Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the Debt
Nobody spoke after Ethan said those words.
The money was never the goal.
I replayed the sentence in my head.
Because somehow, that was worse.
Losing money was something you could understand.
A bad decision.
A mistake.
A terrible choice.
But this?
This meant there had been something else happening behind everything.
Something we didn’t know.
My father held the phone tighter.
“What was the goal?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
My mother whispered.
“Please don’t.””
My father looked at her.
“No.””
His eyes stayed on the phone.
“I need the truth.””
Ethan sighed.
“Claire didn’t tell you about the business she was trying to start?””
My father looked confused.
“What business?””
My mother closed her eyes.
I felt my heart sink.
Another secret.
Another thing hidden.
Ethan continued.
“She was planning to open a financial consulting company.””
My father looked at my mother.
“You?””
She looked embarrassed.
“I wanted to do something for myself.””
“And you couldn’t tell me?””
“I wanted to surprise you.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You wanted to prove something.””
My mother didn’t answer.
Because again, he was right.
Ethan continued.
“She believed she could build something big.””
My father laughed.
“She took my daughter’s education money to build a company?””
“I didn’t know about the daughter’s money,” Ethan said.
My father paused.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“I believe him on that part.””
Everyone looked at Marcus.
He continued.
“The transfers connected to Ethan’s account were made after the initial agreement. He did not receive the full ninety-two thousand.””
My father looked at him.
“Then where did it go?””
That was the question.
The one nobody had answered.
Not completely.
My mother looked at the floor.
“I moved it.””
“Where?””
She didn’t speak.
“Maya.””
My voice surprised even me.
My mother looked up.
“Where did my money go?””
Her eyes filled.
And I hated that part of me still wanted to comfort her.
Because she was my mother.
Because love doesn’t disappear just because someone hurts you.
“I paid people.””
My father frowned.
“What people?””
“Consultants.””
“For what?””
“The company.””
I stared at her.
“You spent my college money on a company that doesn’t exist?””
“It was going to exist.””
My father shook his head.
“Claire.””
“I was close.””
“Close to what?””
She looked at him.
“Making something that would change everything.””
Nobody answered.
Because there was something heartbreaking about that.
My mother wasn’t trying to hurt us.
She was chasing a dream.
But dreams become dangerous when people sacrifice someone else’s future to pay for them.
Ethan’s voice came through the phone again.
“Claire.””
She looked at the screen.
“You need to tell them the rest.””
My mother went still.
“What rest?””
My father asked.
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
She covered her mouth.
“There’s another account.””
The room became silent.
My father stared.
“What?””
“I opened another account.””
“With what money?””
She didn’t answer.
He already knew.
“No.””
My mother started crying.
“No, Daniel.””
“Did you use Maya’s name again?””
“No.””
“Then whose?””
She looked at Brooke.
Brooke stepped back.
“What?””
My mother whispered.
“I used mine.””
My father looked confused.
“Your name?””
“Yes.””
“Then what’s the problem?””
My mother’s voice broke.
“I wasn’t alone on the account.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who was with you?””
Nobody needed to ask.
Because my mother was already looking at the phone.
At Ethan.
The silence answered.
My father slowly lowered the phone.
“You and him.””
My mother couldn’t deny it.
“I needed help.””
“You opened a secret account with another man?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it?””
My mother cried.
“It was business.””
My father looked away.
Maybe because he didn’t want her to see how much that hurt.
Maybe because he already knew the answer.
Then Ethan spoke.
“I’m not the person you should be angry with.””
My father grabbed the phone again.
“You called my wife.””
“You’re angry because you think this started with me.””
“Didn’t it?””
“No.””
Ethan’s voice became serious.
“This started years ago.””
Everyone froze.
My father stared at the phone.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan said nothing for several seconds.
Then:
“Ask Claire why she never told you about the money she inherited.””
My mother’s face changed.
And I knew.
There was another secret.
One she had buried so deep that even my father didn’t know it existed.
My father looked at her.
“What inheritance?””
My mother looked like she wanted the ground to open beneath her.
Because after everything we had already discovered…
There was still one more thing.
May you like
And this time, it wasn’t about debt.
It was about the past.
