Chapter 6 - WHAT THEY BURIED WITH GABRIELThe cemetery opened at sunrise.

Luca arrived before six.
He did not wait for permission.
Gabriel Costello’s grave lay beneath an elm tree beside their parents.
Three headstones.
Antonio.
Lucia.
Gabriel.
Luca had chosen Gabriel’s stone himself.
Beloved Son. Beloved Brother.
He stared at it from his wheelchair.
Marco stood beside him holding the brass key.
“What exactly are we looking for?”
“A vault.”
“In the grave?”
“Under the memorial base.”
Luca looked at him.
“You’ve known for twelve years.”
“Yes.”
“And said nothing.”
“Antonio told me to wait.”
“For what?”
Marco’s eyes moved to Luca’s legs.
“Until you could reach it yourself.”
Luca almost laughed.
“My father expected me to recover?”
“He hoped.”
“Then why didn’t he tell me?”
“He died before he could.”
Luca looked at Salazar.
The doctor stood several feet away.
Shame seemed permanently etched into him now.
“You told Antonio my paralysis was permanent?”
Salazar nodded.
“Yes.”
“Knowing it might not be.”
“Yes.”
Luca returned his attention to the grave.
Marco inserted the brass key beneath the stone edge.
A hidden panel opened.
Inside was a waterproof case.
Luca removed it.
Photographs.
Financial records.
A digital recorder.
And a sealed letter.
LUCA.
Another message from a dead man.
He opened it.
Brother,
If Marco gave you this, it means one of two things. Either Dominic is dead, or you finally know enough to understand why I lied to everyone.
Luca swallowed.
Gabriel continued.
Dominic believes I joined him.
I need him to believe that.
Dad knows part of the plan but not everything.
If I fail, look at Pier 19.
Luca stopped.
Pier 19 belonged to Costello Shipping.
One of their oldest docks.
Gabriel wrote:
The medical attack on you was not just about inheritance. Dominic needed control of Pier 19 without you inspecting it.
Maya’s childish observation returned.
Maybe because you could go somewhere if you walked.
She had been right.
Again.
Luca kept reading.
There is something under the pier that cannot survive public inspection.
Luca looked at Marco.
“What is under Pier 19?”
Marco shook his head.
“No idea.”
The letter continued.
If I die, assume my death was not enough to stop him.
Do not trust paperwork.
Do not trust the board.
And if Victor Salazar is still your doctor, ask him what happened at 2:17 a.m.
Luca turned toward Salazar.
The doctor went pale.
“What happened at 2:17?”
Salazar looked toward the cemetery entrance.
Luca’s voice sharpened.
“Victor.”
The doctor began crying.
“I signed it.”
“What?”
“The order.”
“What order?”
“To discontinue your antidote.”
Silence.
Luca stared.
“Antidote.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was poisoned that night.”
“Not initially.”
“But later.”
“Yes.”
“An antidote existed.”
“Yes.”
Luca’s hand shook.
“Would it have prevented this?”
Salazar closed his eyes.
“Possibly.”
Luca wanted to kill him.
The desire arrived calmly.
That frightened him more than anger.
Maya’s voice entered his mind.
He’s scared.
For the first time in twelve years, Luca recognized another truth.
Destroying Salazar would not return a single day.
He looked at the doctor.
“Why 2:17?”
“That’s when Dominic came into your room.”
“My father?”
“Had gone to see Gabriel.”
“My brother?”
“Already knew something was wrong.”
“What did Dominic say?”
Salazar swallowed.
“He told me your poisoning was accidental.”
“And you believed him?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“He showed me photographs of my wife.”
Luca closed his eyes.
The same weapon.
Fear.
Always fear.
Salazar continued.
“He said if I stopped treatment, she lived.”
“You chose her.”
“Yes.”
“And chose for me.”
“Yes.”
Luca looked at the grave.
“I understand choosing someone you love.”
Salazar looked up, surprised.
Luca’s expression hardened.
“I do not forgive you.”
The distinction mattered.
They drove directly to Pier 19.
The dock stretched into gray river water.
Cargo warehouses towered nearby.
Nothing unusual.
Luca had inspected the business from boardrooms for years.
Reports.
Photos.
Video feeds.
Never physically.
Marco found a service hatch beneath Warehouse C.
Stairs.
Again.
Always stairs.
Luca stood.
This time the climb down took less effort.
His body was changing rapidly without the drugs.
His right leg remained weaker.
His balance terrible.
But he moved.
At the bottom, they found a steel corridor beneath the pier.
Not on any building plan.
The first room was empty.
The second contained old crates.
The third contained hospital equipment.
Luca stopped.
Beds.
IV poles.
Medical monitors.
Expired medications.
Salazar whispered, “What the hell?”
Marco opened a cabinet.
Patient wristbands.
Hundreds.
Luca picked one up.
No names.
Numbers.
A date from nine years earlier.
“What happened here?”
Nobody answered.
A door at the end had electronic locks.
Gabriel’s key opened it.
Inside were filing cabinets.
Luca opened one.
Medical records.
People.
Some listed as dead.
Some missing.
Some transferred.
Elena whispered when she saw one name.
“My mother.”
Luca turned.
“What?”
She pulled a folder.
MARGARET MERCER.
Status: deceased.
But inside was a discharge date two years after her supposed death.
Elena’s face collapsed.
“My mother died six years ago.”
Luca looked at the record.
Apparently not when Elena believed.
“What is this place?”
Salazar opened another file.
His expression became horror.
“These were induced conditions.”
“What?”
“Comas. Neuromuscular suppression. Memory impairment.”
Luca stared.
Human beings made helpless.
Like him.
Dominic had not invented the method for Luca.
Luca may have been one experiment among many.
Marco found a video system.
Old archives remained.
He opened one.
A room appeared.
Bed.
Patient.
Luca.
Twelve years younger.
Unconscious.
Luca gripped the desk.
The timestamp.
2:17 a.m.
Dominic entered.
Salazar followed.
Another person came behind them.
Rebecca.
Then Gabriel.
Luca stared.
His brother.
Gabriel argued with Dominic.
No sound.
He moved toward Luca.
Dominic blocked him.
Gabriel punched him.
Security entered.
The video skipped.
When it resumed, Gabriel was gone.
Dominic leaned over Luca.
Then did something.
Placed a small object beneath the hospital pillow.
“What?”
Marco zoomed.
A recorder.
Audio.
They searched the archive.
Corresponding file.
2:17 AUDIO.
Luca pressed play.
Dominic’s voice.
“Victor, stop the antidote.”
Salazar: “He could remain disabled.”
Dominic: “That’s the point.”
Rebecca: “Antonio will know.”
Dominic: “Not if Gabriel handles him.”
Then Gabriel’s voice.
“You touch Luca again and I burn everything.”
Dominic laughed.
“You think you’re the good brother now?”
Gabriel: “I think I know where the bodies are.”
Dominic: “So do I. Most of them have your family name attached.”
The audio continued.
Gabriel: “Pier 19 ends tonight.”
Dominic: “Then Luca dies tonight.”
Silence.
Gabriel: “You need Luca.”
Dominic: “For now.”
Gabriel: “Then keep him alive.”
Dominic: “Why do you care?”
Gabriel answered.
“Because he’s the only Costello left who might fix what we became.”
Luca stopped the audio.
His eyes burned.
Gabriel had bought his life.
Not his freedom.
But his life.
With silence.
With pretending to join Dominic.
With everything.
Elena opened another drawer.
“Luca.”
He turned.
A file.
MAYA HARPER.
He froze.
Elena grabbed it.
“No.”
The folder contained photographs of Maya.
School.
Playground.
Apartment.
Dates beginning two years earlier.
Before Elena ever worked for Luca.
“What the hell?”
Elena whispered.
Luca looked through the pages.
Behavioral notes.
High observational intelligence.
Pattern recognition.
Maternal connection: Margaret Mercer.
Candidate for monitoring.
Maya’s grandmother.
The nurse.
Dominic had watched Maya because of her grandmother.
Not because Maya entered Luca’s garden.
That had not been an accident.
Luca looked at Elena.
“How did you get the job at my house?”
“Agency.”
“Who recommended the agency?”
Elena went still.
She knew.
“My mother’s old attorney.”
“Name?”
“Rebecca Crane.”
The room went cold.
Elena covered her mouth.
“They placed us there.”
Luca stared.
Maya’s arrival.
The fence.
The baseball field.
Her observation.
Had any of it been random?
Then he found one final page.
OBJECTIVE: DETERMINE WHETHER SUBJECT LUCA COSTELLO SHOWS NEUROLOGICAL RECOVERY WHEN EXPOSED TO UNCONTROLLED ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULI.
Luca read it twice.
“They wanted Maya to notice.”
Marco frowned.
“Why?”
A voice came from the doorway.
“Because children tell the truth before adults can stop them.”
Dominic Costello stood there.
Gun in hand.
Behind him were six armed men.
He smiled at Luca.
“You finally made it to Pier 19.”
Luca stared.
Dominic looked toward his legs.
“And you walked down the stairs.”
May you like
His smile widened.
“Exactly as planned.”
