Chapter 9: The Truth Amara Hid

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because there was too much.

The silence felt heavier than any argument.

I looked at Amara.

My sister.

The person I had spent fifteen years grieving.

The person who had finally come back.

And somehow, after everything, I still felt like she was keeping something from me.

“Amara.””

She didn’t answer.

Her eyes were fixed on the floor.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, she did.

And I knew.

Before she even spoke.

She knew exactly what Daniel meant.

“You lied to me.””

The words came out quietly.

But they hurt more than yelling.

Amara’s face crumpled.

“I didn’t want to.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“Nia—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I spent fifteen years thinking I lost you. Then I find out you were alive. I find out Dad was hiding things. I find out Marcus knew.””

My voice shook.

“And now I find out you still haven’t told me everything.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

That sentence.

The sentence that had followed me all night.

“I’m done hearing that.””

Everyone became silent.

“I don’t need protection from the truth.””

Amara looked at Eli.

Then back at me.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I was afraid.””

“Of Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because Daniel didn’t just destroy my life.””

A pause.

“He destroyed someone else’s.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

She looked at my mother.

My mother looked away.

My heart sank.

“What happened after Dad died?””

Amara sat down.

Her hands trembled.

“I thought the worst was over.””

She looked at Marcus.

“I thought once Dad was gone, Daniel would stop.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

Amara’s voice became softer.

“He wanted something.””

“What?””

“The documents.””

The file.

The one everyone had been chasing.

“What was in them?””

Amara looked at me.

“Proof that Daniel was the one controlling the hidden companies.””

I stared.

“Not Dad?””

“Dad knew.””

She paused.

“But Daniel created them.””

The room became cold.

“My father knew someone was stealing from him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he stop him?””

Amara looked down.

“Because Daniel had leverage.””

“What kind of leverage?””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother whispered:

“Me.””

I turned.

“Mom?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your father knew.””

“Knew what?””

She looked at Amara.

Then at me.

“That Daniel was my son.””

The world stopped.

I couldn’t understand the words.

“What?””

Nobody moved.

My mother covered her mouth.

“I was young.””

My voice was barely there.

“Daniel is your son?””

She nodded.

A lifetime of secrets collapsed in one second.

“How?””

My mother sat down.

“Before I met your father, there was someone else.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

“Daniel’s father.””

The room was silent.

“I was nineteen.””

My mother looked ashamed.

“I had Daniel. I was scared. I had no money. No family support.””

“What happened?””

“He was taken away.””

“Taken?””

She nodded.

“His father’s family convinced me I couldn’t raise him. They promised he would have a better life.””

Her voice broke.

“I believed them.””

“And then?””

“Years later, after I married your father, Daniel came back.””

I felt sick.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

My mother wiped her tears.

“He knew I was his mother.””

“And Dad?””

“He found out.””

I looked at the floor.

Everything connected.

Daniel’s access.

The business.

The secrets.

The revenge.

“Why did he hate us?””

Amara answered.

“Because he believed your father stole the family that should have been his.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because Daniel didn’t want forgiveness.””

Amara’s voice became colder.

“He wanted everything your father had.””

The company.

The name.

The power.

The Carter legacy.

I looked at Marcus.

“And you knew?””

He nodded.

“I discovered Daniel’s connection years ago.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t have proof.””

I laughed softly.

“Everyone always needs proof.””

I looked at the notebook.

“The truth was sitting here.””

Nobody answered.

I turned back to Amara.

“What did Daniel do after Dad died?””

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“He made a deal.””

“With who?””

“With me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He said if I disappeared, he would leave you alone.””

My anger disappeared.

“You made a deal with him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he threatened you.””

The room went silent.

“What did he threaten?””

Amara looked at me.

“He said he would destroy everything you loved.””

I swallowed.

“And you believed him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he already had.””

Her voice broke.

“He had access to our family accounts. He had information. He had people everywhere.””

She touched Eli’s hand.

“I wasn’t protecting myself.””

“I was protecting him.””

I looked at Eli.

My nephew.

A child who had spent his life running.

I finally understood.

Amara wasn’t hiding because she wanted to.

She was hiding because she thought she had no choice.

But one question remained.

“The night Dad died…”

Everyone went quiet.

“What really happened?””

Amara looked at Marcus.

Then at my mother.

Then at me.

“He didn’t die from the crash.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“The crash happened because Daniel wanted it to.””

Marcus nodded.

“I suspected.””

Amara continued.

“Daniel followed us.””

“Why?””

“Because he thought we had the documents.””

“Did you?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

My breath caught.

“You had the file?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

She looked at me.

“I hid it.””

“Where?””

“In the one place Daniel would never search.””

I waited.

“Where?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“At our old house.””

I frowned.

“The Carter house?””

She nodded.

“The place where we grew up.””

I shook my head.

“That house was sold.””

“No.””

My mother looked at me.

“It wasn’t.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“Your father never sold it.””

“Then who lives there?””

Nobody answered.

The fear returned.

The same fear that had followed every secret.

Amara reached into her bag.

She pulled out another photograph.

An old one.

The house.

Our house.

And someone standing outside.

I looked closer.

My breath stopped.

Because the person in the picture was Daniel Cross.

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.

*He has been waiting there for fifteen years.*

A sound came from outside.

A car engine.

Then another.

Marcus moved toward the window.

His face changed.

“We have to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He pointed outside.

Three black cars had stopped in front of the building.

Doors opened.

Men stepped out.

Amara grabbed Eli.

“Nia, listen to me.””

“What?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“If Daniel is here…”

A loud knock interrupted her.

Once.

Twice.

Then a voice came through the door.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

“Open the door, Nia.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel.

My hand tightened.

The voice continued.

“I think it’s time we talked about your father.””

The door handle slowly turned.

And then he said:

“After all…”

May you like

A pause.

“I was there when he died.””
