Chapter 10: The Truth She Came Back For

I couldn't move.

My mother stood in the doorway.

Alive.

Older than the woman in my childhood photographs, but unmistakable.

Same eyes.

Same mouth.

Same tiny scar above her eyebrow.

The face I had spent twenty years trying to remember correctly was suddenly standing ten feet away.

And the first thing she said was:

“Maya, don't trust Daniel.””

Daniel went pale.

“Rebecca.””

My mother looked at him.

“You had twenty years to tell her the truth.””

“I was protecting her.””

“You were protecting yourself.””

The armed man beside her lowered the gun.

Marcus immediately stepped in front of me.

My mother shook her head.

“He won't hurt you.””

Marcus didn't move.

“Who is he?””

“My son.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

The man looked at me.

He was around my age.

He had my mother's eyes.

My heart seemed to stop.

My mother reached for his arm.

“This is your brother.””

Vanessa whispered, “Brother?””

I looked at my mother.

“You have a son?””

“I had him before I met your father.””

The room seemed to shrink.

My mother stepped inside.

“I was nineteen when I left home. I met his father. We were together for two years. Then he disappeared.””

She looked at the man beside her.

“His name is Elijah.””

Elijah lowered the gun.

“My mother raised me after my father vanished.””

I couldn't stop staring at him.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

My mother looked at Daniel.

“Because your father didn't know.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That isn't true.””

My mother turned sharply.

“You knew.””

“I discovered it later.””

“When?””

“The year before your father's death.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And you still said nothing?””

“I was trying to protect both of you.””

My mother laughed without humor.

“You always use that word.””

She walked toward the desk.

Her fingers brushed the photograph of herself and my father.

“He loved you,” she said.

I swallowed.

“Then why did you leave me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was told they would kill you.””

“Who?””

She looked at the family friend.

He lowered his head.

My mother pointed at him.

“He was the one who found me after the accident.””

I stared at him.

“You told everyone I was dead.””

He nodded.

“I did.””

“Why?””

“Because your father paid me to.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Your father knew he was being watched. He staged my death so I could disappear.””

I shook my head.

“But Dad told me she was dead.””

“He wanted you to believe it,” my mother said.

“He thought ignorance would keep you alive.””

“Then why did he die?””

She looked toward the recorder.

“Because he made one mistake.””

Daniel whispered, “He trusted Vanessa.””

Vanessa recoiled.

“No.””

My mother looked at her.

“You gave them the key.””

Vanessa began shaking.

“I didn't know what it opened.””

“You knew enough.””

“I thought they were going to hurt Maya.””

“They were.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I was scared.””

My mother softened for a moment.

“I know.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You almost killed me.””

“I know.””

“You watched me drown.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

She lowered her hands.

“Because they showed me a photograph of you.””

My stomach tightened.

“They said they already had someone inside the house.””

Marcus looked around.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Then at the family friend.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“They never told me.””

My mother stepped closer.

“They didn't need to.””

She pointed toward the black box.

“Because the person controlling everything is already dead.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The man from the photograph.””

Marcus looked at the family friend.

“But he's alive.””

My mother shook her head.

“Not the man who started this.””

She reached into her coat and removed a folded document.

She handed it to me.

I opened it.

It was my father's original will.

My name appeared beside a clause I had never seen.

*Upon my death, control of all assets, records, and evidence transfers to Maya Lee only if she remains alive and refuses all offers from family members.*

Below it was another sentence.

*The person who attempts to harm Maya forfeits every claim.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She started crying.

My mother continued.

“Your father knew someone would try to force you to surrender the property.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And the vault?””

“The vault contains proof of who financed the entire operation.””

Marcus picked up the documents.

“Then let's expose them.””

My mother shook her head.

“We already did.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She nodded toward the family friend.

“He sent everything to the authorities before coming here.””

The man slowly pulled out his phone.

“Your father's records have already been delivered.””

Daniel's face changed.

“You betrayed us.””

The man looked at him.

“I finally stopped betraying myself.””

Sirens sounded outside.

Vanessa looked toward the hidden staircase.

“No.””

Marcus put his arm around me.

The sound grew louder.

Police vehicles surrounded the mansion.

Daniel stepped backward.

My mother watched him.

“You should have told her the truth twenty years ago.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I was afraid.””

I nodded.

“So was I.””

He lowered his eyes.

Officers entered the mansion.

Within minutes, Daniel was taken away.

Vanessa followed.

She stopped beside me before leaving.

“I am sorry.””

I looked at her.

“I believe you.””

She started crying.

“But I don't forgive you yet.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

Then she was gone.

The pool outside was still lit beneath the sunset.

The same water I had almost died in.

My mother walked beside me.

We stopped at the edge.

“I don't know how to be your daughter again,” I whispered.

She took my hand.

“You don't have to.””

I looked at her.

“Then what do we do?””

She smiled through tears.

“We start.””

Marcus joined us.

He looked at my mother.

“You really are her.””

My mother smiled.

“I've heard a lot about you.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Good things?””

My mother laughed.

“Mostly.””

For the first time that night, I laughed too.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

One final message.

Unknown number.

*Your father wasn't protecting you from us.*

My smile disappeared.

A second message appeared.

*He was protecting us from you.*

I stared at the screen.

My mother saw my face.

“What is it?””

I turned the phone toward her.

She read the messages.

All the color disappeared from her face.

Marcus noticed.

“What does that mean?””

My mother didn't answer.

She looked toward the mansion.

Then toward the pool.

Finally, she whispered,

“Your father never told you what was in the last room.””

I frowned.

“What last room?””

My mother squeezed my hand.

May you like

“The room he built for you.””

And somewhere inside the mansion, behind a wall no one had mentioned, a lock clicked open.
