The Bag That Wasn’t Hers / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10: The Truth About Jasmine

Andre stared at the photograph on his phone.

A newborn baby.

A hospital bracelet.

A date nine years earlier.

And the name beneath it:

*JASMINE BROOKS.*

His stomach dropped.

“No.””

Monica covered her mouth.

Tasha whispered, “What does it say?””

Andre turned the screen toward her.

Tasha read the message.

*ASK YOUR MOTHER WHY SHE CHANGED THE BABY'S NAME.*

Andre looked at his wife.

“You knew.””

Monica shook her head violently.

“No. I swear to you, I didn't know that.””

“You knew enough to bring Jasmine here six months ago.””

“That was different.””

“How?””

Monica stepped closer.

“Because I was trying to find out the truth.””

“And you never thought I deserved to know?””

“I was terrified.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Jasmine.

“Of losing her.””

Andre's anger faltered.

“Why would you lose her?””

Monica began crying.

“Because she wasn't supposed to leave that hospital with us.””

The room went silent.

Andre stared at her.

“What?””

Monica wiped her face.

“When Jasmine was born, there was a complication. Your mother was there.””

“My mother wasn't at the hospital.””

“She was.””

Andre shook his head.

“No. She came the next morning.””

“She told you that.””

Andre looked at Monica.

“What are you saying?””

Monica took a breath.

“Your mother arrived before Jasmine was born.””

Andre's face hardened.

“Why?””

“Because she knew something about your family that you didn't.””

He glanced at Whitmore.

The doctor was no longer smiling.

Andre pointed at him.

“You know what she's talking about.””

Whitmore lowered his eyes.

Monica continued.

“Your mother had access to the maternity records. She knew there was another baby born that same night.””

Andre froze.

“Another baby?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“In the room next to mine.””

Andre looked at Jasmine.

Monica's voice trembled.

“The babies were switched.””

Jasmine's eyes widened.

Andre stared at his daughter.

“No.””

Tasha whispered, “Mrs. Hayes…”

Monica shook her head.

“I found the original record six months ago.””

She pulled a folded document from her purse.

Andre took it.

At the top was a date.

Nine years earlier.

Two names appeared beneath it.

*MOTHER: MONICA HAYES*

*INFANT: FEMALE — BABY GIRL*

But beside the infant's name was another handwritten note.

*IDENTITY TRANSFERRED.*

Andre looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Monica whispered:

“Your mother changed the baby's identity.””

Andre's hands shook.

“Why?””

Whitmore finally spoke.

“Because the other baby's family was dangerous.””

Andre turned.

“What family?””

Whitmore stared at Jasmine.

“The Brooks family.””

Andre looked at Calvin.

Calvin went pale.

“My family?””

Whitmore nodded.

“Your father and Calvin's father were business partners.””

Calvin shook his head.

“That doesn't explain anything.””

“It explains everything.””

Whitmore continued.

“Your father discovered financial fraud inside the company. He threatened to expose it.””

Calvin's face tightened.

“And?””

“Someone ordered him killed.””

Andre stared.

“Who?””

Whitmore looked toward Monica.

“She knows.””

Monica shook her head.

“No.””

“You know exactly who.””

Andre turned to her.

“Tell me.””

Monica's voice broke.

“Your mother.””

Andre stopped.

“My mother?””

“She was involved.””

Calvin stepped forward.

“That can't be true.””

“She helped cover it up,” Monica said.

“And when she discovered that the Brooks family had a newborn daughter, she used that baby to protect Jasmine.””

Andre frowned.

“Protect her from what?””

“The people who wanted the Brooks family erased.””

Calvin stared at Jasmine.

“So she's…”

Monica nodded.

“She's my daughter.””

Calvin's eyes widened.

“No.””

Monica looked at him.

“The baby we thought was ours…”

Calvin whispered, “That's impossible.””

Tasha looked between them.

“Then whose child is Jasmine?””

Monica's tears fell.

“Mine.””

Andre stared.

His entire world seemed to collapse into one impossible sentence.

“But you said—”

“I lied.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother threatened me.””

Andre's voice cracked.

“What did she threaten?””

“She said if I told you, she'd make Jasmine disappear.””

Andre closed his eyes.

All the strange details suddenly connected.

The hidden bottle.

The altered records.

The secret blood test.

The missing sample.

The messages.

The people watching the hospital.

His mother had not been protecting Jasmine.

She had been protecting the secret.

Andre looked at Jasmine.

She was watching him.

“Dad?””

He walked toward her.

Slowly.

He sat beside the bed.

Jasmine reached for his hand.

Andre held it.

“Whatever anyone says,” he whispered, “you are my daughter.””

She began crying.

“Even if I'm not?””

Andre's eyes filled.

“Especially then.””

Jasmine leaned into him.

Andre wrapped his arms around her.

Behind them, Monica broke down.

Calvin looked at her.

“You should have told him.””

“I know.””

“You let all of us live inside a lie.””

“I know.””

Whitmore suddenly moved.

Security grabbed him.

He struggled.

“You don't understand!”” he shouted.

“Evelyn will destroy all of you!””

Andre turned.

“Where is my mother?””

Whitmore stopped fighting.

His eyes shifted toward the hallway.

A woman's voice came from outside.

“You really should have asked me yourself.””

Andre froze.

Everyone turned.

An elderly Black woman stood in the doorway.

Gray streaks ran through her dark hair.

A small scar crossed her eyebrow.

Tasha recognized her immediately.

“That's her.””

Evelyn Hayes looked at Andre.

“Hello, son.””

Andre stared at the woman who had raised him.

“You're alive.””

She smiled faintly.

“Of course.””

“You've been watching Jasmine.””

“I've been protecting her.””

“No.””

Andre stepped forward.

“You stole her identity.””

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“I saved her life.””

“You lied to me.””

“I saved you too.””

“You changed my daughter's name.””

Evelyn looked at Jasmine.

“She was never supposed to be yours.””

Andre's face tightened.

“She's mine.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Biologically?””

She pointed toward the document.

“No.””

Andre didn't flinch.

“She doesn't have to be.””

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“You don't understand what happens when the truth gets out.””

Andre looked at Calvin.

Then Monica.

Then Jasmine.

“I understand enough.””

Evelyn reached into her coat.

Security immediately raised their hands.

“Stop!””

She pulled out a small envelope.

Not a weapon.

She placed it on the floor.

“This is the original birth record.””

Andre stared at it.

Evelyn continued.

“And the final paternity test.””

Monica whispered, “You kept it?””

“I kept everything.””

Andre picked up the envelope.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

He read the birth record first.

Then the paternity report.

His eyes stopped.

The room became completely silent.

Calvin stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Andre looked at Jasmine.

Then at Monica.

His eyes filled with tears.

He finally understood.

The first test had been manipulated.

The second sample had been switched.

But the original record told the truth.

Jasmine was not the biological daughter of Andre or Monica.

She was Calvin's biological daughter.

And Monica had known the entire time.

Andre looked at Calvin.

Calvin was crying.

“My daughter?””

Monica nodded.

“Yes.””

Calvin covered his face.

Andre walked toward him.

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then Andre held out the paternity report.

“She needs you.””

Calvin looked at Jasmine.

Jasmine looked back.

Andre continued:

“But she still has me.””

Calvin nodded through tears.

“I know.””

Andre turned toward Evelyn.

“You spent nine years deciding who deserved to know the truth.””

Evelyn said nothing.

Andre looked at Jasmine.

“She gets to decide now.””

Jasmine reached for him.

Andre took her hand.

And for the first time that day, nobody tried to hide the truth from her.

The hospital room became quiet.

Not because the mystery remained unsolved.

But because it finally had an answer.

Jasmine had been given the wrong name.

The wrong records.

The wrong story.

But she had never been given the wrong father.

Andre knelt beside her.

“Ready to go home?””

Jasmine nodded.

“With you?””

Andre smiled through his tears.

“With me.””

She squeezed his hand.

“Okay.””

And when they walked out of the examination room, Andre left the prescription bottle, the altered records, and every secret behind.

But he kept one thing.

The red backpack.

May you like

Because inside it had been the truth.

And because sometimes the smallest person in a family is the one brave enough to carry it.
