Chapter 8: The Recording Nobody Expected

“Don't plug it into your computer yet,” Derrick warned.

Julian held the flash drive between his fingers.

“Why not?””

“We don't know what's on it. We should make a forensic copy and preserve the original.””

Gloria sank into the leather chair beside the desk.

“I don't understand. Why would your father hide something like this?””

Julian looked at the photograph.

“Maybe he was afraid someone would find it.””

“Who?””

“I don't know, Mom. That's the problem. Nobody seems to know anything until it becomes convenient.””

Gloria flinched.

He regretted the sharpness of his words, but he didn't take them back.

Derrick placed the documents carefully into a clear protective sleeve.

“I can arrange for an independent specialist to examine the drive. But there's another issue we need to address.””

Julian looked at him.

“The trust?””

“The trust, the suspicious authorization, and the recording. We should assume that any records connected to these matters could be relevant. Until we've verified them, don't confront anyone privately or agree to sign anything.””

Julian gave a humorless laugh.

“Considering what happened at the church, I wasn't planning on signing anything.””

Derrick nodded.

“Good.””

Julian's phone vibrated again.

This time, Vanessa was calling.

He watched her name flash across the screen.

Gloria looked at him.

“Are you going to answer?””

“I don't know.””

“Whatever you decide, make sure it's your decision. Not one made out of anger.””

Julian stared at his mother.

“That's an interesting thing to say after everything you've kept from me.””

She bowed her head.

“I deserve that.””

He accepted the call.

“Julian,” Vanessa said immediately, her voice trembling.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Are you alone?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Is your mother there?””

“Yes.””

“And Derrick?””

Julian's expression tightened.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because I need to tell you something before he convinces you to make another mistake.””

Julian glanced at Derrick, who had moved toward the bookshelf to give him privacy.

“Talk.””

Vanessa inhaled shakily.

“I know how the agreement looks. I know how the recording sounds. But I didn't set out to steal from you.””

“Did you sign my name?””

Silence.

“Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

The admission came so quietly that he almost missed it.

Julian closed his eyes.

“Why?””

“I was told it was necessary to protect the trust.””

“By whom?””

“I can't tell you over the phone.””

“You can tell me right now.””

“Julian, please. You need to understand that your father left something unfinished. Someone has been trying to activate the clause for years. I thought I could stop it before it hurt you.””

“By forging my signature?””

“I believed I had permission.””

“From whom?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I know you don't believe me.””

“You haven't given me a reason to.””

“I found documents in your father's office. They showed that the trust could be transferred under certain conditions. I was told that if I didn't act, someone else would gain control.””

“Who told you?””

“I can't say.””

“Then this conversation is over.””

“No! Please, just listen.””

Julian gripped the edge of the desk.

“You've spent months in my life. You've met my family. You've sat at this desk.

You've held my hand and promised to build a future with me. If you knew something that could hurt me, you should have told me.””

“I was trying to keep you safe.””

“Stop using that excuse!””

His voice cracked.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered, “Do you remember the night your father died?””

Julian stared at the photograph.

“Yes.””

“You told me once that he called you before he went into the hospital.””

Julian said nothing.

“He wanted to tell you something, didn't he?””

Julian's fingers tightened around the phone.

“How do you know that?””

“You told me about the voicemail.””

The memory returned with painful clarity.

Six years earlier, Julian had been working late when his father called. Julian saw the missed call only hours later, followed by a voicemail he had saved and replayed dozens of times.

His father sounded tired but calm.

Call me when you get a chance, son. There's something important we need to discuss.

Julian had called back the next morning.

His mother answered and told him his father had been taken to the hospital overnight.

By the time Julian arrived, his father was unconscious.

He died that evening.

Julian had never forgotten the voicemail.

But he had never told Vanessa the exact words.

“Why are you bringing this up?”” he asked.

“Because your father left another message. One nobody told you about.””

Julian's heart began pounding.

“What message?””

“I don't know the entire contents. I only heard part of it.””

“Where did you hear it?””

“In the recording.””

Julian looked toward the flash drive.

“What recording?””

“The one I found in your father's office. It was on an old device. The same conversation that led me to the trust documents.””

“Why didn't you tell me about it?””

“Because the message mentions your mother.””

Gloria rose from her chair.

Julian held up one hand, silently asking her to wait.

“What does it say about my mother?””

Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Your father said he didn't know who he could trust anymore.””

Julian felt the room tilt.

“That doesn't prove anything.””

“No. But the next part might.””

“What next part?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said, “He mentioned a second signature.””

Julian went completely still.

“What signature?””

“I don't know. The recording cut off before he explained.””

“Where is that recording now?””

“On the flash drive.””

Julian looked down at the device in his hand.

“You knew about the flash drive?””

“I knew there was one. I didn't know where your father had hidden it until I found the compartment.””

Julian's voice became cold.

“You searched my house, found hidden documents, forged my signature, and kept all of this from me. And you expect me to trust you because you say you were trying to help?””

“No,” Vanessa whispered.

“I expect you to hear the recording before you decide who I am.””

He ended the call.

For several seconds, he stood motionless.

Then Gloria approached him.

“What did she say?””

Julian looked at her.

“She admitted signing my name.””

Gloria covered her mouth.

“She said she believed she had permission to do it. She claims someone told her the trust was in danger.””

“Who?””

“She won't say.””

Gloria sat down again.

Julian stared at her.

“Mom, did Dad leave another voicemail?””

She looked confused.

“Another one?””

“He called me the night before he went into the hospital. I saved the message. Vanessa claims there's another recording in that flash drive.””

Gloria's face changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Her eyes shifted toward the desk, and her fingers began rubbing together.

Julian saw it.

“Mom?””

She swallowed.

“Your father recorded many things when he was working. Notes, reminders, business conversations.””

“Did he record a message about the trust?””

“I don't know.””

“Did he mention a second signature?””

Gloria's breathing grew shallow.

Derrick turned away from the bookshelf.

“Mrs. Carter?””

She shook her head.

“I can't do this.””

Julian stepped closer.

“You've said that every time I ask you a question about Dad.””

“Because you don't understand what you're asking me to remember.””

“Then explain it.””

Gloria pressed her palms against her knees.

“The night your father died, I was in his hospital room. He was awake for a short time. He asked me to bring him the folder from his office.””

“What folder?””

“The original trust agreement.””

Julian felt his chest tighten.

“Did you bring it?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

She began crying again.

“He told me there was a mistake in the paperwork. He said someone had signed a document without his knowledge. He wanted me to find out who had done it.””

Julian stared at her.

“And?””

Gloria's voice broke.

“Before he could tell me the name, a nurse came in. His condition suddenly worsened, and I was asked to leave the room.””

“Who was in there when you left?””

Gloria covered her face.

“I don't remember everyone.””

“You don't remember?””

“I was frightened! Your father was dying, Julian!””

He stepped back.

Then Derrick spoke quietly.

“Perhaps we should listen to the recording before drawing conclusions.””

Julian nodded.

Derrick arranged for a secure examination of the drive using a separate device and began reviewing the recovered files. Most were ordinary business notes, short voice memos, and scans of estate documents.

Then one audio file appeared.

Its creation date was six years earlier.

The filename contained only two words.

*FINAL WARNING.*

Derrick looked at Julian.

“Are you ready?””

Julian glanced at his mother.

She was staring at the screen, tears slipping down her cheeks.

“No,” Julian answered honestly.

Then he nodded.

“Play it.””

A burst of static filled the office.

His father's voice emerged, weak but unmistakable.

“If you're hearing this, it means I wasn't able to finish what I started.””

Julian gripped the back of the chair.

His father continued.

“Gloria, I need you to understand something. The second signature wasn't supposed to be there. I never approved the change.””

Gloria began shaking her head.

“No.””

The recording crackled.

Then his father's voice returned.

“And if Julian ever discovers who signed it, he must know the truth about the night I—”

The audio cut off.

Julian stared at the screen.

Derrick tried to replay the final seconds, but the file ended at the same point.

A new notification appeared on the computer.

The audio file had been modified.

Not six years earlier.

Three days ago.

Julian turned toward Derrick.

“Someone edited this.””

Derrick examined the metadata.

“Possibly. We need a specialist to determine exactly what happened.””

Gloria stood abruptly.

“I need to leave.””

Julian looked at her.

“Why?””

She was already walking toward the door.

“Mom!””

She stopped but didn't turn around.

Julian's voice shook.

“Did you sign the second signature?””

Gloria stood motionless.

May you like

Then she whispered, “I didn't know what else to do.””

And before Julian could ask another question, his mother walked out of the room.
