Chapter 6: The Boy Who Heard The Truth
The first thing I did was run to the window.
Not think.
Not scream.
Run.
The cold air hit my face as I pushed the curtains aside and looked outside.
Nothing.
Only darkness.
The backyard was empty.
The old wooden fence stood exactly where it had always stood.
The trees moved slightly in the wind.
But whoever had been here was gone.
My hands shook as I turned back around.
“Noah?””
My voice cracked.
“Noah!””
The room was empty.
The bed was untouched.
The stuffed dinosaur he slept with every night was sitting perfectly against the pillow.
But my son was gone.
“Pascal!””
My scream brought everyone upstairs.
He reached the doorway first.
One look at my face, and he knew.
“What happened?””
I couldn’t speak.
I pointed.
The note was still in my hand.
Then I looked at the empty bed.
“Noah is gone.””
The color disappeared from Pascal’s face.
“What?””
Claire covered her mouth.
“No…”
Pascal moved immediately.
He checked the closet.
The bathroom.
The hallway.
Everywhere.
But there was no sign of him.
Then I saw something on the floor.
A small object.
A black thread bracelet.
Noah’s bracelet.
He never took it off.
I picked it up.
My knees almost gave out.
“He was here.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
“He was here.””
Pascal crouched beside me.
“Alexa, listen to me.””
I looked at him.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Panic.
Real panic.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Fear.
“What do we do?””
The question came from me before I could stop it.
And for a second, Pascal looked shocked.
Because after everything.
After all the lies.
After all the secrets.
He realized I was still looking at him for help.
His expression softened.
“We find him.””
Then his phone rang.
All of us froze.
Pascal looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
My heart dropped.
“Answer it.””
He hesitated.
“Alexa—”
“Answer it.””
He did.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a voice.
A child’s voice.
“Dad?””
Pascal’s face changed.
My heart broke.
Because it wasn’t his child calling.
It was mine.
“Noah?””
Pascal put the phone on speaker.
“Mom?””
I grabbed the phone.
“Noah! Where are you?””
My son’s breathing was shaky.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words destroyed me.
“Baby, don’t apologize. Tell me where you are.””
“I didn’t mean to hear.””
I froze.
“Hear what?””
Silence.
Then Noah whispered:
“Everything.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who are you with?””
No answer.
“Noah, listen to me. I need you to tell me where you are.””
“I’m not supposed to.””
My voice broke.
“Who told you that?””
A pause.
Then:
“Grandpa.””
The room went silent.
My father.
My dead father.
My missing father.
My entire past suddenly standing in front of me.
“Where is he?””
Noah started crying.
“He said you would be angry.””
I closed my eyes.
“No, sweetheart. I’m not angry at you.””
“He said you would hate him.””
I swallowed.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
Then a sound.
A door closing.
A man’s voice in the background.
“Give me the phone.””
My blood froze.
My father.
I knew that voice.
“Dad.””
Silence.
Then:
“Alexa.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Where is my son?””
“He’s safe.””
“Bring him home.””
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You don’t get to disappear for years, change my child’s records, and take him from me while telling me I don’t understand.””
A long silence.
Then my father said something I never expected.
“I did it because I was trying to save him.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Where are you?””
“Not yet.””
My anger exploded.
“Not yet?””
“You need to know what Ethan did.””
I looked at Pascal.
Then at Claire.
“I’m done hearing about what Ethan did.””
“No, you’re not.””
My father’s voice became darker.
“Because the truth is worse than you think.””
“What truth?””
A pause.
Then:
“Ask Ethan why Noah’s first birthday was the day he disappeared.””
I froze.
“What?””
My father continued.
“Ask him why he wasn’t there.””
I looked at Pascal.
He looked away.
Again.
Always away.
My father noticed.
“You see?””
His voice softened.
“Even now, Pascal won’t tell you.””
I clenched my jaw.
“You don’t know my husband.””
“I know him better than you do.””
The call ended.
I stood there holding the phone.
My son’s voice.
My father’s voice.
Both gone.
Again.
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
The house that had always felt like home suddenly became a crime scene.
Officers walked through Noah’s room.
They photographed the window.
They searched the backyard.
Every movement felt unreal.
I sat on the stairs, staring at the floor.
My entire life felt like a puzzle someone else had been putting together without me.
Claire sat beside me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For not telling you sooner.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone was sorry.
Everyone.
“Why didn’t you?””
She looked down.
“Because Ethan asked me not to.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“He thought if you knew everything, you would be in danger.””
“From who?””
Claire hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your father.””
I looked away.
“Everyone keeps blaming my father.””
“Because he did terrible things.””
“But everyone also knew.””
Claire didn’t argue.
That hurt more.
“You all watched me live a lie.””
“I know.””
“No. You don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your husband, your ex, and your own father all knew things about your child that you didn’t.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
I looked at her.
She took a breath.
“Because I helped hide one of those things.””
The confession stunned me.
“What?””
Claire reached into her bag.
She pulled out another folder.
“I was there when the original birth records were changed.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
“Because I was threatened.””
“By my father?””
She nodded.
“He had connections. Money. Influence.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
Claire looked at the folder.
“After Ethan disappeared.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Old.
Folded.
My name written on the front.
My hands trembled.
“Who is this from?””
Claire looked at me.
“Ethan.””
I opened it.
The paper was worn.
The handwriting was his.
Alexa,
If you’re reading this, it means I failed to protect you.
I stopped breathing.
The room disappeared.
I kept reading.
I wanted to tell you everything.
About Pascal.
About your father.
About Noah.
But every time I tried, someone got closer to hurting you.
I looked down.
My vision blurred.
The next line made my heart stop.
The reason I left wasn’t because I stopped loving you.
It was because I found out the truth about Noah.
I turned the page.
But the bottom half was missing.
Someone had torn it away.
I looked at Claire.
“Where is the rest?””
Her face went pale.
“I don’t know.””
A police officer approached.
“Ms. Morgan?””
I looked up.
“Yes?””
“We found something outside.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
He held a small plastic evidence bag.
Inside was a torn piece of paper.
A piece of the letter.
I took it.
The missing words were written there.
My hands shook as I read them.
*Noah’s real father is not who you think.*
Then below:
*And Pascal knows why.*
I looked toward the living room.
Pascal was standing there.
Watching me.
And this time, he didn’t deny it.
He just whispered:
“I was going to tell you tonight.””
I stared at him.
“Tell me what?””
His face collapsed.
“The truth about Noah’s father.””
The officer looked between us.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Because before anyone could speak, Pascal’s phone buzzed.
A new message.
He looked at it.
Then his entire body went still.
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He slowly handed me the phone.
One photo.
One sentence.
The picture was of Noah.
Standing beside my father.
May you like
And the message said:
*Ask Alexa why she forgot the day her son was born.*
