Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Smile
Andrew Vaughn stood in the doorway with the confidence of a man who had never been told no.
That was the thing about him.
He didn’t walk into rooms.
He claimed them.
For months, I had watched him charm strangers with the same smile he was wearing now. The smile that made people believe he was kind. The smile that made everyone forget to look closer.
But Ethan looked closer.
And for the first time, Andrew seemed uncomfortable.
The hallway lights reflected off Andrew’s expensive watch as he adjusted his tuxedo jacket.
“Ethan,” he said smoothly.
“I think there’s been a misunderstanding.””
Ethan didn’t move.
“Has there?””
Andrew glanced at me.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
The warning.
The silent message hidden behind his calm expression.
You’re going to regret this.
My stomach twisted.
Ethan noticed.
His eyes followed mine.
And something in his expression changed.
He stepped between us.
Not dramatically.
Not like a hero from a movie.
Just one simple movement.
But it was enough.
Andrew’s smile faded.
“Interesting,” Andrew said.
“You seem very protective of your assistant.””
Ethan’s voice was cold.
“She’s not the problem here.””
Andrew laughed quietly.
“I never said she was.””
“You implied it.””
“I’m a doctor, Ethan. I deal with facts.””
I almost laughed.
Facts.
That word coming from him felt cruel.
Andrew had always been careful.
That was what made him dangerous.
He never left obvious evidence.
He never lost control in public.
He knew exactly how to appear reasonable.
How to make someone else look emotional.
Ethan stared at him.
“What happened to Ava?””
Andrew sighed.
The performance began.
“Ava has been under a lot of stress.””
My fingers curled around the fabric of my blouse.
There it was.
The first lie.
“She’s had difficulties adjusting,” Andrew continued.
“Working in your company, dealing with pressure, trying to keep up with expectations.””
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re avoiding the question.””
“No, I’m explaining the situation.””
“You didn’t answer me.””
Andrew looked disappointed.
Almost hurt.
It was the same expression he used whenever he wanted people to feel sorry for him.
“Ethan, you know me.””
“Yes,” Ethan replied.
“And you know my reputation.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“I know what people say about you.””
Andrew smiled slightly.
“Exactly.””
I stepped forward.
“No.””
Both men looked at me.
I swallowed.
“I’m done letting everyone talk about his reputation.””
Andrew’s face hardened.
“Ava.””
The way he said my name made my body react before my mind could stop it.
I stepped back.
Ethan saw.
That was when Andrew lost control.
Only for a moment.
Only a crack.
But it was there.
“You see?”” Andrew said softly.
“She’s confused.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Don’t.””
Andrew tilted his head.
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t stand there and pretend you’re helping her.””
A strange silence filled the hallway.
Behind Andrew, guests continued arriving.
People laughed.
Cameras flashed.
The world continued as if nothing was happening.
But inside that small hallway, everything had changed.
Andrew looked at Ethan.
“You’re making a serious accusation against a respected physician based on the word of someone who has been emotionally unstable.””
My heart sank.
Because I knew exactly what he was doing.
He was building the story before anyone else could.
Ethan’s face became unreadable.
“Emotionally unstable?””
Andrew nodded.
“Unfortunately, yes.””
I felt like I had been slapped.
Not because I believed him.
Because I knew how many times he had used those words.
How many times he had whispered them after hurting me.
You’re too sensitive.
You imagine things.
No one will believe you if you keep acting this way.
Ethan looked at me.
“Ava.””
I couldn’t speak.
Andrew noticed.
And that made him confident again.
“You care about her,” Andrew said.
“I understand that. But you need to be careful. You’re a businessman, not a therapist.””
Ethan took one slow step toward him.
“I don’t need to be a therapist to know when someone is lying.””
The smile disappeared from Andrew’s face.
For the first time, he looked like the man I knew.
The real one.
Cold.
Calculating.
Angry.
“You should be careful, Ethan.””
The warning was quiet.
Almost polite.
But everyone in that hallway understood it.
Ethan did too.
“What does that mean?””
Andrew straightened his cufflinks.
“It means powerful people have enemies.””
His eyes moved toward me.
“Sometimes those enemies know exactly what story to tell.””
My breathing stopped.
Ethan noticed where he was looking.
“Are you threatening her?””
Andrew laughed.
“Of course not.””
“You just implied she’s trying to hurt me.””
“I’m saying you should question everything.””
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“I am.””
A long pause.
Then Andrew smiled again.
“The gala is waiting.””
Nobody moved.
Andrew continued.
“I assume you still plan to introduce me as the foundation’s honored guest?””
That was the question.
The one that mattered.
Because Ethan’s foundation was built on trust.
Thousands of people were downstairs.
Doctors.
Donors.
Journalists.
Families who believed in him.
And Andrew knew exactly what position he held.
He thought Ethan couldn’t act.
He thought reputation mattered more than truth.
Ethan looked toward the ballroom.
Then back at Andrew.
“I haven’t decided.””
Andrew’s eyes narrowed.
“You would cancel the entire ceremony because of this?””
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Because of what happened to Ava.””
Something broke inside me.
Not because he promised revenge.
Not because he promised to destroy Andrew.
Because he said my name.
Like I mattered.
Andrew noticed too.
And I saw anger flash across his face.
“You’re making an emotional decision.””
Ethan didn’t respond.
Andrew walked closer.
“Think carefully.””
Ethan didn’t move.
“About what?””
“About who you trust.””
Andrew lowered his voice.
“You gave me access to information that could affect your entire family.””
My eyes widened.
Ethan went still.
“What did you say?””
Andrew smiled.
“There it is.””
A chill ran through me.
“What is he talking about?”” I whispered.
Ethan ignored my question.
His eyes stayed on Andrew.
“The medical file.””
Andrew shrugged.
“Years ago, you asked me to help you with a private matter.””
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“That has nothing to do with this.””
“Maybe.””
Andrew glanced at me.
“Maybe not.””
I felt the room spin.
Ethan had secrets.
Everyone did.
But something about the way Andrew mentioned that file made it feel different.
Dangerous.
“What file?”” I asked.
Neither man answered.
That scared me more than anything.
The door behind us opened.
A staff member appeared, nervous.
“Mr. Carter, the reporters are asking where Dr. Vaughn is. The ceremony begins in three minutes.””
Ethan looked at Andrew.
Then at me.
The choice was hanging in the air.
Andrew expected him to protect the foundation.
To protect the company.
To protect the image.
But Ethan did something I never expected.
He reached for his phone.
And called someone.
Andrew’s confidence disappeared.
“Who are you calling?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
The phone rang once.
Twice.
Then someone picked up.
“Security,” Ethan said.
Andrew’s face changed.
“Ethan.””
“Remove Dr. Vaughn from the building.””
The hallway went silent.
Even I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
Andrew stared at him.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Ethan’s voice remained steady.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I’m correcting one.””
Security footsteps approached from the ballroom.
Andrew’s expression turned dark.
But instead of looking at Ethan, he looked at me.
And somehow that was worse.
Because I knew that look.
He wasn’t angry because he was losing control.
He was angry because he was already planning what came next.
As security reached the doorway, Andrew leaned closer and whispered something only I could hear.
“You think he saved you?””
My blood turned cold.
Andrew smiled.
“He just opened the door to the truth about Ethan Carter.””
Then he walked away.
May you like
And for the first time that night, I wasn’t afraid of Andrew.
I was afraid of what he knew.
