Chapter 4: The Man Who Came Back

The next morning, my father received a phone call that changed everything.

I knew something was wrong before he even answered.

My father was usually calm.

Even when life was falling apart, he moved like someone carrying heavy furniture.

Slow.

Careful.

Controlled.

But that morning, his face changed after three words.

“Calvin Brooks?””

I stopped pouring my cereal.

Jordan, sitting across the table, looked up immediately.

My father listened for another minute.

Then he said:

“Send me everything.””

He hung up.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“Was that him?””

My father nodded.

“Not exactly.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Calvin has been hiding.””

Jordan looked confused.

“I thought he was gone.””

My father sat down.

“That’s what Monique wanted everybody to believe.””

He opened his laptop.

“The bank flagged the transfer because of the amount and because the recipient information didn’t match the story we were given.””

He clicked through several documents.

“Calvin Brooks owns a small company two cities away.””

Jordan frowned.

“He owns a company?””

My father nodded.

“Apparently, he has for years.””

That was another piece of the lie.

Monique didn’t marry a womanizer who abandoned his child.

She married a story.

A story Calvin and Monique had created.

My father continued.

“Your stepmother told me Calvin had no contact with Jordan. She said he was struggling and unreachable.””

Jordan looked hurt.

“So she lied about my dad?””

My father didn’t answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

And sometimes complicated truths hurt the most.

That afternoon, my father’s attorney came to the house.

Her name was Denise Walker.

She was a sharp woman with silver glasses and a voice that made every word sound important.

She reviewed the documents.

Then she looked at me.

“Nia, I want you to understand something.””

I nodded.

“Your mother was very thorough.””

A small smile crossed my face.

“That sounds like her.””

“It does.””

Denise tapped the papers.

“The account had protections because your mother knew you were young and wanted to make sure no one could pressure you into giving away your future.””

I looked down.

“She really thought of everything.””

“She did.””

Denise paused.

“But someone else thought of everything too.””

I looked up.

“What do you mean?””

She pointed to the transfer records.

“These attempts started before Monique married your father.””

The room went silent.

“She was planning this before she became family.””

Those words hurt differently.

Because they meant the hugs were fake.

The birthday wishes were fake.

The family dinners were just a performance.

My father leaned back.

“Can we prove it?””

Denise nodded.

“We already have evidence.””

She showed us copies of the forged documents.

“The signature matches poorly. The dates also show preparation before the marriage. This wasn’t a mistake.””

Jordan looked sick.

“My mom did all this.””

Denise looked at him gently.

“Jordan, adults make their own choices. You are not responsible for hers.””

He nodded slowly.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me not to.

I answered.

“Hello?””

At first, there was silence.

Then a man spoke.

“Nia Carter?””

My body went still.

“Who is this?””

“My name is Calvin Brooks.””

Jordan stood up.

My father looked at me.

Calvin continued.

“I think we need to talk.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“You mean about the fifty thousand dollars you took?””

Silence.

Then he sighed.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

I almost laughed.

Everybody said that.

Everybody who got caught.

My father motioned for me to put it on speaker.

I did.

Calvin’s voice filled the room.

“Monique told me the money was hers.””

Jordan closed his eyes.

My father looked furious.

I spoke slowly.

“She lied to you.””

Another silence.

Then Calvin said something that made all of us freeze.

“She lied to me too.””

Nobody moved.

Because for the first time, there was another possibility.

Maybe Calvin wasn’t just the person who took the money.

Maybe he was another piece of a much bigger plan.

May you like

And if he was telling the truth, then Monique had been hiding something from everyone.

Including him.
