Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The stranger’s voice carried across the toy store.

Not loud.

Not aggressive.

Just confident.

Like someone who knew he held the missing piece of a broken story.

Nia looked at me.

“Who is he?””

I didn’t answer.

And my silence answered for me.

She stepped back.

“You know him.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The man walked closer.

His eyes never left mine.

“Hello, Bear.””

I hadn’t heard that voice in years.

Not since the night everything fell apart.

“Darius.””

Nia looked between us.

“Darius?””

The man smiled sadly.

“I’m the person your father never wanted you to meet.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t call me that.””

He stopped.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t get to rewrite history.””

Darius looked at Nia.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“She has your anger.””

Nia frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Bear spent twenty-seven years protecting people who never protected him.””

I stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Darius held up his hands.

“I came here because she deserves the truth.””

Nia crossed her arms.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Her voice shook.

“But somehow nobody actually says anything.””

Darius looked at her.

“Your mother didn’t just separate you from Bear.””

He paused.

“She changed your entire identity.””

Nia looked confused.

“My identity?””

Darius nodded.

“She made you believe your family was smaller than it really was.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

“Yes, I do.””

He pulled out a small envelope.

My heart sank.

Because I recognized it.

Nia saw my reaction.

“What is that?””

Darius placed it on the counter.

“Something Bear kept hidden.””

Her eyes went to me.

“Is that true?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Because some secrets aren’t hidden to hurt people.

Some are hidden because you don’t know how to survive after revealing them.

I looked at the envelope.

“That belongs to you.””

Nia opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

An old letter.

She unfolded it.

Her eyes scanned the first line.

Then she looked up.

“Who wrote this?””

I didn’t answer.

She looked back down.

Then her face changed.

“Grandmother?””

The word surprised everyone.

Her mother covered her mouth.

Nia looked at me.

“I had a grandmother?””

I nodded.

“Your mother’s mother.””

“And she knew you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why don’t I know her?””

I looked at Darius.

He answered.

“Because she tried to tell Nia’s mother the truth.””

Nia’s eyes narrowed.

“What truth?””

Darius looked at me.

The moment I had feared arrived.

“Your grandmother discovered that Bear wasn’t the only person your mother was lying to.””

Her mother whispered:

“Stop.””

Darius ignored her.

“She found out someone had been manipulating the situation from the beginning.””

Nia looked around.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then her eyes landed on me.

“Bear.””

I closed my eyes.

Because there was no way around it anymore.

“There was someone else.””

“Who?””

I took a breath.

“Your mother’s brother.””

Nia frowned.

“My uncle?””

I nodded.

“He hated me.””

“Why?””

“Because he thought I was ruining his family.””

Darius added:

“He believed Bear didn’t belong with them.””

Nia looked confused.

“So he convinced my mother to leave?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Her face changed.

“Then what?””

I looked at the photograph.

The little girl holding the princess doll.

“The night your mother left, she didn’t leave because she stopped loving me.””

Nia held her breath.

“She left because someone threatened to take you away.””

Her mother began crying.

“I was scared.””

Nia looked at her.

“Who threatened you?””

The woman couldn’t answer.

I did.

“Your uncle.””

Silence.

Nia looked like the world had shifted beneath her feet.

“Why?””

I looked at Darius.

Because he knew the next part.

The part I never wanted her to hear.

Darius said:

“Because your uncle had a secret.””

Nia waited.

“He wasn’t trying to protect your mother.””

He looked at her.

“He was trying to hide what he had done.””

The store suddenly felt too small.

Nia whispered:

“What did he do?””

Darius opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Because his phone started ringing.

He looked down.

His face changed.

“What?””

Nia stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Darius turned the phone around.

A message appeared.

From the same unknown number.

*Stop telling her. Or she loses the last person she has left.*

Nia read it.

Her eyes widened.

“What does that mean?””

I felt cold.

Because I knew exactly what it meant.

Someone wasn’t just afraid of the truth.

Someone was willing to destroy anyone who revealed it.

And then my phone rang.

This time, I answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

An old voice.

A voice I never expected to hear again.

“Bear?””

My heart stopped.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“It’s Nia’s grandmother.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because her grandmother had been dead for twenty years.

May you like

Then the voice whispered:

“You have to tell her before he finds you.””
