Chapter 6 - THE CABIN

We reached Blackwood Lake before sunset.
The old cabin looked exactly as I remembered it.
I hadn't been there in decades.
The windows were covered with dust.
The porch sagged.
The trees had grown taller.
Thomas walked beside me.
“This is where we planned to run away.”
I looked at him.
“You remember?”
“Every detail.”
“I thought we'd build a little house.”
“You wanted a garden.”
“And you wanted a dog.”
“I still want one.”
I smiled.
For a moment, the past felt close.
Then Daniel called from inside.
“Mom!”
We rushed in.
He stood beside the fireplace.
“There is something behind this.”
A loose stone had been removed.
Behind it was a metal box.
Claire stepped closer.
“My mother knew about this.”
Thomas nodded.
“Probably.”
The box opened.
Inside was a document.
The original trust.
And a letter from Robert.
I read it aloud.
To my children,
If you are reading this, then the truth has survived.
There were three children.
Three heirs.
Never allow anyone to separate them.
I stopped.
Daniel looked at Claire.
The letter continued.
The third child holds the key to the trust.
Claire frowned.
“What key?”
Thomas searched the box.
Nothing.
Then Claire touched her necklace.
“I've had this since I was a baby.”
She removed it.
It was a small silver pendant.
Thomas stared.
“That.”
“What?”
“That's the key.”
Claire opened it.
Inside was a tiny metal key.
The same crest appeared on it as the family trust.
I felt tears come to my eyes.
“My daughter carried the key for thirty years.”
Daniel stared at Claire.
“You were the insurance policy.”
Claire nodded slowly.
Victor had hidden the child who possessed the key.
Without her, the trust couldn't be opened.
A sound came from outside.
Branches breaking.
Thomas stood.
“Someone is here.”
Police moved toward the windows.
Then the cabin door opened.
Victor stood outside.
His face was calm.
“You found it.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You kidnapped my sister.”
Victor smiled.
“I protected her.”
Claire shouted:
“You lied to me!”
Victor looked at her.
“I gave you a life.”
“You stole my mother.”
“No.”
“You stole my family.”
Victor's expression hardened.
“I saved this family from destroying itself.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“You destroyed it.”
Victor raised his weapon.
“Give me the key.”
Claire backed away.
“No.”
Victor pointed at her.
“Give it to me.”
Daniel moved between them.
“You'll have to go through me.”
Victor smiled.
“I expected that.”
Then a second man appeared behind us.
He grabbed Claire.
She screamed.
The police turned.
Victor used the distraction to run.
Thomas chased him.
Daniel freed Claire.
I grabbed her hand.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Then Thomas returned.
“Victor escaped.”
Daniel looked furious.
“Where?”
Thomas pointed toward the lake.
“He took the boat.”
We ran outside.
A boat was disappearing into the darkness.
Victor stood at the back.
He held something in his hand.
The original trust.
And the key.
He had taken it from Claire without us noticing.
Then he shouted across the water:
“Now I have everything.”
The boat disappeared into the fog.
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“What do we do?”
Thomas stared into the darkness.
“We find him.”
I looked at my children.
For fifty years, my family had been divided.
May you like
Now, finally, we were together.
And I wasn't going to lose them again.
