Chapter 2 - THE MAID WHO CARRIED HIS DEAD WIFE’S LAST MESSAGEThe room remained silent for almost a full minute.

Nobody dared move.

Nobody dared speak.

Because the paper in Alexander Sterling’s hand was not just a letter.

It was proof that the woman everyone believed was gone had left something behind.

Something she wanted him to find.

Something she had trusted someone else to protect.

Alexander stared at the handwriting.

Five years.

Five years since he last saw those letters.

The way Emily wrote his name.

The small curve at the end of every sentence.

The tiny habit of pressing harder when she was emotional.

He knew this handwriting better than his own.

And now it was telling him that everything he believed about her death might be wrong.

“No.”

The word escaped his mouth.

Quiet.

Almost like a denial to himself.

Richard Sterling immediately stepped forward.

“Alexander, you need to calm down.”

Alexander slowly looked at him.

That sentence was enough.

Because Richard had always been the calm one.

The reasonable one.

The man who always appeared when Alexander needed advice.

The uncle who helped him rebuild Sterling Holdings after his father died.

The family member everyone trusted.

But now Richard looked afraid.

Not concerned.

Afraid.

Alexander noticed.

“What do you know?”

Richard’s expression tightened.

“I know nothing.”

“Then why did you tell me to send her away before I even knew what was inside this?”

Nobody answered.

Clara stood frozen near the wall.

Her hands were shaking.

Noah noticed immediately.

He moved closer to her.

“Are you scared?”

Clara looked down.

“Noah…”

“Everyone is looking at you.”

She forced a small smile.

“I’m used to that.”

That sentence bothered Alexander.

Used to being watched.

Used to being judged.

Used to standing invisible in rooms full of powerful people.

He looked back at the letter.

Then opened it.

The paper was old.

The ink slightly faded.

But the words were clear.

Alexander,

If you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid.

Alexander stopped.

His breathing changed.

I wanted to tell you everything myself. I wanted to sit beside you, hold your hand, and explain why I had been investigating the Sterling family trust.

Alexander frowned.

The Sterling family trust.

That was impossible.

Emily had never been involved in company matters.

At least that was what he thought.

He continued reading.

But someone inside our family has been moving money away from Noah’s inheritance.

The room changed.

Several executives exchanged looks.

Alexander’s fingers tightened around the paper.

Noah’s inheritance.

His son’s future.

I discovered accounts hidden under different names. I discovered transfers approved by someone who had authority over Sterling Holdings.

Alexander looked up.

Straight at Richard.

Richard immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Alexander ignored him.

He kept reading.

The person responsible knows how to manipulate records. They know how to make theft look like investment.

His heart began beating faster.

Because this sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

A year before Emily’s accident, Alexander had noticed strange financial patterns.

Small.

Almost invisible.

Millions moved through different subsidiaries.

His finance team told him everything was normal.

He believed them.

Because he trusted the people around him.

If something happens to me, do not trust anyone who tells you I was careless.

Alexander froze.

That line felt personal.

Because after the accident, Richard had told him:

“Emily was distracted.”

“She was overwhelmed.”

“She wasn’t herself.”

“She made mistakes.”

Alexander remembered.

Everyone had blamed Emily.

Everyone except him.

But even he had eventually accepted the explanation.

Clara Bennett knows the truth.

Alexander stopped reading.

His eyes moved toward the woman standing beside his son.

Clara.

The maid.

The woman who had been invisible minutes ago.

She has the evidence.

The entire room went silent again.

Clara lowered her eyes.

Alexander looked at her.

“What evidence?”

She didn’t answer.

“Clara.”

Her lips trembled.

“I promised your wife.”

“Promised her what?”

“To protect Noah.”

Noah looked confused.

“Protect me from what?”

Clara immediately knelt beside him.

“From people who wanted to use you.”

Alexander felt something inside him break.

Because that was the exact fear he had carried since Noah was born.

The Sterling name attracted people.

Money attracted people.

Power attracted people.

He had always worried someone would love Noah because of what he would inherit.

But he never imagined the danger could come from inside the family.

Alexander turned toward Richard.

“Leave.”

Richard stared.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

“This is my family too.”

“No.”

Alexander’s voice became colder.

“This is my son.”

The room went quiet.

“And if you knew anything about this letter, you are no longer welcome to stand near him.”

Richard’s face darkened.

“You are making a mistake.”

“Maybe.”

Alexander folded the letter.

“But for the first time in years, I’m making my own.”

Richard left.

But before he walked through the doors, he looked at Clara.

Not with anger.

With fear.

And Alexander saw it.

That look told him more than words.

Richard knew her.

That night, Noah refused to sleep alone.

Alexander found him sitting on the floor of his bedroom.

A blanket wrapped around him.

The same place he used to sit after Emily died.

Alexander sat beside him.

“Are you angry with me?”

Noah looked up.

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t know Clara helped you.”

Noah shook his head.

“You don’t see everything, Daddy.”

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

“What do you mean?”

Noah looked toward the window.

“Before Mommy died, you were always busy.”

Alexander swallowed.

“I was working.”

“I know.”

Noah looked at him.

“You were trying to make everything better.”

Alexander stayed quiet.

“But nobody made things better for Mommy.”

That sentence destroyed him.

Children should not understand adult failures.

They should not carry memories adults refused to face.

Alexander hugged his son.

“I’m sorry.”

Noah did not answer.

After a moment, he whispered:

“Is Mommy really gone?”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.”

That was the first honest answer he had given his son in years.

At midnight, Clara entered Alexander’s office.

She carried a small wooden box.

“You knew this day would come?”

Alexander asked.

She nodded.

“Your wife prepared everything.”

“Why you?”

Clara looked down.

“Because she trusted me.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

Clara hesitated.

Then said:

“Because I was there the night she discovered the truth.”

Alexander stood.

“What truth?”

Clara placed the box on the desk.

“Your father didn’t leave Sterling Holdings the way everyone thinks.”

Alexander froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“What are you saying?”

Clara opened the box.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Property records.

Bank statements.

And one photograph.

Alexander picked it up.

His face changed instantly.

Because the photograph showed his father.

But he was not alone.

Standing beside him was a young woman.

A woman Alexander recognized.

His mother’s former personal assistant.

A woman who disappeared thirty years earlier.

“What does she have to do with my family?”

Clara whispered:

“Everything.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Who was she?”

Clara took a deep breath.

Then said:

“She was my mother.”

The room went completely silent.

Alexander stared.

“No.”

Clara’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“And why would your mother matter?”

Clara looked directly at him.

“Because before your father married your mother…”

She paused.

“He had another child.”

Alexander felt the world stop.

“What?”

Clara looked at the documents.

“The Sterling family has spent thirty years hiding one truth.”

She pushed one paper toward him.

Alexander read the name.

And his hands began shaking.

Because the document contained a birth record.

A secret child.

A child born before Alexander.

A child who had a legal claim to Sterling fortune.

Then Clara whispered:

“And that child is the reason your wife was afraid.”

Alexander looked up.

“Who is it?”

May you like

Clara’s voice broke.

“Me.”
