Chapter 14: The Last Lie of the Carter Family

For a moment, the only sound was the wind moving through the courtyard.

Daniel stood beneath the estate lights with the black folder tucked under his arm. His face was older than I remembered, the skin around his eyes loose and tired, but his expression carried the same certainty that had controlled my childhood.

He still believed he could decide what happened next.

"You expect us to believe you?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

"I expect you to read the documents.""

Alexander bent to retrieve the pages.

Ethan caught his arm.

"Don't let him control the conversation.""

Alexander's eyes flashed.

"He has controlled every conversation in this family for fifteen years.""

"No," Ethan said.

"Our father did. Daniel merely helped him.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"That's convenient, coming from a man who disappeared and left everyone else to clean up the consequences.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"You helped sabotage my boat.""

"I did what I was paid to do.""

"You knew I could have died.""

"I knew you were going to destroy the company.""

"You mean expose your crimes.""

Daniel's face tightened.

"Do you think the distinction mattered to Richard?""

The words hung in the air.

Alexander looked down at the document.

It was a memorandum dated February 2011, signed by Richard Whitmore and witnessed by Victor Vale.

The final paragraph authorized Daniel to "contain the matter involving Ethan Whitmore and prevent the release of confidential financial records by any means necessary.""

My stomach twisted.

"By any means necessary," I repeated.

Daniel nodded.

"Your grandfather was very clear.""

"Did he order you to kill Ethan?""

Daniel looked at Ethan.

"No. He ordered me to stop him. Vale was the one who made sure the boat would fail.""

"That's a distinction without a difference," Alexander said.

"I didn't know how badly the boat had been damaged.""

"But you knew it had been sabotaged.""

Daniel said nothing.

Ethan stepped closer.

"When you found out I survived, why didn't you tell the police?""

Daniel's eyes flickered.

"Because Vale threatened to expose my involvement in the financial scheme. He had records of every transfer I had authorized. He said if I cooperated with the authorities, he would make sure I went to prison.""

"So you helped him conceal the fraud.""

"I had a family to protect.""

I felt something inside me break.

"You keep using that word.""

Daniel turned toward me.

"Claire—"

"No. Don't say my name as though you have the right to make this about me.""

He flinched.

"You raised me," I continued.

"You taught me to tie my shoes. You came to my school performances. You told me my mother was dead, and when I asked questions, you made me feel guilty for asking.

You let me believe Ethan had abandoned us. You let Brielle believe she had to earn your love.""

My voice shook, but I refused to stop.

"And you stole money from a trust meant for us. You forged evidence. You tried to destroy my inheritance. How many more lies are you going to call protection?""

Daniel's face crumpled for a moment.

Then he looked away.

"I never wanted you to get hurt.""

"You wanted me to remain obedient.""

He didn't answer.

Brielle appeared at the top of the steps with Margaret and Detective Harris behind her.

"That's what he always wanted," Brielle said.

She descended slowly, holding a thick stack of papers.

"He wanted us dependent on him. He wanted us to believe that without him, we were nothing.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Where did you get those?""

"Your office.""

"You had no right—"

"Neither did you.""

Brielle placed the papers on the stone railing.

"These are the original trust transfers. Two million dollars moved into companies you controlled. Another three million was redirected from Richard's private estate through accounts managed by Victor Vale.""

Margaret stepped forward.

"And these are the authorization records. I preserved them before Daniel could destroy the originals.""

Daniel looked at her in disbelief.

"You said you would keep this quiet.""

"I kept your secrets for years," Margaret replied.

"I told myself I was protecting Brielle. But every time I signed a document, I made it easier for you to control her.""

Brielle looked at her biological mother.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was ashamed. Because I thought I could repair the damage without admitting what I'd done. Because I was afraid you would hate me.""

Brielle swallowed.

"I might.""

"I know.""

"But I don't want to spend the rest of my life pretending you aren't my mother.""

Margaret covered her mouth.

Brielle reached for her hand.

It wasn't forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.

Detective Harris stepped between Daniel and the documents.

"Mr. Carter, we need you to come with us.""

Daniel looked toward the open gates.

Then he looked at me.

"Claire, please. You don't understand what Vale will do if the evidence becomes public.""

"Then tell us everything.""

He shook his head.

"He's not the kind of man you can fight with a courtroom.""

"Maybe not," I said.

"But we're going to try.""

Daniel stared at me for a long time.

Then he lowered his head.

"Richard arranged the original transfers. Vale created the shell companies. I handled the paperwork. When Ethan discovered the scheme, Richard ordered me to keep him quiet.""

"And my mother?""

"Charlotte found the records after Ethan disappeared. She confronted Richard, and he threatened to have her declared unstable and take custody of you. She asked me to help her escape.""

I stared at him.

"You helped her?""

"I arranged the fake funeral. I paid for the unidentified victim's burial and made sure the paperwork would pass inspection.""

"Why?""

"Because I didn't want Richard to hurt her.""

"Then why did you lie to us for fifteen years?""

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"Because after Richard died, Vale told me that if I admitted what we'd done, he would release the records. I thought I could keep you safe by keeping you ignorant.""

"You kept yourself safe," I said.

He looked down.

"Yes.""

The admission was so small, so late, that it barely felt like truth.

Detective Harris placed him under arrest for suspected financial fraud, evidence tampering, and conspiracy. She explained that additional charges would depend on the investigation.

As the officers led him toward the gates, Daniel stopped beside me.

"I loved you, Claire.""

I looked at the man who had raised me.

"I believe you loved me in the only way you knew how.""

Hope flickered across his face.

"But love isn't a defense for what you did.""

Then he was gone.

For several minutes, nobody moved.

Ethan stood beside Alexander, staring at the empty driveway.

"I should have come back," he whispered.

Alexander shook his head.

"We both should have done a lot of things.""

I looked at Detective Harris.

"What about Victor Vale?""

"We have enough evidence to request a warrant. But we need the original Northstar file to connect him directly to the sabotage.""

Brielle held up a small flash drive.

"Then I think you'll want this.""

She had found it hidden inside the lining of Daniel's office safe.

Margaret had helped identify the encryption key, and the drive contained the missing third part of Northstar.

Detective Harris connected it to a secured laptop.

A series of files appeared.

Bank records.

Internal messages.

Photographs.

And one audio recording.

Alexander pressed play.

Richard Whitmore's voice filled the room.

"Vale, I don't care how you do it. Ethan must not reach the authorities. The records must disappear, and if he refuses to cooperate, make sure he never has the opportunity to speak again.""

A second voice answered.

Victor Vale.

"Understood. And Charlotte?""

Richard paused.

"She is a liability. Daniel will handle her.""

The recording ended.

Brielle gripped my hand.

We had heard enough.

Detective Harris immediately contacted the state police and requested an arrest warrant for Vale. She also arranged for the original files to be copied and preserved by independent investigators.

For the first time, the truth existed somewhere Daniel and Vale couldn't easily erase.

But as the others began making calls, I noticed a final file on the screen.

It was labeled with a date from three months earlier.

*CHARLOTTE CARTER — CURRENT LOCATION CONFIRMED.*

I opened it.

The file contained a photograph of my mother standing outside a small apartment building in Portland.

Beneath it was a note.

Subject has made contact with Ethan Whitmore. Surveillance to continue until both can be apprehended.

I stared at the date.

Three months earlier.

Someone had known where my mother was living.

Someone had been watching her.

And someone had known Ethan was alive long before he contacted me.

I turned toward Alexander.

"Vale didn't just hide the past. He's still hunting them.""

Ethan's face went pale.

"Where is Charlotte now?""

I looked at the photograph again.

The last entry in the file was dated two days earlier.

Subject has departed residence. Destination unknown.

My mother had disappeared again.

But this time, I wasn't going to accept that she was gone.

I took the flash drive from the table.

"Then we find her.""

Alexander nodded.

Brielle stood beside me.

May you like

And for the first time in our lives, we were no longer two sisters fighting for scraps of a life someone else had designed.

We were a family choosing what happened next.
