Chapter 4: The Man Who Came to Claim the Heir
Richard Vaughn entered the private salon without knocking.
He was fifty-two, impeccably dressed, and carried himself with the confidence of a man who had spent decades making other people believe that his decisions were inevitable. His navy suit fit perfectly, his silver cuff links caught the chandelier light, and his black leather folder rested beneath one arm.
Behind him stood two attorneys and a security supervisor from the Sterling estate.
Richard's smile widened when he saw Alexander.
"There you are. I've been looking everywhere for you.""
Alexander stepped away from the sofa, positioning himself between Richard and Noah.
"You have thirty seconds to explain why you're carrying a guardianship order to my son's birthday gala.""
"It's a family selection gala," Richard replied smoothly.
"And the timing is unfortunate, I agree. But circumstances don't always respect social calendars.""
Elena immediately pulled Noah closer.
Richard noticed.
His gaze settled on the gold necklace beneath her collar, and for the briefest instant, his expression cracked.
Then he smiled again.
"Miss Carter. I didn't expect to see you here.""
Elena's fingers tightened around Noah's hand.
"I didn't expect to see you either.""
Richard placed his folder on the table.
"Alexander, we should discuss this privately. The boy doesn't need to hear complicated legal matters.""
"My son stays with me.""
"Of course."" Richard glanced at Noah.
"For the moment.""
Alexander's jaw tightened.
"Explain the order.""
Richard opened the folder and removed several documents. He arranged them neatly across the polished table, turning the first page toward Alexander.
"Two years ago, you signed an emergency family trust authorization. Under its provisions, if your capacity to manage the Sterling estate became impaired, temporary guardianship arrangements could be activated to protect the principal beneficiary.""
"My capacity is not impaired.""
"Your behavior tonight suggests otherwise.""
Alexander stared at him.
Richard continued in the same pleasant tone.
"You have publicly disrupted an event attended by half the country's financial elite. You've dismissed your mother's concerns, accused members of your own family of misconduct, and allowed an employee to influence your son in a deeply inappropriate way.""
Elena rose.
"I have never tried to influence Noah against his family.""
Richard barely acknowledged her.
"Yet the child calls you Mommy.""
"Because I cared for his mother when nobody else would listen to her," Elena answered.
Richard's smile vanished.
"Be careful, Miss Carter.""
Alexander moved closer to him.
"Don't speak to her like that.""
Richard lifted both hands.
"Fine. Let's discuss the actual issue. The emergency authorization grants the family trustee the right to seek temporary guardianship if the child's welfare is threatened by instability within the household.""
"Who is the family trustee?"" Alexander asked.
Richard paused.
Then he pointed toward the document.
"Your mother.""
Alexander looked at the signature page.
His signature was there.
So was Margaret's.
But something about the wording troubled him. He remembered signing an emergency authorization during his wife's final days, yet he didn't remember agreeing to transfer any authority over Noah.
"Who drafted this?"" he asked.
"Our legal department.""
"Which attorney?""
Richard adjusted one cuff.
"That information is available in the supporting records.""
"Then produce them.""
"Alexander, this isn't the time to play detective.""
Alexander leaned forward.
"You brought a legal order to remove my son from my custody. You don't get to decide what questions I'm allowed to ask.""
For the first time, Richard's smile looked forced.
"Very well. The petition alleges that Noah has been subjected to emotional manipulation by an unauthorized caregiver. It also cites concerns about your judgment following your wife's death.""
Elena went still.
Noah looked up at her.
"What's manipulation?""
"Nothing you need to worry about, sweetheart," Elena whispered.
Richard slid another page across the table.
"Miss Carter's employment records indicate that she left nursing under circumstances that require further investigation. Her presence in this household is therefore a legitimate concern.""
Alexander picked up the page.
"You investigated her?""
"I investigated everyone connected to this matter.""
"Then investigate this."" Alexander held up his wife's letter.
"Why did your name appear on a document transferring control of Noah's inheritance three days before she died?""
Richard's face lost its color.
Only for a second.
But Alexander saw it.
"What document?"" Richard asked.
"The one my wife warned me about.""
Richard reached for the letter.
Alexander pulled it away.
"Don't.""
The word landed like a slap.
Richard straightened.
"Alexander, grief can make people susceptible to elaborate fabrications. You should consider that before trusting a letter delivered by a woman who has already demonstrated an unhealthy attachment to your child.""
Elena stood abruptly.
"She wrote that letter before she died.""
"Can you prove that?""
"Yes.""
The room fell silent.
Alexander turned toward her.
Elena reached into her pocket and produced a small photograph. Its edges were worn, and the image showed a hospital bed beside a window.
His wife lay against white pillows, her face thin but unmistakable.
Elena sat beside her, holding her hand.
On the back, in handwriting Alexander recognized, were five words.
For Elena, who kept her promise.
Richard stared at the photograph.
"You stole hospital property.""
"No," Elena replied.
"Your people tried to take it. I kept it because she asked me to.""
Richard closed his folder.
"This conversation is over.""
He turned toward the security supervisor.
"Please escort Miss Carter from the premises while we resolve the guardianship matter.""
The supervisor hesitated.
Alexander stepped in front of him.
"Nobody is escorting anyone anywhere.""
"Alexander," Richard said, lowering his voice, "I strongly advise you to cooperate. The petition has already been filed. If you obstruct the process, you could jeopardize your own position as Noah's father.""
Alexander's phone vibrated again.
This time, the message came from his private attorney.
*Do not sign anything. I'm reviewing the trust authorization now. There may be a serious discrepancy in the filing date.*
Alexander looked at Richard.
"What date was this petition filed?""
"Yesterday.""
"At what time?""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Why does that matter?""
"Because I want to know.""
Richard named a time.
Alexander immediately checked his phone.
His attorney had sent a second message.
*The court's electronic receipt shows a filing timestamp from three weeks ago. The copy Richard brought tonight appears to have been modified.*
Alexander raised his eyes.
"You lied.""
Richard's mouth tightened.
"I beg your pardon?""
"You told me this petition was filed yesterday. The court receipt says three weeks ago.""
Richard's eyes flicked toward the doors.
Elena saw it too.
He wasn't merely worried about the discrepancy.
He was calculating an escape.
Alexander moved toward the salon entrance.
"Security, close the doors. Nobody leaves until my attorney arrives.""
The supervisor looked uncertainly at Richard.
That hesitation told Alexander everything he needed to know about who had been giving the estate's security team its orders.
"Now," Alexander commanded.
The doors closed.
Richard forced a laugh.
"This is absurd. You're holding a senior executive against his will because of a clerical error.""
"Then you'll have no problem explaining the error to my attorney.""
Richard looked toward Noah.
For the first time, his expression became cold.
"Young man, you should understand that adults sometimes make difficult decisions for your own good.""
Noah pressed his face against Elena's side.
"I don't want to go with you.""
Richard crouched slightly.
"You don't know what you want.""
Alexander stepped between them so quickly that Richard straightened.
"My son told you his answer.""
A heavy silence followed.
Then Richard's phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and answered without moving away.
"Yes?""
A woman's voice came through the speaker, too faint for Alexander to understand.
Richard's expression changed.
He turned away, but not before Alexander heard him whisper three words.
"The ring is here.""
Elena froze.
Richard ended the call.
Alexander stared at him.
"Who were you speaking to?""
Richard slid the phone into his pocket.
"Someone who understands the seriousness of this situation.""
"Who?""
Richard said nothing.
Then a sharp knock sounded against the salon doors.
The security supervisor opened them slightly.
Margaret Sterling stood outside, her gold gown gleaming beneath the ballroom lights. Her composure had returned, but her eyes were fixed on the necklace at Elena's throat.
"Alexander," she said, "you need to hear what Richard has discovered about that ring.""
May you like
She stepped inside and looked directly at Elena.
"Because your wife wasn't the only person who entrusted you with a secret.""
