral crossing.
Even before brake sabotage.
He knew what Richard meant.
Then Daniel admitted he asked Richard for “certainty.”
He claimed he meant legal certainty.
Prosecutors would argue otherwise.
Then brake failure happened.
When he learned I survived, he panicked.
Richard pivoted to hospital plan.
They would declare me dead administratively before real status confirmed, then use forged documentation and attempt removal/cremation? That gets dangerous operational detail. We should avoid too much tactical detail. Keep high-level.
But hospital staff caught anomalies and police already involved.
My fake funeral became sting to draw out probate attempt and confessions.
Daniel did not know.
Then why open coffin?
Eleanor insisted funeral tradition.
We leveraged.
Then Daniel told something new.
Richard believed another Whitmore document existed.
A codicil.
If I died without children, certain trust shares reverted to Eleanor’s descendants.
Richard would inherit directly eventually.
Ah.
That was deeper motive.
He did not only want Daniel as proxy.
He wanted me dead because my death increased his own remainder interest.
But I had not known.
Then Eleanor said:
“That clause was revoked ten years ago.”
Richard did not know.
His murder plan based on outdated document.
Again.
Greed built on incomplete paperwork.
Current trust named charitable and employee beneficiaries for remainder if I died without descendants.
Richard received nothing.
The irony was brutal.
Then Eleanor asked:
“Why didn’t he know?”
Because she had removed him as advisor and never shared amendments.
Good governance accidentally protected.
Then Richard confronted with this.
He reportedly stared for full minute.
Then said:
“My mother cut me out.”
No.
His actions did.
But entitlement again.
Then Margaret flipped.
She agreed to testify against Richard.
Why?
She discovered he had another account.
And another woman.
Of course.
But more importantly, he planned to leave Margaret responsible for hospital fraud while fleeing.
Documents on laptop.
A draft statement blaming her.
She saw.
Conspiracy cannibalized itself.
She told police:
“Richard said Claire was spoiled and wouldn’t know what to do with that much money.”
Interesting.
He justified theft as correcting inheritance injustice.
He believed Eleanor favored my mother’s line.
Old sibling resentment.
My mother, Catherine, had died twelve years earlier.
Richard always believed Eleanor loved her more.
Maybe.
Then I remembered childhood.
Uncle Richard giving expensive gifts.
Jokes:
“Your grandmother would give you whole company if you asked.”
I thought teasing.
Maybe resentment.
Then Eleanor told me truth.
Catherine had been chosen as successor originally because Richard stole from family company at nineteen.
Grandfather covered it.
Another hidden scandal.
Again protection without consequence.
Richard spent life believing he had been unfairly excluded rather than repeatedly rescued.
The family had told softer story for decades.
Soft stories sometimes make dangerous people feel persecuted.
Then Eleanor said:
“I should have told truth earlier.”
Yes.
Not because exposure cures everything.
But secrecy distorted history.
Then prosecution set preliminary hearings.
Press exploded.
Headline:
WOMAN APPEARS ALIVE AT OWN FUNERAL IN ALLEGED INHERITANCE PLOT
I hated it.
Everyone wanted interview.
I refused.
Dad? no.
Eleanor handled statement.
“Claire is alive and recovering. Our family will cooperate fully.”
No drama.
Then Sabrina gave one interview against advice? Better no; she cooperates legally.
She sent me a letter.
I did not open at first.
Later.
I knew Daniel was married. I chose to participate in hurting you. I did not know he was trying to kill you, but I understand why that fact does not make me innocent.
Good.
No request forgiveness.
Then:
When I mocked grief at the funeral by standing beside him in red, I thought you were dead and still treated your death like my victory. I am ashamed.
That mattered.
I did not answer.
Not yet.
Then police recovered hospital bracelet scanner logs.
Who signed false death paperwork technically?
Dr. Cole.
But the authorization to release body status had secondary digital signature.
Daniel.
And the physical witness attestation?
Richard.
Three men.
One dead woman.
Except I had opened eyes.
That became prosecution image.
Then Detective Reyes told me something I never expected:
“We need you to decide whether you want to testify.”
I said:
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
Not revenge.
Because Daniel’s defense already hinted I staged everything to frame him.
The man who tried to make me dead was now going to argue I was too alive on purpose.
May you like
Fine.
I would tell the jury exactly what happened.
