Chapter 7: The Man My Mother Feared
The photograph slipped slightly in my hand.
Not because it was heavy.
Because the words on the back felt impossible.
*“Lena, if Daniel ever finds you… run.””*
My mother’s handwriting.
I knew it.
Even after twenty years.
The way the letters leaned slightly to the right.
The small curve she always made on the letter “L.””
I had seen that handwriting on birthday cards.
On grocery lists.
On the notes she left beside my bed when I was sick.
This wasn’t a stranger’s warning.
This was my mother begging me.
And she had written it about the man standing ten feet away from me.
Daniel Reed.
The man who had held my hand in an old photograph.
The man who was supposed to be my father.
The man everyone thought was dead.
“Why?””
My voice came out weak.
Daniel looked at me.
“Lena…”
“Why did my mother tell me to run from you?””
Nobody moved.
Marcus looked at Daniel with hatred.
Bear looked like he already knew the answer would hurt.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I was hoping you’d never see that.””
The words were familiar.
Too familiar.
Everyone in my life seemed to hope I never found the truth.
I folded the photograph.
“Stop saying that.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“Stop acting like hiding things from me was kindness.””
The three men stood silently.
“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””
My voice shook.
“But I was alone.””
The words finally broke free.
“I was alone when I got sick. Alone when I had nightmares. Alone when I wondered why my mother left. Alone when I looked at other kids with their fathers and wondered what was wrong with me.””
Marcus looked devastated.
Bear looked down.
Daniel didn’t move.
“And now all of you are standing here telling me you did it because you loved me.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Maybe you did.””
My eyes filled.
“But love that keeps secrets feels a lot like abandonment.””
Nobody had an answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
Daniel took a slow breath.
“You’re right.””
I hated that.
I hated that they all agreed.
It made my anger feel heavier.
“Then tell me.””
I looked directly at him.
“Tell me why my mother feared you.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then Bear.
Finally, he looked back at me.
“Because she thought I was responsible for what happened to your family.””
My heart sank.
“Were you?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared me.
“Daniel.””
His jaw tightened.
“No.””
The answer was firm.
“But I understand why she believed it.””
“Why?””
“Because I made mistakes.””
I waited.
“Twenty years ago, Marcus and I were trying to bring down Victor.””
I glanced at Marcus.
“Both of you?””
“Yes.””
Daniel nodded.
“We were close. Like brothers.””
The irony wasn’t lost on me.
Two men who called each other family.
Two men who destroyed my understanding of family.
“Then what happened?””
Daniel looked toward the road.
“Victor discovered our plan.””
“And?””
“He forced us to turn against each other.””
Marcus shook his head.
“He manipulated you.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You weren’t there.””
“I was there enough.””
The anger between them returned.
I stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Both stopped.
“I don’t care who hated who first.””
I held up the photograph.
“I care about what happened to my mother.””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Maria was brave.””
The way he said her name bothered me.
Not because he sounded cruel.
Because he sounded like someone who knew her deeply.
“She loved you more than anything.””
“Then why did she leave?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because she thought keeping you away from us was the only way to keep you alive.””
“Us?””
“Me. Marcus. Benjamin.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Victor wasn’t the only danger.””
The parking lot became silent again.
I already knew I wasn’t going to like what came next.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked at Bear.
“Tell her.””
Bear’s expression darkened.
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You owe her the truth.””
Bear stared at him.
Then slowly nodded.
“There was someone inside our group.””
My stomach tightened.
“Someone working for Victor?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Bear hesitated.
“Someone close.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You still don’t know?””
Bear’s eyes narrowed.
“I know enough.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You suspected everyone.””
The words hit Bear.
Because they were true.
“Except the person standing beside you.””
The air changed.
I looked between them.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Bear said:
“Daniel.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
Daniel didn’t react.
Like he expected it.
“You think Daniel betrayed you?””
Bear’s voice was quiet.
“I thought so.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s why Maria ran.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Because of you?””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Then why are you here?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because I need to fix what I broke.””
Before I could answer, a loud crash came from the street.
Everyone turned.
A motorcycle had fallen over near the entrance.
One of Bear’s men was on the ground.
Blood ran from his forehead.
The others rushed toward him.
Bear immediately moved.
“Stay here.””
“No.””
“Lena.””
“I’m done staying where people tell me.””
That surprised him.
For the first time, I saw something almost like pride in his eyes.
But it disappeared quickly.
Because another sound came.
A gunshot.
Not close.
But close enough.
Everyone froze.
Bear pushed me behind him.
Marcus moved beside him.
Daniel stepped forward.
Three men.
Three enemies.
Three possible betrayers.
Standing together.
Protecting me.
A strange thought crossed my mind.
Maybe the truth wasn’t that one of them was evil.
Maybe the truth was that all of them had failed me in different ways.
A black vehicle sped away at the end of the street.
Bear watched it disappear.
“They know.””
“Who?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“Whoever sent that message.””
My phone buzzed.
Everyone stopped.
Another unknown number.
I stared at the screen.
Nobody told me not to answer.
Nobody tried to take it away.
For once, they let me choose.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
An old recording.
My mother.
My breath caught.
“Lena, if you’re hearing this…”
Tears filled my eyes.
“Then I’m gone.””
Nobody spoke.
Not Bear.
Not Marcus.
Not Daniel.
Only my mother’s voice.
“I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
Then:
“The three men around you are all hiding something.””
I looked up.
All three men became still.
“Benjamin protected you.””
Bear closed his eyes.
“Marcus loved you.””
Marcus looked away.
“Daniel lied to you.””
Daniel’s face changed.
My mother continued.
“But only one of them knows why I disappeared.””
My heartbeat increased.
The recording crackled.
Then came the words that made every person around me freeze.
“Lena, do not trust the man who raised you.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then Marcus.
Then Bear.
The recording continued.
“Because the man you called your father…”
A pause.
A deep breath.
“…is the reason I had to leave you.””
The message ended.
Nobody moved.
The phone screen went dark.
And slowly…
all three men looked at each other.
Because they knew something I didn’t.
A truth that had been buried for twenty years.
Then Bear whispered:
“She wasn’t talking about Daniel.””
My blood turned cold.
“Then who was she talking about?””
Bear looked at me.
And for the first time…
he looked afraid of himself.
“Lena…”
He swallowed.
“The man who raised you wasn’t your father.””
May you like
A pause.
“He was me.””
