The $18,000 Betrayal / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Email

Jordan held the phone between us.

The screen glowed against his nervous face.

I could hear his breathing.

Slow.

Uneven.

Arthur stood three feet away, completely still.

“What is it?”” I asked.

Jordan didn't answer immediately.

He opened an email.

The sender was the hospital.

The subject line read:

*Insurance Claim Decision — Rose Bennett*

My grandmother's name.

My heart started beating faster.

“Read it,” I said.

Jordan swallowed.

“It says the insurance company approved the surgery.””

I frowned.

“When?””

He scrolled.

“Three weeks before the payment.””

I stared at him.

“That can't be right.””

Jordan turned the phone toward me.

There it was.

The approval date.

The surgery had been fully authorized before I transferred a single dollar.

I looked at Rose.

“Did you know about this?””

Rose shook her head.

“No.””

“Grandma, did Dad tell you the insurance denied it?””

Rose looked confused.

Arthur immediately interrupted.

“Maya, this is not the time—”

“Did he?””

Rose turned toward Arthur.

“Arthur?””

He didn't answer.

The silence was answer enough.

My mouth went dry.

I looked at the receipts scattered across the table.

“Why did I pay this?””

Arthur shook his head.

“You didn't understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

“It was complicated.””

“Explain it.””

“I handled the hospital.””

“You told me the insurance rejected the claim.””

Arthur's face hardened.

“That was what I was told.””

“By who?””

“I don't remember.””

“You don't remember?””

“Maya, you're turning this into something it isn't.””

I laughed once.

There was nothing funny about it.

“You watched me empty my savings.””

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

“I never asked you to empty your savings.””

“Yes, you did.””

“No.””

“You said Grandma would lose the surgery slot unless the hospital got the money immediately.””

“I said the hospital needed payment.””

“You said insurance wasn't going to cover it.””

“I said there were problems with the insurance.””

“You said I was the only one who could help.””

Arthur's expression didn't move.

Rose slowly sat back down.

Her hands were trembling.

“I remember that,” she said.

Arthur looked at her.

“Mom—”

“I remember you telling Maya that.””

His jaw clenched.

Jordan scrolled farther.

“There's another email.””

Arthur's head turned sharply.

Jordan noticed.

“What?”” I asked.

Jordan opened it.

His eyebrows lifted.

“This one is from the billing department.””

“Read it.””

“It says… ‘Your account has been credited in full.’”

I stared at him.

“Credited?””

He nodded.

“Patient balance: zero.””

A strange ringing filled my ears.

I took the phone from him.

The words were right there.

*INSURANCE PAYMENT RECEIVED — PATIENT BALANCE: $0.*

My fingers went numb.

I looked at Arthur.

“Then where did my eighteen thousand dollars go?””

He didn't respond.

“Dad.””

Nothing.

“Arthur,” Rose said.

He looked at her.

She was crying now.

Not loudly.

Just two tears slipping down her cheeks.

“I trusted you with my medical bills.””

Arthur's voice came out low.

“You were sick.””

“And you handled everything.””

“Yes.””

“Then tell her.””

He looked at me.

“I made a mistake.””

I froze.

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

“What kind?””

He opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Jordan stepped closer.

“Dad, don't lie.””

Arthur turned toward him.

“Watch your mouth.””

“No.””

The word landed hard.

Jordan was shaking, but he didn't move.

“You told Maya the insurance didn't pay.””

“I said there was confusion.””

“You told her to send the money.””

“I never forced her.””

“You knew she'd do it.””

Arthur's face darkened.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

Jordan looked at me.

“I can show you.””

He took the phone back.

“What?””

“The payment history.””

He opened another screen.

A billing statement appeared.

Then another.

Then a transaction record.

My name was listed beside the payment.

*MAYA BENNETT — $18,000.42*

Below it was a second line.

*INSURANCE PAYMENT — RECEIVED.*

I stared at the screen.

“Why would they accept both?””

Jordan's voice was quiet.

“They didn't.””

“What do you mean?””

“They refunded one of them.””

My stomach dropped.

He scrolled again.

A new line appeared.

*REFUND ISSUED — ACCOUNT ENDING 4418.*

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Arthur suddenly stepped toward the phone.

“That's private.””

Jordan pulled it away.

“Why?””

“Because it's my mother's account.””

Rose looked at Arthur.

“What account ends in 4418?””

Arthur said nothing.

I looked between them.

“Dad?””

His face had gone pale.

Jordan slowly lifted the phone.

“Grandma…”

Rose's eyes fixed on the screen.

She leaned forward.

Her expression changed.

“That number.””

“What?””

“I know that number.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

Rose whispered,

“That’s your account.””

The room seemed to shrink.

I looked at my father.

For the first time since Grandma went into the hospital, Arthur looked scared.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Scared.

And before anyone could speak, his phone began ringing.

He looked at the caller ID.

His entire expression changed.

Jordan saw it too.

“Who is calling you?””

Arthur didn't answer.

The phone kept ringing.

May you like

Then a message appeared beneath the caller's name.

*We need to talk about the refund.*
