Chapter 10: The Truth in the Vault
Maya stared at the second phone.
The live video showed the pool from above.
Every movement.
Every face.
Every whispered conversation.
Someone had been watching them the entire night.
Marcus slowly turned toward the device.
“Maya, don't touch it.””
She stepped away from him.
“Why?””
“I don't know who's controlling it.””
“You know something.””
“I know we need to leave.””
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“Now you want to leave?””
Marcus ignored him.
He looked at Maya.
“Your father warned you not to trust me because he knew I would be the one taking you to the vault.””
“Why?””
“Because I was the only person who knew where it was.””
Maya's eyes narrowed.
“And you weren't going to tell me?””
“I was waiting for the right time.””
“After I turned thirty?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because your father wanted you to make the choice yourself.””
Maya shook her head.
“My father is supposedly dead.””
Marcus's expression changed.
“No.””
“What?””
“He isn't.””
The words landed harder than anything else that night.
Marcus walked toward the mansion.
Maya followed.
“Then where is he?””
“In the vault.””
She stopped.
“What?””
Marcus turned.
“Your father didn't hide the company documents in a bank. He built a private medical facility beneath the estate.””
Maya stared at him.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It does when you understand what happened.””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Your father discovered someone inside his company was selling proprietary technology. When he tried to expose them, they came after him.””
“Mr. Collins?””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
“Daniel was being used.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“I wasn't.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You were.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My father lost everything because of yours.””
“Your father was framed.””
Daniel froze.
Marcus continued.
“Your father's company wasn't bankrupt because of Maya's father. Collins manipulated the records and made it look that way.””
Daniel's face collapsed.
“You're lying.””
“Then ask him.””
Marcus pointed at the live phone.
“Whoever is watching us already knows the truth.””
The phone screen suddenly changed.
A video appeared.
Maya's father sat in a hospital bed.
His face was bruised, but his eyes were clear.
“Maya,” he said.
She stepped closer.
Her hand covered her mouth.
“Dad…”
The recording continued.
“If you're seeing this, Collins has already found out about the vault.””
Maya's eyes filled with tears.
“I knew he wasn't dead.””
Vanessa began crying behind her.
Her father continued.
“I need you to understand something. Vanessa did betray you.””
Maya closed her eyes.
Vanessa lowered her head.
“But she did not betray you because she wanted you dead.””
Maya looked at her sister.
Vanessa whispered, “I'm sorry.””
The recording continued.
“She was threatened because she discovered the truth.””
Maya's eyes moved to Vanessa.
“You knew?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I found documents in Daniel's office.””
Daniel looked stunned.
“What documents?””
“Transfers. Payments. Messages.””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“I tried to confront Collins.””
Maya whispered, “And he threatened you.””
“Yes.””
Her father continued.
“Collins believed Vanessa would kill Maya for the inheritance. He was wrong.””
Maya looked toward the screen.
“Where are you?””
The recording answered as though he could hear her.
“I am alive.””
She began crying.
“But I am sick, and I may not have much time.””
Marcus looked away.
Maya stared at him.
“You knew.””
“I knew he survived.””
“You knew he was alive this whole time.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me think he was dead?””
“Your father believed it was the only way to keep you safe.””
Maya's voice shook.
“You should have told me.””
“I wanted to.””
“Then why didn't you?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Because Collins was watching me too.””
The video changed.
A document appeared.
At the top was the name *EDWARD COLLINS*.
Underneath were financial transfers, shell companies, and payments to several people.
Maya recognized one name.
Daniel.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“No.””
Another name appeared.
Vanessa.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Maya looked at her.
“What is that?””
“I never took his money.””
Marcus pointed at the date.
“Those transfers were fabricated.””
Daniel looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because I helped your father prove it.””
Daniel went silent.
Maya finally understood.
Marcus had never been working against her.
He had been building a case.
Her father had hidden the evidence until Maya could legally inherit the company.
Then the final page appeared.
A photograph.
Mr. Collins.
Standing beside the pool.
Taken earlier that afternoon.
Maya's blood went cold.
“He was here.””
Marcus nodded.
“That's why the camera was installed.””
A voice came from behind them.
“You're finally putting it together.””
Everyone turned.
The silver-dressed woman stood near the mansion doors.
She was holding a gun.
Maya froze.
The woman looked at Marcus.
“Your father told me you would figure it out.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You're Collins's daughter.””
She smiled.
“Finally.””
Vanessa gasped.
“You're the one who threatened me.””
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped backward.
“You used all of us.””
“I used what your greed gave me.””
She looked at Maya.
“Your father ruined my family.””
Maya stared at her.
“He exposed criminals.””
“He destroyed my father.””
“No,” Maya said.
“Your father destroyed himself.””
The woman raised the gun.
Marcus stepped in front of Maya.
“Don't.””
The woman smiled.
“You always did protect her.””
A siren sounded outside.
Then another.
The woman looked toward the driveway.
Marcus smiled.
“You forgot something.””
“What?””
“The live feed.””
Her face changed.
“Every second you've spent threatening us has been recorded.””
The mansion doors burst open.
Police officers rushed inside.
The woman dropped the weapon.
Vanessa collapsed into a chair.
Daniel sank against the wall.
Maya stood completely still.
Then she heard a voice behind her.
“Maya.””
She turned.
A stretcher was being pushed slowly through the doorway.
On it was an older man.
Bruised.
Pale.
Alive.
Her father.
Maya ran to him.
“Dad?””
His eyes opened.
A weak smile crossed his face.
“You grew up.””
Maya dropped beside him, crying.
“You let me think you were dead.””
“I had to.””
“You should have trusted me.””
He reached for her hand.
“I should have.””
Marcus stood several feet away.
Maya looked at him.
Then at Vanessa.
Her sister approached slowly.
“I don't expect you to forgive me.””
Maya looked at the pool.
At the ruined champagne-colored dress.
At the phone still recording on the table.
Then she looked back at Vanessa.
“I don't forgive you yet.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I understand.””
“But you told the truth.””
Vanessa began crying again.
Maya took her hand.
“That's where we start.””
Her father watched them.
Then he looked at Marcus.
Marcus nodded.
The police led the woman away.
Daniel followed, stunned and silent.
As the mansion finally emptied, the sunset disappeared beyond the horizon.
The pool became dark.
Maya looked at the water where she had nearly died.
Then at the people who had lied to her.
For one terrible night, she had believed her sister wanted her dead.
The truth was worse.
Her sister had betrayed her.
But she had also been trying to survive.
And the man Maya thought she couldn't trust had spent months protecting her from the people who actually wanted her gone.
Her father squeezed her hand.
“There is one more thing.””
Maya looked down.
“What?””
He smiled faintly.
“The company isn't yours because you turned thirty.””
Maya frowned.
“Then why?””
“Because you earned it.””
He looked toward the pool.
“I changed the trust years ago.””
Maya stared.
“What does that mean?””
Her father smiled.
“It means you were never supposed to inherit my empire.””
He took a breath.
“You were supposed to decide whether to destroy it.””
Maya looked toward the mansion.
Toward the vault.
Toward the evidence that had nearly cost her everything.
Then she finally understood the real reason her father had left her the choice.
He hadn't been testing whether she could survive betrayal.
He had been testing whether, after surviving it, she would become the kind of person who caused it.
Maya squeezed his hand.
“No more secrets.””
Her father nodded.
May you like
“No more secrets.””
And for the first time that night, Maya believed him.
