Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Family Secret
The gunshot had come from outside the house.
Richard pushed me behind the stone wall of the cellar passage.
“Stay down!””
My father rushed toward the main staircase.
“Don't go up there!”” I shouted.
He ignored me.
I heard the front door slam.
Then another gunshot.
Richard pulled out his phone.
“Security, this is Richard Whitmore. We have an armed intruder at Hayes House. Send police immediately.””
I looked at the photograph in my hand.
I should never have trusted Daniel.
My father had written those words.
Not Michael.
Not Richard.
My father.
I turned toward him as he returned to the passage.
“Who is Daniel?””
He stopped.
“You know who.””
“Daniel Mercer?””
He nodded.
“My CFO?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“He's been working for me for nine years.””
My father looked exhausted.
“Then you've made the same mistake I did.””
I stared at him.
“What mistake?””
“Trusting a man who knows exactly how to make himself indispensable.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Sir, we need to leave. The police are coming.””
My father ignored him.
“Eleanor, listen carefully. Daniel didn't simply disappear from Michael's life because I paid him. He made another arrangement.””
“What arrangement?””
“He agreed to help me protect the trust. In exchange, he wanted control of the investments.””
I frowned.
“That doesn't make sense. Daniel has never tried to control anything.””
“Because he was waiting.””
“For what?””
“For you to become powerful enough to give him what he wanted.””
I felt my chest tighten.
My father continued.
“Daniel knew that one day the trust would transfer to you. He believed that if he stayed close, you would eventually give him authority over it.””
I shook my head.
“He's my most trusted employee.””
“That's exactly what he wanted.””
Richard checked his phone.
“Security has confirmed the front gate is open. We need to move.””
I looked at my father.
“Tell me about the night Mother died.””
He closed his eyes.
“Not here.””
“Now.””
His expression hardened.
“Your mother discovered that Daniel had been secretly communicating with Michael. They were working together to gain control of the trust.””
“Why would Daniel work with his own son?””
“Because he believed Michael could get him access to the money faster.””
I thought about the emails Victoria had sent.
The forged documents.
The missing eighteen million dollars.
Suddenly, Daniel's involvement made terrible sense.
“Did Daniel kill Mother?””
My father looked at me.
“No.””
“Then who did?””
He hesitated.
“Michael.””
The room seemed to shrink.
I stared at him.
“You're saying my brother killed our mother?””
My father nodded.
“He came here that night. Your mother confronted him about the trust. They argued. He pushed her.””
I covered my mouth.
“He pushed her?””
“She fell against the fireplace.””
I remembered the scar on my father's eyebrow.
The broken window.
The way Michael had always escaped consequences.
My father continued.
“She was still alive when I found her.””
My voice barely worked.
“Why didn't you call an ambulance?””
“I did.””
“Then why did she die?””
“Because Michael had already called someone else.””
“Who?””
My father looked toward Richard.
Richard's face was pale.
“Your father told me the police arrived too late,” Richard said.
I turned toward him.
“That's not what I asked.””
My father finally answered.
“Daniel.””
I felt sick.
“He came here?””
“He arrived before the ambulance. He said he would take care of everything.””
“And you let him?””
“I was desperate.””
“What did he do?””
My father lowered his head.
“He took the original documents. He told me your mother was already dead. He convinced me that calling the police would expose the entire financial arrangement.””
I stared at him.
“You let him decide what happened to her?””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I stepped away.
“You keep saying that.””
He looked at me helplessly.
“Eleanor—”
“No.””
My voice was shaking.
“You don't get to use that excuse anymore.””
A phone vibrated.
Richard looked at his screen.
“It's Victoria.””
He answered.
“Where are you?””
Her voice was loud enough for me to hear.
“Richard, listen carefully. Michael has the certificate. If Eleanor gets it, everything is finished.””
Richard looked at me.
“Where are you?””
“At the hotel.””
“Stay there.””
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You still don't understand, do you?””
“Understand what?””
“Michael wasn't supposed to survive.””
Richard froze.
I stepped closer.
“What did you say?””
Victoria continued.
“Daniel arranged the accident. Michael was supposed to die before he could expose the original ownership agreement.””
I felt the room spin.
Richard's voice became sharp.
“Victoria, what have you done?””
“I did what I had to do.””
“Did you hire someone to kill him?””
“Don't pretend you're innocent. You signed the financing papers.””
Richard stared at the phone.
Victoria's voice softened.
“Come to the hotel, Richard. Bring Eleanor. We can still fix this.””
The call ended.
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
I looked at him.
“Your sister tried to have Michael killed?””
He nodded.
“And Daniel arranged it?””
“I don't know.””
I held up the photograph.
“Then we need to find out.””
We left through the back entrance.
A police vehicle was already approaching the property, but my father insisted we take a separate car.
Richard drove.
I sat in the passenger seat.
My father remained in the back, holding the metal box.
For twenty minutes, nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Where are you?””
His voice sounded calm.
“Eleanor, thank God. I've been trying to reach you.””
“I'm on my way to the hotel.””
There was a pause.
“Which hotel?””
“The Whitmore family hotel.””
Another pause.
Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.
“Don't go there.””
“Why?””
“Because Victoria isn't the person you need to worry about.””
I looked at Richard.
“Who is?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Your father.””
I turned toward the back seat.
My father was watching me.
Daniel continued.
“Eleanor, I need you to listen. Your father didn't fake his death to protect you. He did it because he was about to be arrested.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“For what?””
“Your mother's murder.””
My father leaned forward.
“Hang up.””
I ignored him.
Daniel continued.
“I have the original police report. Your father was the last person seen with your mother before she died. He altered the medical records, paid off the investigator, and arranged for the death certificate to be issued under false circumstances.””
I looked at my father.
“Is that true?””
He didn't answer.
Daniel continued.
“There's something else. The man in the hospital footage wasn't your father.””
“What?””
“It was a double.””
I stared at the screen.
“Who?””
“Thomas Reed. The security consultant I told you about.””
My father suddenly reached between the seats.
“Give me the phone!””
Richard swerved.
I pulled away.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“At your office.””
“Stay there.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
Daniel's voice broke.
“Because Michael is here.””
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
Richard slammed on the brakes.
“What happened?””
I looked at him.
“Daniel says Michael is at my office.””
My father began shaking his head.
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
He gripped the metal box.
“Michael doesn't want the money anymore.””
“Then what does he want?””
My father looked at me.
“He wants Daniel.””
I opened the car door.
Richard caught my wrist.
“Eleanor, wait!””
But I was already stepping onto the road.
Because for the first time, I understood that the missing money wasn't the center of this story.

The truth about my mother's death was.
And Daniel Mercer was the only person who might know exactly what happened.
