Chapter 2: The Locked Pantry

I reached for my phone.

Vanessa immediately changed her tone.

"Michael, put that away. We can talk about this like adults.""

"Then start telling me the truth.""

"I am telling you the truth.""

"Why is there a lock on the pantry?""

"Because the children keep making messes.""

I glanced at the dining table. Mason's plate was still untouched, and Lily was watching the dinner roll near the edge as if she wanted to pick it up but didn't dare.

"Making messes doesn't explain why my daughter hasn't eaten since breakfast.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You're tired. You just got home from work, and you're overreacting.""

"Maybe. So let's make this simple. Unlock the pantry.""

"No.""

The answer came too quickly.

I lowered my phone.

"What did you say?""

"I said no. You don't get to walk into my house and start giving orders because Lily told you some ridiculous story.""

I stared at her.

"My house?""

She lifted her chin.

"Someone has to maintain order around here. You work all day, and I'm the one who deals with their behavior.""

"By starving a five-year-old?""

"I never said I was starving her!""

"Then unlock the door.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Mason pushed his chair back.

The legs scraped across the floor, making Vanessa turn sharply.

"Sit down," she ordered.

He remained standing.

"Mason," she said again, her voice colder now.

"Sit. Down.""

The boy's face had gone pale, but he looked at me.

"Dad?""

I'd never heard him call me that with so much fear in his voice.

"I'm here, buddy.""

He took a breath.

"She makes Lily stand in the corner when she asks for food.""

Vanessa rounded on him.

"You're a liar!""

Mason recoiled.

I stepped between them again.

"Don't you dare speak to him like that.""

"He is repeating things he doesn't understand!""

"Then explain them.""

Vanessa pointed at Lily.

"That child cries over everything. She refuses to follow instructions, she touches things that don't belong to her, and she throws tantrums whenever I tell her no.""

Lily's shoulders began to shake.

"I didn't touch anything," she whispered.

Vanessa ignored her.

"I have spent months trying to teach her discipline, Michael. Months. You come home for a few hours, play the hero, and then leave me to clean up the mess.""

I could feel my hands trembling.

I wanted answers. I wanted to understand how long this had been happening, and why I hadn't seen it.

But my daughter was still standing behind me, hungry and frightened, and the pantry door was still locked.

I dialed emergency services.

Vanessa lunged toward my phone.

"Don't you dare call the police!""

I pulled it away.

"Then give me one good reason why I shouldn't.""

She stopped.

Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.

That silence told me more than her shouting had.

I gave the dispatcher our address and explained that my young daughter had been struck and that I suspected ongoing abuse. I asked for officers to come immediately.

Vanessa began pacing.

"You have destroyed this family over a misunderstanding.""

"No," I said.

"I'm trying to find out what you've done to it.""

She pointed a shaking finger at me.

"If you bring police into this house, you'll regret it.""

I looked at her.

"That's a threat?""

"It's a warning. You have no idea what you've started.""

Before I could respond, Mason grabbed the sleeve of my work shirt.

His fingers were cold.

"Dad," he whispered, "check the closet first.""

I turned toward him.

"What closet?""

He pointed down the hallway.

"The one beside my room.""

Vanessa went completely still.

It lasted only a second, but I saw it. Her shoulders tightened. Her eyes darted toward the hallway, then back toward me.

"Mason," she said, forcing a smile that didn't reach her eyes, "go to your room.""

He shook his head.

"Please don't make me.""

The words seemed to drain the color from her face.

I crouched beside him.

"Buddy, why do you want me to check that closet?""

He looked at Lily.

She had begun crying silently, her small hands pressed against her mouth.

Mason leaned closer to me.

"Because that's where she puts Lily when she cries.""

For a moment, the dining room seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

I turned toward Vanessa.

She shook her head rapidly.

"He's confused. He's talking about a normal punishment. Every parent uses time-outs.""

"With a lock on the outside?""

Her silence returned.

I moved toward the hallway.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

"Michael, stop!""

I pulled free.

"Get away from me.""

She stumbled backward, catching herself against the dining table. A glass toppled over and shattered on the floor.

Neither of us looked down.

I hurried past the living room and reached the narrow closet beside Mason's bedroom.

The door was closed.

I tried the handle.

Locked.

A metal bolt had been installed on the outside.

I stared at it, unable to process what I was seeing.

Behind me, Mason began to cry.

"Dad, I told her I would keep the secret if she stopped doing it.""

I looked back at him.

"What secret, son?""

He wiped his cheeks with both hands.

"The videos.""

Vanessa screamed from the dining room.

"DO NOT OPEN THAT DOOR!""

May you like

I turned back toward the closet.

And with one hand on the bolt, I realized my son was about to show me something that could destroy everything I thought I knew about my wife.
