Chapter 5: The Reason He Came Back
The words on my mother’s letter blurred.
Not because I couldn’t read them.
Because my mind was fighting against them.
*Why he is coming back now.*
That sentence sat on the page like a warning.
Not why he came back.
Why he *is coming back.*
Present tense.
A plan.
A reason.
I looked up slowly.
Richard was standing near the doorway, his expensive suit perfectly pressed, his expression carefully controlled.
But I knew him differently now.
I knew the signs.
The way his fingers tightened when he was nervous.
The way his eyes moved when he was searching for an answer.
The way he avoided silence because silence gave other people room to think.
And right now, he looked like a man who was running out of places to hide.
“What does she mean?””
My voice was quiet.
Nobody answered.
I looked directly at Richard.
“What does my mother mean?””
He swallowed.
“Emma, your mother was angry.””
I stared at him.
“That’s your answer?””
“She said a lot of things when we separated.””
I looked back at the letter.
My mother had written this knowing I might read it one day.
Knowing I might need protection from the truth.
She wasn’t writing from anger.
She was writing from fear.
“No,” I whispered.
Richard frowned.
“No?””
“This isn’t about what she said when she was angry.””
I held up the letter.
“She wrote this because she knew something.””
David looked down.
James stayed silent beside me.
Richard took a step forward.
“Emma, please.””
The word surprised me.
Please.
I had spent years wanting to hear that from him.
Wanting him to ask for a chance.
Wanting him to admit he missed me.
But hearing it now felt empty.
“Please what?””
His expression softened.
“Don’t let one letter destroy our relationship.””
I almost smiled.
A painful smile.
“You mean the relationship we barely had?””
He flinched.
And for the first time, I didn’t feel guilty about it.
Richard lowered his voice.
“I made mistakes.””
“Yes.””
I nodded.
“You did.””
“I’m trying to fix them.””
“By sending me bills?””
His face tightened.
“I already explained that.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You explained the bill. You haven’t explained anything else.””
I looked down at the letter.
“Why did you really come back?””
Richard looked at the floor.
That was the moment I knew.
The moment I understood.
Because a person with nothing to hide answers quickly.
A person with nothing to lose tells the truth.
Richard needed time.
And time was exactly what he had always taken from me.
David stepped closer.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
He nodded toward the letter.
“Read it.””
So I did.
My mother’s handwriting filled the page.
*Emma,*
*If you are reading this, then the day I feared has arrived. Richard has found his way back to you.*
My fingers tightened.
*I don’t want you to hate him. Hate is a heavy thing to carry. But I also don’t want you to confuse his return with love.*
My eyes lifted.
Richard looked away.
*Your father was not absent because he didn’t know how to be a father. He was absent because he knew exactly what he was choosing.*
My breath caught.
I kept reading.
*After he left, he called me many times. He said he wanted to come back. He said he had changed.*
A small laugh escaped me.
Not because it was funny.
Because it sounded familiar.
How many times had Richard said those words?
How many times had I believed them?
*But every time he called, he asked about one thing before anything else.*
I paused.
My eyes moved lower.
*The money.*
The room became silent.
I looked up.
Richard immediately spoke.
“That’s not true.””
My mother’s words were still in my hands.
But he was already defending himself.
Before I even finished.
I looked at him.
“Why did she write that?””
“Because she misunderstood.””
“What did she misunderstand?””
He didn’t answer.
Again.
The silence.
The endless silence.
James spoke quietly.
“Richard…”
Richard turned toward him.
“Stay out of this.””
James shook his head.
“No. You came to me.””
I looked at James.
“You knew?””
He looked down.
“Not everything.””
“What did you know?””
James took a breath.
“He told me about your mother’s estate.””
My heart sank.
“He told me before I knew?””
James nodded.
“He said you would eventually inherit everything.””
Richard interrupted.
“I was explaining the situation.””
James looked at him.
“No. You were preparing me.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Careful.””
James stepped forward.
“No. You be careful.””
The room went quiet.
I had never seen James speak to anyone like that.
Not even during arguments.
He looked at Richard with disappointment.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
“You came to me before the wedding because you wanted access to something that belonged to Emma.””
Richard’s voice became sharper.
“That’s a ridiculous accusation.””
“Then why did you bring legal papers?””
Richard had no answer.
I looked back at the letter.
The next lines made my stomach twist.
*I found out Richard had debts. Serious ones.*
I stopped.
Richard’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
*He told me he was rebuilding his life. He told me he was starting over.*
My eyes moved.
*But what he didn’t tell me was that he had borrowed money from people who expected him to pay them back.*
I looked up.
“Is this true?””
Richard’s face turned cold.
“Your mother exaggerated everything.””
“Did you have debts?””
He didn’t answer.
David’s voice was low.
“Yes.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
David nodded.
“I found out after he left.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew all this time?””
“I knew some of it.””
“Some?””
David looked hurt.
“I didn’t want to put your mother’s pain on your shoulders.””
I looked down.
That was the difference between them.
David carried my pain so I wouldn’t have to.
Richard carried his secrets so he wouldn’t have to.
The realization hurt.
I kept reading.
*Emma, the reason I never told you this before is because I wanted you to have a childhood. I wanted you to believe in people. I didn’t want your first lesson about love to be that someone could leave you for convenience.*
My eyes filled.
My mother had protected my heart.
Even after she was gone.
The letter continued.
*But if Richard comes back when you are older, ask yourself one question:*
I swallowed.
*Why now?*
I lowered the paper.
The question hung in the room.
Why now?
Why after years?
Why after I built a life?
Why after I was about to marry?
Richard looked at me.
“Emma, I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
He took a breath.
“I had problems.””
“That’s not an explanation.””
“I was trying to survive.””
“You left me.””
“I was trying to rebuild.””
“You missed birthdays.””
“I know.””
“You missed graduations.””
“I know.””
“You missed every important moment.””
His eyes lowered.
“I know.””
The apology came too late.
And somehow, that made it hurt more.
I whispered:
“Then why come back now?””
Richard looked at me.
For a moment, I saw something almost honest.
Fear.
Then he said:
“Because I realized I made a mistake.””
I waited.
He continued.
“I wanted another chance.””
I stared at him.
“Another chance at what?””
He hesitated.
Then he said:
“At being your father.””
The answer should have moved me.
A part of me wanted it to.
The little girl inside me—the one who waited by the window—wanted to believe him.
But the woman standing in the wedding dress saw something different.
I looked at the letter again.
At my mother’s warning.
At the papers.
At the bill.
At everything.
“Then why did you need my inheritance agreement?””
Richard’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
A crack.
“The agreement wasn’t about money.””
James looked at him.
“Then what was it about?””
Richard didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Dad.””
The word came out accidentally.
Everyone froze.
Even me.
Because I hadn’t called him that in years.
Richard looked at me.
His eyes softened.
And for one brief second, I saw the father I had spent my life searching for.
Then my phone rang.
Everyone looked down.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
Older.
Shaking.
“Is this Emma Carter?””
“Yes.””
There was a pause.
Then:
“My name is Angela.””
My heart tightened.
“I knew your mother.””
I looked around the room.
Richard’s face changed the moment he heard the name.
He stepped backward.
“No.””
I stared at him.
The woman continued.
“Your mother asked me to wait until the right moment.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Wait for what?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“To tell you the truth about the day your father left.””
Richard whispered:
“Don’t listen to her.””
The woman heard him.
And her voice changed.
“You’re there, aren’t you?””
Nobody moved.
Then Angela said the words that made my blood turn cold.
“Emma, your father didn’t just leave your mother.””
A pause.
“He left because someone discovered what he had done.””
I looked at Richard.
“What did you do?””
May you like
For the first time…
he had no answer.
