Chapter 9: The Truth Nobody Wanted Found

The prison had always been full of lies.

But I had never understood how deep they went.

A lie about a fight.

A lie about a death.

A lie about a person.

Sometimes a lie wasn’t created to hide the truth.

Sometimes it was created to replace it.

And for three years, Blackridge had lived inside a carefully built story.

A story where Lena Parker was the problem.

A story where I was the villain.

A story where Evelyn Shaw was the hero who lost control.

But now every piece was falling apart.

And the person who had written the final chapter was supposed to be dead.

Officer Grant.

I stared at his signature on the transfer order.

My hands tightened around the paper.

Tiana watched my face.

“What are you thinking?””

I looked at her.

“That Grant wants us to find something.””

“Why?””

“Because if he wanted us gone, we would already be gone.””

The warden nodded slowly.

“She’s right.””

Tiana looked at him.

“You believe he’s alive?””

The warden didn’t answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

“I believe someone wants us to think he is.””

The three of us stood there surrounded by evidence, memories, and questions.

But one thing was clear.

Someone was controlling the investigation.

And they were always one step ahead.

The announcement repeated.

“Inmate Marla Hayes is to report immediately to administrative questioning.””

The warden looked at me.

“That’s a trap.””

“I know.””

“Then don’t go.””

I looked at him.

“If I don’t go, they’ll know we found something.””

Tiana nodded.

“She’s right.””

The warden looked frustrated.

“I spent years trying to protect this prison.””

I looked at him.

“Did you protect the prison?””

He lowered his eyes.

“Or did you protect the people running it?””

The question hurt him.

Because he knew the answer.

“I made mistakes.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“But mistakes can be fixed.””

The warden looked at me.

“You still believe that?””

I thought about Lena.

About the years I spent punishing myself.

About the person I became.

“Yes.””

I looked toward the door.

“Because someone once believed I could.””

Tiana followed me.

“I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

She frowned.

“No?””

“If Shaw wants me alone, bringing you makes her change plans.””

Tiana crossed her arms.

“You’re telling me to stay away?””

“I’m telling you to watch.””

She studied me.

“You’re learning.””

“What?””

“To think like an investigator.””

I almost smiled.

“Don’t get used to it.””

We separated.

I walked toward administration alone.

Every step felt familiar.

But different.

The same hallway.

The same cameras.

The same guards.

Except now I knew.

Every wall had ears.

Every door had secrets.

When I entered the questioning room, Evelyn Shaw was waiting.

Of course she was.

She sat calmly at the table.

A cup of coffee beside her.

Like this was a normal meeting.

Like she hadn’t destroyed people’s lives.

“Marla.””

I sat across from her.

“You wanted to talk.””

She smiled.

“You finally remember.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You knew.””

“I hoped.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She leaned back.

“It’s the truth.””

I looked at her.

“You changed my records.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“You’re admitting it?””

“You already know.””

“Why?””

“Because I needed you to stay exactly where you were.””

My jaw tightened.

“A prisoner.””

“A survivor.””

I laughed.

“That’s what you call it?””

Evelyn looked at me carefully.

“You think I made you weak.””

“You did.””

“No.””

Her voice became serious.

“I made you untouchable.””

I stared at her.

“You destroyed my life.””

“I saved your life.””

The room became silent.

I hated that part of me still wanted to believe her.

Because once, she had saved me.

Once.

And that was the most dangerous kind of person.

Someone who had done good before doing terrible things.

“Where is Grant?””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“You found his name.””

“Answer me.””

She looked away.

“That’s complicated.””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“Three years ago, you told me Grant was the threat.””

“He was.””

“Then why are you protecting him?””

“I’m not.””

“Someone is.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Marla.””

Her voice softened.

“You don’t understand what Grant found.””

“What?””

“The person above all of us.””

I froze.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked toward the camera in the corner.

Then lowered her voice.

“Blackridge was never the operation.””

I stared at her.

“It was a piece.””

“Of what?””

She didn’t answer.

That annoyed me.

“You always do this.””

“Do what?””

“Give half the truth and expect people to trust you.””

A sad smile crossed her face.

“You learned.””

“What?””

“To question everyone.””

I looked at her.

“Including you.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“That is what I wanted.””

I didn’t expect that.

“What?””

Evelyn leaned forward.

“I needed you to stop believing people were either good or bad.””

The words sounded familiar.

Because they were true.

But I didn’t forgive her.

Not yet.

“Why Lena?””

Evelyn looked down.

That was the first time I saw regret.

“She got too close.””

“To what?””

“The truth.””

I waited.

“Lena discovered the financial records.””

“What records?””

“Payments.””

“From who?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“People outside Blackridge.””

My stomach tightened.

“Names?””

“Not names.””

She paused.

“Organizations.””

Before I could ask more, the lights suddenly went out.

The room went black.

A second later, alarms screamed.

Evelyn stood.

“What’s happening?””

For the first time, she sounded afraid.

Not pretending.

Actually afraid.

The emergency lights came on.

Red.

Flashing.

The door opened.

A guard rushed in.

“Shaw!””

She turned.

“What?””

His face was pale.

“We found someone.””

“Who?””

The guard looked at me.

Then at Evelyn.

“Officer Grant.””

Nobody moved.

Evelyn’s face lost color.

“He’s alive?””

The guard nodded.

“But there’s a problem.””

“What?””

“He asked to speak to Marla.””

My heartbeat changed.

“Where is he?””

The guard hesitated.

“In the old interrogation wing.””

The warden’s voice came through the radio.

“Lock down that area.””

Too late.

Because we were already moving.

Tiana joined us halfway down the hallway.

One look at my face told her.

“Grant?””

I nodded.

The old interrogation wing had been abandoned for years.

No cameras.

No working lights.

No reason for anyone to go there.

Which meant it was exactly where someone would hide.

The door creaked open.

Inside, a man sat at the table.

Older.

Tired.

A scar across his face.

But alive.

Officer Grant.

He looked at me.

And for a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he said:

“Marla.””

My fists tightened.

“You’re alive.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why did everyone think you were dead?””

His eyes moved to Evelyn.

Then back to me.

“Because someone needed me to disappear.””

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Grant looked at the three of us.

Then whispered:

“The same person who made Lena Parker’s death look like your fault.””

Silence.

I waited.

Grant reached into his jacket.

And placed a photograph on the table.

A photograph I had seen before.

The one he used to threaten me.

But this time, I saw the entire image.

Not just the corner.

Not just the fear.

The person standing beside Lena.

The person I had never noticed.

The person who had been there from the beginning.

My breath stopped.

Because the person in the photograph was not Evelyn Shaw.

Not Grant.

Not anyone from Blackridge.

It was someone I trusted more than anyone.

Someone who had helped me survive.

Someone who had been beside me every single day.

Grant looked at me.

“Marla…”

His voice was quiet.

“You need to understand something.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Lena wasn’t killed because she discovered the truth.””

A pause.

“She was killed because she discovered who you were protecting.””

My eyes moved to the person in the picture.

And my entire world collapsed.

May you like

Because the person who betrayed Lena…

was the same person who had saved me.
