Chapter 4: The Agreement Nobody Was Supposed to Find
Marcus read the sentence again.
Then again.
His eyes moved across the email printed on the page, but the words refused to make sense.
*“If Ethan receives this scholarship, the agreement we discussed will no longer be possible.””*
The dining room suddenly felt smaller.
The bright lights above the table, the untouched food, the birthday decorations around Noah’s chair — everything that had looked normal an hour ago now felt like a carefully arranged scene hiding something rotten underneath.
Marcus slowly lowered the paper.
“Vanessa.””
She didn’t answer.
“Look at me.””
She did.
But for the first time since he met her, Marcus didn’t see the confident woman who always had an explanation.
He saw someone cornered.
“What agreement?”” he asked.
Vanessa took a breath.
“It’s complicated.””
Marcus gave a short, humorless laugh.
“Complicated?””
He held up the email.
“You tried to remove Ethan from an advanced program. You told him his achievements were causing problems. You hid his scholarship letter. And now there’s an agreement that becomes impossible if he succeeds.””
He stepped closer.
“And you’re telling me it’s complicated?””
Vanessa looked toward the boys.
That small movement didn’t escape Marcus.
“Not in front of them.””
“No.””
Marcus’s voice was firm.
“Actually, especially in front of them.””
Ethan stood frozen near the table.
He had spent months feeling like he was imagining things.
Maybe Vanessa was just strict.
Maybe he was being too sensitive.
Maybe he really was making Noah feel bad without realizing it.
But now, every hidden conversation and every uncomfortable moment was coming back.
And for the first time, he wasn’t the only person who noticed.
Noah looked at his mother.
“Mom…”
Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.
“Not now, Noah.””
“No.””
His voice surprised everyone.
“No, I want to know.””
She stared at him.
“Why are you doing this?””
The question seemed to hurt her more than Marcus’s accusations.
“I’m doing this because I care about you.””
Noah shook his head.
“Then why did you lie to me?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus looked at his son.
“What did she lie about?””
Noah looked uncomfortable.
Then he glanced at Ethan.
“I don’t know everything.””
Ethan noticed.
“Tell him.””
Noah looked at him.
Ethan nodded.
“You should.””
Noah took a deep breath.
“Mom told me Ethan was applying to schools far away because he didn’t want to be part of this family.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“What?””
“That’s not true,” Ethan said quietly.
“I know that now.””
Noah rubbed his hands together.
“She told me Ethan was obsessed with leaving.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Because he was.””
Ethan stared.
“I was fourteen.””
The simplicity of the sentence made everyone silent.
“I was doing homework.””
“You were planning your future,” Vanessa replied.
“Yes.””
“And you were forgetting your family.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No. I was trying to make my dad proud.””
Marcus looked down.
Those words hurt.
Because Ethan wasn’t accusing him.
He was telling the truth.
Denise stood quietly nearby, allowing the family to process the damage.
Then Marcus looked at the email again.
“Who sent this?””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
“Who?””
Her silence lasted too long.
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Vanessa.””
She finally whispered.
“Rebecca.””
Nobody reacted.
But Ethan noticed the way Marcus’s face changed.
A name.
A memory.
Something he understood.
“Who is Rebecca?”” Ethan asked.
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Vanessa did.
“She was someone from before.””
“Before what?”” Noah asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“Before this family.””
Marcus stared at her.
“That’s not the whole truth.””
Ethan looked between them.
His father’s reaction was different now.
Not anger.
Recognition.
“Dad?””
Marcus sat down slowly.
“Rebecca worked with me years ago.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She was more than that.””
Marcus looked at her sharply.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Change the subject.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Change the subject? She was the person who told me you were going to leave.””
Marcus froze.
Ethan and Noah exchanged looks.
“What?”” Ethan asked.
Vanessa’s voice became emotional.
“Before we got married, Rebecca contacted me.””
Marcus stood.
“Vanessa.””
“She told me Marcus had plans.””
“Because she was angry.””
“She told me he was going to invest in Ethan’s future and forget about everyone else.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
“But I believed it.””
The room went quiet.
Ethan felt something shift.
Because suddenly this wasn’t just about jealousy.
It was about fear.
A fear Vanessa had allowed to grow until it damaged everyone around her.
Denise spoke carefully.
“So Rebecca contacted you because of Ethan’s scholarship?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“No.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa looked down.
“She made me an offer.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What offer?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Marcus’s voice became colder.
“What offer?””
“She said she could help Noah.””
Noah looked confused.
“Help me?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“She knew people.””
“What people?””
“She said she could get you into a better school.””
Noah blinked.
“You did all this because of a school?””
“No.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because I was scared.””
Nobody expected that answer.
She looked at Ethan.
“You don’t understand what it feels like to watch your child feel like he’s always behind someone else.””
Ethan’s expression softened slightly.
Because he understood that feeling.
Maybe too well.
But then Vanessa continued.
“And every time Ethan succeeded, I saw Noah getting further away from him.””
Noah looked hurt.
“But I never asked you to do that.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I know.””
The quiet admission was painful.
“I know you didn’t.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Then why?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Because I thought if Ethan slowed down, Noah would finally have a chance.””
Ethan felt a strange mixture of anger and sadness.
“Did you ever think I deserved a chance too?””
Vanessa looked at him.
The question stayed between them.
Because she had no answer.
Marcus walked toward the kitchen.
He needed space.
But before he reached the doorway, he stopped.
“Did you sign anything?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Marcus turned.
“Vanessa.””
Her silence answered again.
“What did you sign?””
She looked terrified.
“I didn’t think it would matter.””
Marcus stared.
“People only say that when they know it matters.””
Denise stepped forward.
“I think you need to see the rest.””
She opened the folder again.
Inside was another document.
Marcus took it.
This time, his hands didn’t shake.
He was prepared.
But the moment he read the title, his expression changed.
*Academic Transfer Sponsorship Agreement*
Ethan moved closer.
“What is that?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You were planning to transfer Ethan?””
“No.””
“Then what is this?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“It was supposed to be for Noah.””
Marcus read the document.
Then his eyes stopped at one section.
A section that connected the agreement to a financial arrangement.
A section that explained why Ethan’s scholarship was a problem.
Marcus slowly looked up.
“You promised Rebecca something.””
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
“I thought I could fix everything.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You didn’t fix anything.””
His voice broke slightly.
“You turned my children against each other.””
The word children made Vanessa look away.
Because she knew exactly what she had done.
Noah stepped closer to Ethan.
“What happens now?””
Nobody answered.
Outside, thunder rolled in the distance.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
The sound cut through the room.
Everyone looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Marcus almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then he saw the preview message.
One sentence.
And the name attached to it.
His face changed instantly.
“Marcus,” Vanessa whispered.
But he was already reading.
Because the person contacting him wasn’t Rebecca.
It wasn’t the school.
It wasn’t anyone they expected.
It was someone who had been watching their family for months.
The message said:
*“You finally found out what Vanessa did. But you still don’t know what Ethan’s mother left behind.””*
Marcus went completely still.
Ethan noticed.
“Dad?””
Marcus slowly lifted his eyes.
And for the first time that night, Vanessa looked afraid for a reason that had nothing to do with being caught.
Because someone else knew the secret.
May you like
A secret about Ethan’s past.
A secret nobody in that house had ever told him.
