Chapter 11: The Confession in the Factory
The old Carter factory had been closed for eleven years.
It stood on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by rusted fencing and overgrown weeds.
My father had built the original facility when his company was still small. I remembered visiting it as a child, sitting on his shoulders while he showed me the machinery.
Now its windows were broken.
Its loading doors were covered in graffiti.
And somewhere inside, my mother was being held captive.
Detective Harris stood beside the police vehicle.
“You are not going inside alone.””
I looked at her.
“He specifically demanded the key.””
“Which is why we're going to control the situation.””
Daniel stood a few feet away, staring at the building.
“I need to tell you something.””
I turned.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“My father didn't kill Matthew.””
I frowned.
“You said you knew who did.””
“I said I thought I knew.””
“Then tell me.””
Daniel looked toward the factory.
“Richard.””
I shook my head.
“Richard is in custody.””
“He wasn't always the man you know. Before he became wealthy, before Carter Construction, he was desperate. He believed Helen had a right to the company because she was the older sibling.””
I stared at him.
“What does that have to do with the baby?””
Daniel's voice cracked.
“Richard believed that if Helen had a biological son, she could challenge Daniel's control of the family estate.””
“But she couldn't have children.””
“She could. The doctors told her she was pregnant before the triplets were born. She lost the pregnancy.””
I stared at him.
“Then who were the three babies?””
Daniel looked away.
“My father and Richard arranged for Claire's triplets to replace the children Helen and Richard couldn't have.””
The words hit me like a physical blow.
“Replace them?””
“Richard wanted a son. He wanted an heir. He didn't care where the child came from.””
I shook my head.
“Why would my father agree?””
“He didn't. That's why he took you.””
Daniel continued.
“Richard kept Michael. Thomas took Matthew. And Daniel Carter brought you home.””
I felt sick.
“Then what happened to Matthew?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Thomas told me that Richard came to the hospital that night and tried to take all three babies. There was a struggle. Matthew was injured.””
“Was he killed?””
“I don't know.””
“Daniel!””
He looked at me.
“I was six years old when I heard the story. My father told me Matthew died because of Richard. Later, I found documents suggesting something else.””
“What?””
“Thomas was the one who signed the hospital's death report.””
I stepped closer.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted to hide what happened.””
Detective Harris interrupted.
“We need to move.””
She gave instructions to the officers.
Two would enter through the rear loading area. Another team would secure the perimeter.
I looked at Daniel.
“If you know anything else, tell me now.””
He hesitated.
Then he reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small photograph.
It showed Thomas holding a baby.
On the back was a date.
Thirty years earlier.
Beneath it, someone had written:
*Matthew survived.*
I stared at the words.
“Why didn't you show me this?””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“Because I thought the baby was you.””
I couldn't speak.
Detective Harris took the photograph.
“Where did you get this?””
“From my adoptive father's belongings.””
She looked at him.
“Your adoptive father was Thomas?””
Daniel nodded.
The world seemed to tilt again.
The man who had kidnapped my mother had raised Daniel.
My supposed brother had been raised by the same man who might have killed one of us.
Detective Harris's radio crackled.
“Movement inside the building.””
She raised her hand.
“Everyone hold position.””
A side door opened.
A man stepped into the loading bay.
Thomas Bennett.
He looked older than the photographs, with gray hair and a deeply lined face.
But his eyes were sharp.
He held a pistol in one hand.
In the other was a phone.
He looked directly at me.
“Marcus.””
I stepped forward.
“Where's my mother?””
Thomas smiled.
“She's safe.””
“Let me see her.””
“Not until you give me the key.””
I held up the gold key.
“First, tell me why you stole my life.””
His smile disappeared.
“I didn't steal anything.””
“You let everyone believe I was dead.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From whom?””
He looked toward Daniel.
“From him.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You're lying.””
Thomas raised the gun.
“Stay where you are.””
I stared at the man who had supposedly been my father.
“Why did you leave Claire?””
His expression changed.
For a moment, I saw something like shame.
“Because I made a mistake.””
“You abandoned her.””
“I was twenty-three. I had no money. Richard offered me a way out.””
“By selling your children?””
Thomas looked at the ground.
“I never wanted that.””
“But you signed the papers.””
“I was threatened.””
“With what?””
He looked at Daniel.
Then he whispered:
“Your brother was born with a heart condition. The doctors said he might not survive. Richard wanted him removed from the records because he didn't want a sick child associated with the family.””
Daniel went pale.
Thomas continued.
“I refused. So Richard attacked me. I fought back.
There was a fire in the hospital records room. When it was over, one baby was missing.””
“Matthew?””
Thomas nodded.
“I thought he was dead.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Then why did you keep Daniel?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Because I thought he was the only child I had left.””
Daniel's voice broke.
“You told me I was your biological son.””
“You were.””
“But you knew about Marcus.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Yes.””
“And Claire?””
He closed his eyes.
“I knew she was searching.””
“Then why didn't you tell her?””
“Because Richard said he'd kill her.””
A metallic crash sounded inside the factory.
Detective Harris glanced toward the loading bay.
Thomas noticed.
His expression hardened.
“You brought the police.””
I lowered the key.
“I'm not handing you anything until I see my mother.””
He raised the pistol.
“Then you'll never see her again.””
A woman's voice suddenly came from behind him.
“Thomas, put the gun down.””
I froze.
Claire stepped into the loading bay.
She was holding a small envelope.
Thomas stared at her.
“Claire?””
She walked closer.
“I know what you did.””
His face crumpled.
“I'm sorry.””
“You don't get to say that after thirty years.””
She held up the envelope.
“I found the original hospital report.””
Thomas's eyes widened.
“Where did you get that?””
Claire looked at me.
“Your father sent it to me before he died.””
Thomas lowered the gun slightly.
“What does it say?””
Claire opened the envelope.
“It says Matthew survived.””
Daniel stumbled backward.
Thomas began shaking.
Claire looked directly at him.
“And it says the child who died that night wasn't Matthew.””
Silence.
I stared at the paper.
“Then who died?””
Claire's voice broke.
“Your father identified the body as one of the triplets.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
Claire continued.
“But the DNA report proves the child who died wasn't related to us.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Thomas.
“Who was the dead baby?””
Thomas suddenly began crying.
He looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Richard's son.””
