Chapter 4: The Sister Who Came Back from the Dead

“Daniel, get down!””

Grace’s voice cracked through the rain.

I dropped instinctively as a gunshot exploded behind me. The bullet struck the metal gate, sending a sharp metallic shriek through the storage facility entrance.

The man in the blue coat staggered backward.

Grace fired again.

He stumbled into the shadows, clutching his shoulder, then disappeared between two rows of warehouses.

“Damn it!”” Grace shouted.

She ran toward us, her bloodstained scarf trailing behind her. Her hair was shorter than I remembered, streaked with gray at the temples. A deep scar ran from her left ear to her jaw, and her face had the hollow, exhausted look of someone who had spent years sleeping with one eye open.

But her eyes were unmistakably hers.

My little sister.

The girl who used to steal my car keys and blame our golden retriever.

The woman I'd buried seven years ago.

“Grace?””

She stopped three feet away from me.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then I grabbed her shoulders.

“You're alive.””

Her face crumpled.

“Yes.””

I pulled her into my arms so tightly she gasped. She smelled of rain, cold air, and antiseptic. I felt the bones beneath her coat, and suddenly I was twenty-nine again, standing beside a hospital bed while a doctor told me there was nothing left to save.

I pushed her away just enough to look at her.

“Why didn't you come home?””

Grace swallowed.

“Because Vanessa would have killed me.””

“She's my wife.””

“I know who she is, Daniel.””

“Then explain what the hell happened!””

Ethan flinched at my raised voice.

I immediately lowered it.

Grace noticed the boy standing beside Marcus. Her expression changed when she saw the teddy bear.

“Lily's son?””

Ethan nodded.

“Where's my mom?””

Grace looked away.

That tiny movement frightened me more than the gunfire.

“Grace,” I said, “where is Lily?””

She rubbed a trembling hand over her mouth.

“I don't know.””

Ethan stepped toward her.

“You promised my mom you'd protect me.””

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

“I did, sweetheart. I swear I did.””

“Then why did those men follow me?””

“Because I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Grace knelt in front of him.

“I trusted someone I shouldn't have trusted.””

Ethan backed away.

“My mom said grown-ups always say that when they want you to forgive them.””

Grace closed her eyes.

For several seconds, the only sound was the rain striking the warehouse roof.

Then Marcus interrupted.

“We need to leave. The shooter may have backup, and the police are probably on their way.””

Grace stood.

“Your security chief is right.””

I stared at her.

“You don't get to appear out of nowhere, fire a gun beside me, and then tell me to leave without explaining anything.””

“Would you prefer I explain while another bullet goes through your head?””

“Grace!””

She grabbed my arm.

“Vanessa knows you're looking for answers. She knows about the bear. She knows about Unit 317. And if she's learned that I'm alive, she'll come after everyone you love.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Then we protect him.””

Grace nodded.

“And Lily?””

Her silence was answer enough.

I felt something inside me turn hard.

“Tell me everything.””

Grace glanced toward the street, where a pair of headlights had appeared beyond the gate.

“Not here.””

She led us to a battered gray sedan parked behind a neighboring warehouse. Marcus checked the vehicle before allowing us inside. Grace sat in the passenger seat while I squeezed into the back beside Ethan.

As we pulled onto the road, I kept my eyes on my sister.

“Start with the accident.””

Grace stared through the windshield.

“Vanessa was in the car with me that night. We were arguing because I'd discovered she'd been moving money through shell companies connected to Hayes Global.””

“How much money?””

“Thirty-two million dollars.””

I stared at her.

“That money was supposed to fund our medical research division.””

“It did fund the division. Briefly. Then it was redirected into accounts controlled by Vanessa's associates.””

Marcus glanced at her in the rearview mirror.

“Do you have proof?””

“I did. Lily had the original records.””

“Why was Lily involved?””

“Because she discovered the transfers while reconciling the company's accounts. She came to me after she found evidence that Vanessa had been falsifying Daniel's signature.””

My stomach tightened.

“And you didn't tell me?””

“I tried.””

Grace turned to face me.

“You remember the night I came to your apartment and asked to speak with you privately?””

I remembered.

I'd been preparing for a business dinner with Vanessa. Grace had arrived pale and furious, demanding that I postpone the wedding.

I'd told her she was being paranoid.

I'd accused her of resenting my happiness.

“You said you had proof,” I whispered.

“I had a folder. Vanessa stole it before I could show you.””

I looked down at my hands.

Grace continued.

“She followed me that night. She was in the passenger seat when I lost control of the car. She grabbed the steering wheel and pulled it toward the guardrail.””

My breath caught.

“The police report said you were alone.””

“Vanessa made sure of that. She paid a paramedic to remove her name from the initial report. Then she used her injuries to explain why she disappeared from public view for several weeks.””

I remembered those weeks.

Vanessa had told everyone she'd been visiting her sick aunt in Connecticut.

I'd believed her.

“Why didn't you go to the police?””

“I did. The first detective assigned to the case took my statement. Two days later, he was found dead in his apartment.””

No one spoke.

Grace rubbed her scar.

“After that, I knew Vanessa had people everywhere. She had money, political connections, and access to the company's security systems. I couldn't trust anyone.””

“So you let me bury you?””

Her eyes shone.

“I watched your funeral from a car across the street.””

I turned toward the window because I couldn't bear to look at her.

“You let me mourn you.””

“I know.””

“You let me spend seven years believing I was the last member of my family.””

“I know, Daniel.””

“Do you?””

My voice broke on the last word.

Grace reached for my hand, but I pulled away.

She let it fall into her lap.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Did you know my mom was pregnant?””

Grace turned toward him.

“Yes.””

“Did you know who my dad was?””

She looked at me.

“I knew who Lily loved.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

The boy's voice was quiet, but it carried an authority no eight-year-old should have needed to develop.

Grace took a breath.

“Yes, Ethan. I knew.””

I leaned forward.

“Then tell me.””

Grace looked at the road ahead.

“Lily was pregnant before she disappeared. She told me she was going to tell you after the company investigation was over. She wanted you to know the truth before she brought a child into a world controlled by Vanessa.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because Vanessa threatened to have her arrested for theft. She told Lily that if she came near you, she'd make sure your child grew up believing his mother was a criminal.””

I looked at Ethan.

He was watching me carefully, as though waiting for me to reject him.

I put an arm around his shoulders.

“I'm not going anywhere.””

He leaned against me, but his fingers remained clenched around the bear.

Grace watched us in the rearview mirror.

“There's something else,” she said.

I waited.

“Vanessa didn't just want the money. She wanted control of Hayes Global. She needed you alive long enough to sign a new set of voting agreements, but she needed Lily gone because Lily could prove the signatures were forged.””

“And the accident?””

“Vanessa planned to kill both of us. I survived. Lily escaped. But Vanessa told everyone Lily had died in a fire at a safe house.””

“Did she?””

Grace's jaw tightened.

“I don't know. The last time I spoke to her, she was hiding in Pennsylvania. She said she had evidence that could destroy Vanessa, but she refused to tell me where she was going.””

Ethan suddenly sat upright.

“Mom told me something before she left.””

We all turned toward him.

“She said if Aunt Grace ever came back, I should ask her about the red door.””

Grace went white.

Her hands tightened around the steering wheel so hard her knuckles blanched.

“Where did you hear that?””

“Mom told me. She said the red door was where everything started.””

Grace stared at him.

Then she pulled the car sharply onto the shoulder.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “we have a serious problem.””

“What?””

She looked at me with naked fear.

“The red door isn't a place where Lily hid evidence.””

She reached into her coat and pulled out an old photograph.

It showed the front entrance of my childhood home.

Our father's house.

The one that had burned down twenty years earlier, killing our father and leaving our family scattered.

The front door was painted red.

Grace turned the photograph over.

May you like

On the back, in our father's handwriting, were seven words.

If Vanessa finds this, we're already dead.
