Chapter 1: The Necklace Was Never the Real Problem
“WHY ARE YOU USING MY CARD FOR HER?!””
My voice ripped through the luxury jewelry boutique so sharply that the jeweler dropped his eyes to the marble counter.
Daniel froze with my black credit card between his fingers.
Beside him, Vanessa stood beneath the boutique’s brilliant crystal lights, wearing a champagne sequin dress that glittered with every movement. An expensive diamond necklace rested against her collarbone. She had been admiring herself in the mirror seconds earlier, smiling as though the entire world existed to serve her.
Then I slammed the jewelry box shut.
The sound cracked through the room.
Vanessa jerked her hand away from the necklace. Daniel’s fingers tightened around my card before he finally released it onto the counter.
For three seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel looked over his shoulder at the jeweler, as though I were the inconvenience rather than the man attempting to spend my money on another woman.
“Nia,” Daniel said through clenched teeth, “what the hell is wrong with you?””
I stared at him.
The man standing in front of me was wearing the black suit I had helped him choose for our engagement dinner. His watch was a gift from me. His shoes had been purchased with my money. Even the reservation at the hotel where this boutique was located had been charged to an account I maintained.
And now he was buying diamonds for Vanessa.
“Pick up that card,” I said.
Daniel glanced at the jeweler.
“Stop embarrassing me.””
I stepped closer to the marble counter.
“It has MY name on it!””
The jeweler quietly lifted the necklace from Vanessa’s neck and placed it inside the velvet-lined box.
Vanessa let out a theatrical sigh.
“Oh, please,” she said, adjusting the neckline of her dress.
“It’s just jewelry.””
I turned toward her.
“Then why don't you pay for it?””
Her lips parted.
Daniel immediately stepped between us.
“Vanessa is my friend,” he said.
“I was doing her a favor.””
“A favor?”” I repeated.
“With my credit card?””
“I was going to pay you back.””
“When?””
He opened his mouth, then shut it.
I held out my hand toward the counter. The jeweler slid my black card toward me, and I snatched it up before Daniel could touch it again.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You're making a scene over a necklace you could probably buy ten times over.””
I looked at her champagne dress, her diamond earrings, and the expensive handbag resting against the counter.
“Then you should have no trouble buying your own.””
Her face hardened.
Daniel leaned toward me, lowering his voice as though that somehow made his behavior less disgusting.
“Can we discuss this privately?””
“No.””
“Nia.””
“You wanted to use my money in public. We can discuss it in public.””
The boutique door opened behind us.
My father walked in.
Arthur Carter was sixty-two, impeccably dressed in a gray suit, with silver threading through his close-cropped hair. He carried a dark financial folder beneath one arm. Unlike Daniel, he never needed to raise his voice to make people listen.
His eyes moved from my face to the open jewelry case, then to Daniel.
He understood enough to stop walking.
“Nia,” he said calmly, “freeze every card. Now.””
Daniel's expression changed.
It was subtle at first. A tightening around the mouth. A flicker in his eyes. Then he took a quick step toward me.
“Arthur, let's not overreact.””
My father didn't even look at him.
“I'm speaking to my daughter.””
I pulled out my smartphone. My hands were trembling, but my fingers moved quickly across the banking app.
One account.
Two cards.
Three.
I froze each one.
A notification appeared.
*CARD ACCESS SUSPENDED.*
Then another.
*AUTHORIZED USER: DANIEL.*
I stopped moving.
Daniel had been an authorized user on one of my accounts for emergencies. I had added him eighteen months earlier, when we began planning our future together.
I had trusted him with the kind of access that came from believing a person would never deliberately hurt you.
I looked up.
“How many accounts did you use?””
Daniel stared at my phone.
“It's not what you think.””
“Then tell me what it is.””
He said nothing.
Arthur placed the financial folder on the marble counter. Its edge landed beside the closed jewelry box.
“This is bigger than the necklace,” he said.
I looked at my father.
“What does that mean?””
He opened the folder and removed an official bank document.
For the first time since entering the boutique, his calm expression shifted. Not into panic. Into something colder.
He handed me the paper.
I scanned the first paragraph, then the account information beneath it.
My breath caught.
Daniel began backing away from the counter.
Vanessa's smug expression disappeared.
At the bottom of the document, a figure sat in bold black print.
*HOME EQUITY LOAN — $310,000.*
*BORROWER: NIA CARTER.*
*SIGNATURE: NIA CARTER.*
I stared at the signature.
It carried my name.
My full name.
But I had never signed that document.
I lifted my eyes toward Daniel.
“I never signed this.””
He went completely pale.
And my father, standing beside me with one hand resting on the financial folder, said nothing at all.
That silence frightened me more than Daniel's face.
Because Arthur had not come to the boutique to stop a man from buying a necklace.
May you like
He had come because someone had put my home, my money, and my future at risk.
And the document in my hands was only the first thing I was about to discover.
