Chapter 9: The Doctor Who Knew Everything

For six years, I trusted Dr. Ethan Cole with my daughter’s life.

Six years of appointments.

Six years of treatments.

Six years of sitting across from him in hospitals while he looked me in the eyes and promised he was doing everything possible.

He was the man who held Lily’s medical records.

The man who explained her symptoms.

The man who told me to accept that some things could not be fixed.

And now he stood inside a hidden underground laboratory beneath an abandoned research facility, smiling as if he had been waiting for me to discover him.

“I’m the reason she can walk tonight.””

The words echoed through the darkness.

I felt my hands turn cold.

Noah stepped closer to me.

“You.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Hello, Noah.””

The way he said the boy’s name made my stomach turn.

Not like he was meeting someone.

Like he was recognizing a file.

A number.

A memory.

“You know him,” I said.

Ethan looked at me.

“I know everyone involved in this.””

My anger rose.

“Everyone?””

He nodded.

“Everyone.””

I stepped forward.

“You treated my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“You knew what happened.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

I expected denial.

A lie.

An excuse.

Instead, he simply admitted it.

And somehow that made it worse.

“How long?””

Ethan looked around the laboratory.

“The entire time.””

The words hit me.

The entire time.

While I sat beside Lily’s hospital bed.

While I searched for answers.

While I begged doctors to help her.

He knew.

I felt something inside me break.

“You watched me suffer.””

His expression changed slightly.

“I watched you fight.””

“No.””

My voice echoed.

“You watched me fail.””

Ethan looked down.

“I watched Thomas manipulate everyone.””

I shook my head.

“You were one of everyone.””

Silence.

That was enough.

Because he knew I was right.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Ethan, this has gone too far.””

He looked at her.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Her face tightened.

“I tried to stop it.””

“Years too late.””

Noah looked between them.

“You both knew.””

Neither answered.

And that was the answer.

My chest tightened.

All these people.

All these adults.

And my daughter was the one who paid the price.

I looked at Ethan.

“Tell me why.””

He sighed.

Then he walked toward the computers.

“Because Thomas was close.””

“Close to what?””

“Finding a cure.””

I stared at him.

“You’re still defending him?””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“I’m explaining him.””

He touched one of the screens.

A medical file appeared.

Lily’s name.

Again.

Always Lily.

“Thomas discovered something important.””

I looked at the screen.

“What?””

“That the nervous system can rebuild itself.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not worth destroying children.””

Ethan looked at me.

“No.””

He paused.

“It isn’t.””

For a second, I thought I saw regret.

Real regret.

Then he continued.

“But it happened.””

The coldness of his words made me sick.

“You talk about my daughter like she was a result.””

Ethan looked away.

“Because Thomas made her one.””

Noah stepped forward.

“You helped him.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Yes.””

The boy’s eyes filled with anger.

“My mother trusted you.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“You lied to her.””

“Yes.””

“You let her die.””

The room became silent.

Ethan had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

I looked at him.

“What happened to Sarah?””

His face changed.

“She found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That Thomas wasn’t trying to cure Lily anymore.””

I frowned.

“What was he doing?””

Ethan looked at the screen.

“Selling it.””

The answer was worse than I expected.

“Selling?””

“To pharmaceutical companies.””

My stomach turned.

“He wanted to create a treatment.””

Ethan nodded.

“But he needed proof.””

“And Lily was proof.””

“Yes.””

Noah looked at Lily’s file.

“He hurt her to make money.””

Ethan didn’t respond.

He didn’t have to.

I walked toward him.

“Why did you make her walk tonight?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because I had to.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas was going to destroy everything.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“Explain.””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he opened another file.

A recording appeared.

Thomas.

Again.

But this time, he wasn’t calm.

He was angry.

“He knows too much.””

Thomas’s voice filled the room.

Ethan froze.

The recording continued.

“Daniel cannot find the original data.””

A second voice answered.

Ethan.

My heart sank.

The conversation was between them.

Years earlier.

Thomas said:

“If Daniel discovers the truth, everything ends.””

Ethan replied:

“What about the children?””

Thomas laughed.

“They were always part of the process.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Because now I knew.

Ethan wasn’t innocent.

But he wasn’t the same as Thomas.

He had been part of the machine.

Then he had tried to break it.

Too late.

Still too late.

I looked at him.

“You activated Lily’s treatment because you knew we were coming.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew Noah would find me.””

“Yes.””

“You wanted me here.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked at the hidden laboratory.

“Because there is one thing Thomas never knew.””

“What?””

Ethan walked to the far wall.

He opened a locked drawer.

Inside was a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Daniel.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

“Emily gave it to me.””

The room froze.

“No.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew Emily?””

“I was her doctor.””

I felt dizzy.

Another person.

Another secret.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Emily asked me not to.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

And my daughter had lost years because everyone decided they knew better.

“Open it.””

Ethan handed me the envelope.

My fingers trembled.

Inside was a letter.

Emily’s handwriting.

The first words almost broke me.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect our family.

I closed my eyes.

Noah looked away.

Lily wasn’t here.

And maybe that was better.

The letter continued.

I know you will be angry. You will want answers. You will want someone to blame.

A tear fell onto the paper.

But please remember one thing.

Lily was never weak.

She was never broken.

Someone tried to convince us she was.

But she wasn’t.

I kept reading.

Thomas will tell you many things.

He will make you doubt everyone.

He will make you believe the people who tried to help you were your enemies.

Then came the sentence that made me stop.

Because it answered the question that had haunted me all night.

Daniel, Noah is not Thomas’s victim.

He is Thomas’s greatest mistake.

I looked up.

Noah.

Ethan watched me.

I did.

The final paragraph was shorter.

And more terrifying.

Thomas thought he created two miracles.

He was wrong.

He created two witnesses.

Lily.

And Noah.

The people who would one day expose him.

My hands shook.

Then the lights above us flickered.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Heavy.

Slow.

Someone was approaching.

Ethan looked toward the door.

His face changed.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He whispered:

“He wasn’t supposed to find this place.””

The door opened.

A figure stepped into the laboratory.

Thomas.

But he wasn’t alone.

Behind him were two security guards.

And in his hand…

Was a remote control.

He smiled.

“You really thought I would leave my biggest secret unprotected?””

My blood ran cold.

Thomas looked at Lily’s file on the screen.

Then at Noah.

Then at me.

“I gave you all night to understand.””

He pressed a button.

Every screen in the laboratory turned on.

A countdown appeared.

00:05:00

Victoria stepped back.

“What did you do?””

Thomas smiled.

“I’m erasing everything.””

The countdown continued.

00:04:59.

Thomas looked at me.

“Six years ago, I took away Lily’s ability to walk.””

He smiled.

“But tonight…”

He looked at Noah.

“I’m taking away the only people who can prove it.””

The timer dropped.

00:04:50.

And for the first time that night…

May you like

I wasn’t afraid of the truth.

I was afraid we wouldn’t survive long enough to reveal it.
