Chapter 7: The Voice From the Past

The phone slipped from my hand.

It hit the floor.

The sound was small.

Almost nothing.

But everyone heard it.

Because nobody in the diner moved.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

They were all waiting for me to say something.

Waiting for me to explain how a man who had been dead for fifteen years had just called my phone.

But I couldn’t.

My mind was stuck on one sentence.

You cannot trust Liam Henderson.

The words kept repeating.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Liam stared at me.

Not angrily.

Not defensively.

Just silently.

Like he already knew what I was thinking.

“Clara.””

I looked at him.

His name felt different now.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

“You heard him.””

Liam’s expression didn’t change.

“Yes.””

“You heard everything?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

Again.

I hated that he never lied.

Because it made trusting him harder.

I picked up my phone.

The screen was still lit.

Unknown number.

No record.

No way to call back.

My hands shook.

“My father is alive.””

Nobody disagreed.

That terrified me.

If this was impossible, someone would have said so.

But everyone looked like they had been waiting for this moment.

Marcus slowly sat down.

“He finally contacted you.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew this could happen?””

Marcus looked away.

“I hoped it wouldn’t.””

My anger exploded.

“You all knew?””

The bikers lowered their eyes.

Nobody answered.

“You knew there was a chance my father was alive?””

Liam stepped forward.

“Clara.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t get to say my name like that.””

His face tightened.

“Fair.””

The word surprised me.

Because Liam Henderson didn’t seem like a man who admitted mistakes.

But he did.

“I should have told you more.””

“Yes.””

“You’re right.””

I looked at him.

“You knew where the ledger was.””

He didn’t answer.

“You knew my father might contact me.””

Silence.

“You knew he trusted you.””

Another silence.

I laughed softly.

“You knew everything.””

“No.””

His voice became firmer.

“I knew pieces.””

“Pieces?””

I pointed at the phone.

“My father just told me to run from you.””

Something flashed across Liam’s face.

Pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

And somehow that bothered me more.

“Did he tell you why?”” Liam asked.

I froze.

“No.””

“Did he explain?””

“No.””

“Then you don’t know what he meant.””

I stared at him.

“You’re saying my father was wrong?””

“No.””

Liam looked down.

“I’m saying Daniel had reasons to be afraid.””

The room became quiet.

“Afraid of who?””

Liam didn’t answer.

That was becoming the most terrifying pattern of the night.

I turned toward Victor.

He was watching all of us.

Enjoying it.

“You know something.””

Victor smiled.

“Everyone knows something.””

I walked toward him.

“You were my father’s friend.””

“Yes.””

“You lied at his funeral.””

His smile disappeared.

“I protected your family.””

“You told us he abandoned us.””

“I told you what Daniel wanted people to believe.””

I stopped.

“What?””

Victor sighed.

“Your father needed everyone to think he was gone.””

“Why?””

“Because if people believed he was dead, they stopped looking.””

My heart raced.

“Looking for what?””

Victor looked at Liam.

“The ledger.””

The word hung there.

Again.

Always the ledger.

I turned back.

“What is in it?””

Liam answered this time.

“Names.””

“Whose names?””

“People who betrayed the club.””

Victor laughed.

“That’s not all.””

Liam’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t.””

Victor ignored him.

“The ledger contains records of money, deals, and people who used the Iron Wolves for their own purposes.””

My stomach twisted.

“And my father had it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he was going to expose them.””

I looked at Liam.

“Then why did my father tell me not to trust you?””

Liam didn’t move.

Finally, he said:

“Because he blamed me.””

The answer was quiet.

Too quiet.

I waited.

He continued.

“Daniel knew I made mistakes.””

“What mistakes?””

Liam looked at the floor.

“When I was younger, I trusted the wrong people.””

“Who?””

“Victor.””

Everyone looked at him.

Victor’s smile faded.

Liam continued.

“I thought Victor wanted to protect the club.””

“And?””

“He wanted power.””

The rain outside grew heavier.

“I helped him gain influence.””

My chest tightened.

“How?””

Liam looked at me.

“I gave him information.””

The room went silent.

“You betrayed my father.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Liam didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because you deserve the truth.””

I shook my head.

“No. You’re telling me because I already know enough to hate you.””

His expression broke slightly.

Maybe that was cruel.

Maybe it wasn’t.

I didn’t know anymore.

Liam looked at the jacket hanging over the chair.

“Daniel saved me from becoming someone worse.””

He touched the leather.

“And I spent years trying to repay him.””

I looked at the jacket.

The same jacket that connected all of us.

“My father gave you that because he trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“Then why warn me about you?””

Liam was silent.

For a long time.

Then he said:

“Because Daniel knew I was capable of hurting people.””

The answer shocked me.

“You mean you hurt him?””

“No.””

His eyes met mine.

“But I hurt people trying to protect him.””

A loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

The lights flickered.

Then went out.

Again.

This time, nobody panicked.

Everyone moved.

Quickly.

Professionally.

Like they had done this before.

Liam grabbed my arm.

“Behind me.””

I pulled away.

“Don’t.””

His eyes found mine.

“Clara.””

“I don’t know if I should trust you.””

His expression changed.

“I know.””

The fact that he accepted it hurt.

A moment later, a flashlight moved across the broken front window.

Someone was outside.

Not Victor.

Not his men.

Someone else.

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

“That’s impossible.””

Liam looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I know that vehicle.””

A black SUV stopped outside.

The door opened.

One person stepped out.

Everyone went completely still.

Even Liam.

I watched his face.

And I knew immediately.

Whoever had arrived was someone he feared.

The person entered slowly.

No weapon.

No guards.

Just a calm expression.

A woman.

Older.

Maybe in her fifties.

Her eyes scanned the room.

Then stopped on me.

She looked like she had seen a ghost.

“Clara Hart.””

My heart pounded.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at Liam.

Then at the jacket.

Then back at me.

“I’m the person your father trusted before he trusted anyone else.””

Nobody spoke.

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a photograph.

She handed it to me.

My fingers shook as I took it.

The picture showed my father.

But not alone.

Standing beside him was the woman in front of me.

And beside them…

Was a little girl.

Me.

But I had never seen the picture before.

I looked up.

“How do you have this?””

The woman’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because I was there the night your father disappeared.””

I swallowed.

“Who are you?””

She took a slow breath.

Then whispered:

“My name is Elena Hart.””

The room froze.

Because that was impossible.

My mother’s name.

My mother had been dead for eight years.

The woman looked at me.

And said:

“I’m your mother.””

I dropped the photograph.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“Clara—”

“My mother died.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know what they told you.””

I backed away.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No!””

My voice echoed through the diner.

“You’re lying.””

Elena looked at Liam.

And the sadness in her eyes scared me.

Because Liam didn’t look surprised.

He looked devastated.

Like he had known this moment would come.

I turned toward him.

“You knew.””

His silence answered.

Again.

My mother looked at me.

“My daughter…”

I shook my head.

“Don’t call me that.””

She cried.

But she still stepped forward.

“Your father and I didn’t leave you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“We were trying to keep you alive.””

The room went silent.

Then Elena said the words that changed everything.

“The night Daniel disappeared…”

She looked at Liam.

“He wasn’t running from Victor.””

A pause.

“He was running from someone inside his own family.””

My blood went cold.

“Who?””

Elena looked directly at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Someone who shares your last name.””
